Baghdad denounces Israeli strikes on Damascus: Blatant violation
Iraq's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria, calling it a 'blatant and repeated violation' of international law.
In a statement, the ministry denounced what it described as 'the Israeli entity's' attack on Damascus, labeling it a flagrant breach of international legal norms and United Nations resolutions.
The ministry emphasized its complete rejection of actions that put Syrian civilians at risk and worsen the country's ongoing humanitarian crisis. It also called for an immediate halt to the escalation, warning that continued strikes pose a direct threat to regional security and stability.
Reaffirming Iraq's position against violations of state sovereignty, the statement cautioned against what it described as Israel's use of 'pretexts or justifications as a cover to pursue expansionist goals that undermine stability in the region.'
The Foreign Ministry urged the international community to assume its legal and humanitarian responsibilities to end such violations and prevent their recurrence, noting that doing so would contribute to greater regional and global peace and security.
The statement also stressed the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of all components of the Syrian population amid the country's difficult humanitarian circumstances, calling for a genuine national dialogue between the Syrian government and representatives of the country's diverse communities 'as a means to advance human rights and strengthen social cohesion.'

The southern province has seen days of deadly clashes between the religious minority and forces affiliated with Damascus. 'The Syrian Arab Army has begun withdrawing from Suwayda, in accordance with an agreement between the Syrian state and the city's religious sheikhs. This follows the completion of the army's pursuit of outlaw groups,' the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), over 300 people have been killed since fighting erupted between the Druze community and the Bedouin tribes on Sunday. Among the dead are 69 Druze fighters and 40 civilians, including 27 reportedly killed in 'summary executions... by members of the defense and interior ministries.' The monitor also reported the deaths of 165 pro-government fighters, 18 Bedouins, and ten regime security personnel killed in Israeli strikes. The Israeli army hit several government-affiliated sites in Damascus on Wednesday, including an army headquarters. US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the tensions, stating that there were ongoing efforts to de-escalate the tensions. US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce told Rudaw's Diyar Kurda during a press briefing on Wednesday that there has been a misunderstanding and that the US is involved in the efforts to end the tensions. 'We've understood that the results have to be… described [and] people there in Syria have to see results, especially regarding the infrastructure. At the same time this is a new, fluid dynamic,' she said. A resident of Suwayda sent a video of her house, describing their fear and violations committed by Damascus-affiliated security forces. 'We have been besieged in Suwayda. We cannot leave Suwayda at all. Suwayda has been completely besieged. We have also been besieged in the house and we have been under mortar attacks in a frightening way for three days, meaning the mortar attacks do not cease and there is gunfire and street fighting. Snippers have been placed in all parts of Suwayda,' she noted. Videos showing security forces disrespecting the Druze community, including shaving their moustaches, went viral in recent days. The Syrian government acknowledged the violations and pledged to hold the perpetrators accountable. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General, told Rudaw's Sinan Tuncdemir during a press briefing that these videos were 'extremely concerning,' adding that 'we are very much eager to follow up with the government on their call for an investigation and also on their commitment to hold people to account. The videos are shocking and highly, highly disturbing.'

The Spiritual Leader Of The Syrian Druze, Hikmat Al-Hijri, Calls On Trump, Netanyahu, Bin Salman And Abdullah II To Save The Druze Of The Al-Suwayda Governorate From The Syrian Government
On July 13, 2025, clashes broke out in Al-Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes following several mutual kidnapping incidents. The new Syrian government headed by Ahmed Al-Sharaa (aka Abu Mohammad Al-Joulani) quickly seized this escalation as an opportunity to intervene militarily in the governorate, which is not under its full security control, and sent troops to "enforce security" there. In light of damage caused to its image by the massacres perpetrated against Alawite civilians on the Syrian coast in March 2025, with the participation of government forces,[1] the government stressed that the Syrian soldiers and security officers had been instructed to protect civilians and avoid harming them in any way.[2] But in practice, there were many documented incidents of Syrian forces firing indiscriminately at civilians, looting their property, torching their homes and humiliating them.[3] Dozens of Druze have been killed so far, including women and children.[4] These developments prompted Hikmat Al-Hijri, the prominent spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, who is based in Al-Suwayda and is a known opponent of the Al-Sharaa government, to issue a statement on June 16 calling on world leaders – including U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu[5] – to "save Al-Suwayda." It should be noted that, in a statement he issued one day earlier, Al-Hijri actually called on the Syrian government to extend its control over the Al-Suwayda Governorate, welcomed the arrival of its forces there, and exhorted all the local armed factions to cooperate with these forces.[6] However, a short time later, when the government forces' violence against the Druze civilians continued, he released a statement claiming that his previous "humiliating" statement had been issued "under coercion from Damascus and pressure from foreign countries." He added that Al-Suwayda was facing a war and called to confront it.[7] It should also be noted that this is not the first time the Syrian Druze have been attacked by the forces of the new government. "Our people are being exterminated and murdered in cold blood. The murderers do not distinguish between young and old, woman and child, doctor and sheikh. They destroy churches and houses of worship. These massacres are being perpetrated in front of the entire world, and silence continues to kill. We hold the international community fully responsible for fulfilling its humanitarian and moral duty of stopping this systematic [killing]. "The mask has fallen from the face of the oppressive and tyrannical gang that rules [Syria]. We call upon our Sunni brethren to take a clear stand on what is happening to their fellow Syrians, for we have never been enemies or rivals and we can no longer coexist with a regime that can only rule with iron and fire and [wield] power through violence and abuse. "Our call to you is not political, but humanitarian and moral. [Act] before it is too late. Save a people that is being murdered simply for asking to live in dignity."[10]

Syrian Jihadi Group 'Ansar Al-Sunnah Battalions' Threatens To Target Druze, As Other Syrian Jihadis Call To 'Close Druze File,' Reject Coexistence

On July 13, 2025, clashes broke out between Druze militias and Bedouin tribesmen in the predominantly Druze city of Al-Suwayda', in southern Syria. The fighting, which escalated over subsequent days and expanded across Al-Suwayda' governorate, has so far killed dozens of people and injured hundreds more, prompting the Syrian Defense Ministry and Interior Ministry's Public Security Administration (PSA) to deploy forces to the city, which military forces of the new government had refrained from entering following the December 2024 collapse of the Assad regime. A July 15 ceasefire agreement between the government and local Druze notables quickly collapsed, and fighting remains ongoing. As the fighting rages, Syrian jihadis, including both supporters and opponents of the new government – linked to disbanded jihadi group Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) – have incited against Druze, portraying them as non-Muslims, treacherous enemies of Sunnis, and collaborators with Assad regime supporters.[1] Ansar Al-Sunnah Battalions Threatens To Target Druze On July 15, the Syrian jihadi "Ansar Al-Sunnah [Supporters of Sunnis] Battalions" issued a brief statement by its leader, Abu 'A'ishah Al-Shami, threatening the Druze. The statement declares: "What our mujahideen did a few months ago – killing, punishment, and displacement in the ranks of the Nusayri [a pejorative term for Alawite] sect – we will repeat – Allah willing – in the coming days in the lands of the infidels belonging to the Druze religion in the land of Al-Suwayda'. They should know that our hand will reach them, when they thought they were safe. And Allah is the ruler, and He is the best helper."[2] The reference to attacks on Alawites apparently refers to the involvement of the group's fighters in acts of violence against Alawites during a wave of unrest that swept the Syrian coastal areas on March 6.[3] Syrian Jihadis Reject Coexistence With Druze "Sectarians," Urge "Retaliation" At the same time, other Syrian jihadis incited against the Druze, declaring them enemies of Islam and calling on the government to forcefully subdue them. On July 14-15, Syrian jihadi Abu Muhammad Nasr published Telegram posts asserting that "false coexistence" with "esotericist sects" such as the Druze brings calamity. He warned that "if the Druze file is not completely closed, we will never be able to close any file afterward," claiming that Israel will support "any [future] project of secession and rebellion" in Syria. Asserting that "the Druze are no less criminal than the Nusayris [a pejorative term for Alawites]," he claimed that they will side with any "enemy of Islam" if given the chance, and that history testifies to their "constant treachery."[4] In July 15 Telegram posts, Syrian jihadi cleric Abu Yahya Al-Shami called for "inghimas" [commando-style raids] "in every village, in every neighborhood" to "close the Al-Suwayda' file." Declaring that it is forbidden to withdraw from Al-Suwayda' and that it must be "purified from the criminals," he asserted that the battle is not between the government and the Druze but between a "revolutionary nation and criminal sectarians."[5] The pro-HTS "Murasil Maydani" Telegram channel shared a video of fighters attacking Druze "to defend our noble Prophet [Muhammad]," whom it alleged was insulted by "[Assad regime] remnants and mercenaries of [Druze religious leader Hikmat] Al-Hijri." A second video was shared of a march, where men waved white jihadi flags and those of the new Syrian government, while shouting "The Druze is an enemy of Allah." The channel commented with the Quranic verse "Kill them wherever you come upon them and drive them out of the places from which they have driven you out" (2:191), and declared that "the time has come for retaliation" against Druze militias which fought alongside the Assad regime.[6] The Ansar Al-Sunnah Battalions is an obscure Syrian Salafi-jihadi group which in February began claiming attacks on religious minorities, including Alawites, Druze, and Christians. The group uses Islamic State (ISIS) shari'a courses to train its members, quotes official ISIS productions, and praises the organization, but has not become an official ISIS affiliate by swearing allegiance to its caliph. The group is headed by Abu 'A'ishah Al-Shami, who reportedly defected from HTS and formed the group in Idlib prior to the December 2024 fall of the Assad regime. Although it views forces of the new government as apostates from Islam who may be killed, it currently prioritizes targeting minorities.[7]
