Indian-origin woman fined for feeding pigeons in Singapore
A 70-year-old woman of Indian origin was fined SGD 1,200 (approximately USD 930) in Singapore on Wednesday for illegally feeding pigeons near her apartment.The woman, identified as Sanmugamnathan Shamla, was also accused by an NPARKs prosecutor of disrupting a pigeon trapping exercise by chasing the birds away near her home. She pleaded guilty to two counts of feeding wild birds under the Wildlife Act, reported Channel News Asia (CNA).advertisementDespite a court warning in 2020 after being charged with eight accounts, she kept feeding the birds till November 2024. She was let off with a stern warning after she agreed to stop.

Tao Payoh is a town located in the northern part of the central region of Singapore.At about 4 PM on April 11, 2023, NParks officers saw her feeding grain to wild birds and asked her to stop as this was illegal in Singapore.advertisementFeeding wildlife without written approval from NParks' Director-General of Wildlife Management is prohibited under the Wildlife Act in the country.On February 19 this year, Shamla also hindered NParks officers carrying out a pigeon-trapping exercise near her home, according to the report. She used a metal pole to scare the pigeons off before they could be captured.She continued to disrupt the trapping exercise and also raised her voice when officers asked her to stop, forcing the officers to abandon the exercise, NParks prosecutor Lim Chong Hui reportedly said.'RECALCITRANT OFFENDER'Calling her a "recalcitrant offender", the judge also said that the prosecution had sought a lower fine than usual, taking into account her personal circumstances and age.When the judge told her she would have to serve two days in prison if she did not pay the fine, Shamla reportedly said, "I don't think my health can handle prison."She paid the fine in full on Wednesday, according to the report.

Mumbai: Banned wildlife animals were seized from an international flyer at the city airport on Sunday, and the passenger who had arrived from Bangkok was arrested. Animals of rare species — the Spider Tailed Horned Viper, Asian Leaf Turtle, and Indonesian Pit Viper — have been found, said Customs officials at the international terminal of the airport. Sources in the Customs department said that, based on specific information, an Indian travelling from Bangkok to Mumbai was intercepted. Illegal gambling platforms pose grave threat to Indian youth: Report
A report by CUTS (Consumer Unity & Trust Society) International has raised alarm over the explosive growth of illegal online gambling platforms in India, warning of serious threats to minors, young adults, and national financial integrity. With estimated annual deposits nearing $100 billion, the report urges immediate regulatory intervention to combat this growing menace. It reveals that from April 2024 to March 2025, the top 15 illegal gambling platforms garnered over 5.4 billion visits through 40 mirror sites. 'These operators are exploiting India's advertisement and payment systems, siphoning off crores while putting Indian consumers at grave risk. The absence of regulatory safeguards has made India a fertile ground for these platforms,' said Pradeep Mehta, the secretary general of CUTS. The report flags how illegal operators target vulnerable youth through immersive, high-stakes experiences, bypassing age and identity verification protocols. According to the report, few platforms use psychological tactics to lure sensation-seeking users, while some offshore players even accept cash-on-delivery payments allowing minors to gamble without digital access or oversight. The report further states that a large chunk of user traffic - over 66% - comes via direct URLs or private channels, suggesting a high degree of brand familiarity and trust. According to the report, illicit payment tactics include misuse of UPI, mule accounts, and sophisticated appsto move funds under the radar. While the Ministry of Finance has initiated investigations into nearly 700 offshore entities and blocked 357 sites, the report says much more needs to be done. CUTS recommends a robust national framework backed by an inter-ministerial task force, collaboration with tech companies, public awareness campaigns, and behavioural research into gambling addiction. It also urges strong measures to monitor and block illegal websites and financial transactions. The report calls India's current approach 'manual and reactive.'

Ankara: An Indian content creator has reportedly been detained in Turkey after massive outrage over his alleged derogatory remarks targeting Turkish women. YouTuber Malik SD Khan, who is known among his followers as 'Malik Swashbuckler', came under fire after a series of videos appeared on his channel, where he was seen making sexually explicit remarks on Turkish women. Though Malik has taken down his YouTube and Instagram accounts amid the row, some of the clippings are still circulating on social media, where the YouTuber can be seen using offensive language in Hindi-believing locals wouldn't be able to understand him- as he made rape threats and sexually explicit comments against women. In one of the clips, he referred to a woman as "maal", while in another, he asked viewers if he should sexually assault his Turkish guide at night. In another video, Malik was seen entering a Turkish store and demanding to know why they don't have an Indian flag on display, as he used foul language against the shopkeeper. Some Turkish social media users, who understood what was being said in the videos, flagged them, leading to public backlash. Turkish cops have nicked an Indian tourist after he posted offensive videos about Turkey on his YouTube channel, Malik Swashbuckler. He was caught slagging off Turkish women in Hindi, thinking they wouldn't understand.
