Iraq signs major deal with US Schlumberger to develop Akkas field

Shafaq News – Baghdad
Iraq signed a new agreement on Tuesday with US energy giant Schlumberger to ramp up production at the Akkas gas field in al-Anbar—the Middle East's second-largest—aiming to boost domestic supply and relieve the country's worsening energy crisis.
According to the Oil Ministry, Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, who is also Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, described the deal as central to Iraq's gas strategy, with Schlumberger set to drill new wells alongside the Midland Oil Company to initially produce 100 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd), targeting 400 mmscfd long-term.
The contract, which replaces a previous deal with a Ukrainian firm, also covers surface infrastructure and pipeline construction to connect Akkas to central processing units and power the al-Anbar Power Station now under development.
Abdul Ghani urged Schlumberger to meet all deadlines, underscoring Iraq's urgent need to expand gas production.
Schlumberger's Integrated Projects President, Gokhan Yarim, welcomed the partnership and pledged full compliance with the schedule while reaffirming the company's long-term commitment to Iraq.
Deputy Oil Minister for Extraction Affairs Bassem Mohammed Khudair praised the deal as a strategic leap that combines domestic capabilities with global expertise, citing Akkas and Mansuriya as top priorities for cutting gas flaring and raising output.
Midland Oil Director General Mohammed Yassin endorsed the initiative, highlighting its technical impact and its role in enabling direct cooperation between Iraqi firms and major international service providers.

Pregnant journalist killed in Gaza as media cries foul against Israel

Shafaq News – Gaza Palestinian journalist Walaa al-Jaabari was killed alongside her husband, five of their children, and her unborn child, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their home on Wednesday in Gaza City's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, according to Palestinian media reports. Her death brought the number of journalists killed since October 7 to 231, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza, which described the toll as the result of 'premeditated assassinations' to silence Palestinian voices. — Khaled Safi 🇵🇸 خالد صافي (@KhaledSafi) July 23, 2025 Just days earlier, photojournalist Tamer al-Zaanin was shot and killed by Israeli forces during a raid that reportedly involved the abduction of Dr. Marwan al-Homs, director of Gaza's field hospitals. The Office called on international journalist unions—including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Federation of Arab Journalists—to break their silence. It also held the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France responsible for enabling what it called 'genocidal crimes,' urging international courts to pursue accountability for Israeli officials. The international media community has sounded its own alarms. On Tuesday, Agence France-Presse (AFP) urged Israel to facilitate the immediate evacuation of its freelancers trapped in Gaza, warning they are facing not only the threat of bombing but also starvation and physical collapse. 'Their situation is now untenable,' AFP declared, describing conditions for its team on the ground as 'appalling.' Ten freelancers—one writer, three photographers, and six videographers—remain inside Gaza, among the last international reporters documenting the war firsthand. — La SDJ de l'AFP (@SDJ_AFP) July 21, 2025 One of them, photographer Bashar Taleb, wrote in a Facebook post: 'My body is thin, and I can no longer work,' revealing that his brother had recently collapsed from hunger. While the journalists still receive their salaries, food is either unavailable or priced beyond reach. AFP's journalists' union, the SDJ, warned: 'Without intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die.' AFP management confirmed it is working to evacuate its staff and their families, despite the near-total closure of Gaza's borders. 'We share the anguish expressed by the SDJ union,' the agency stated, adding that it has been 'helplessly witnessing the dramatic deterioration of their living conditions.' Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die -Sin una intervención inmediata, los últimos reporteros de Gaza morirán-بلا تدخل فوري، آخر مراسلي وكالة فرانس برس في قطاع غزة مهددون بالموت جوعاً — La SDJ de l'AFP (@SDJ_AFP) July 23, 2025 Meanwhile, Israel's assault on press freedom has extended to arrests. The Palestinian Prisoners' Club reported that Israeli forces have detained 55 journalists since the war began, with 49 still held in detention. Human rights groups accuse Israeli authorities of torture, starvation, and medical neglect inside prisons. More than 10,400 Palestinians are currently imprisoned, including 47 women, over 440 children, and 2,214 detainees from Gaza labeled as 'unlawful combatants.' Rights monitors warn that these conditions have already led to multiple deaths behind bars.

PM Al-Sudani, Secretary Rubio discuss PMF regulation

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks covering several key security and economic issues. At the center of the discussion was the draft law regulating the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a crucial element of Iraq's ongoing security reforms. According to the Prime Minister's media office, the legislation, approved by parliament, aligns with existing frameworks for the National Intelligence and National Security services, emphasizing that the PMF operates under the authority of the Iraqi army's commander-in-chief. 'The full integration of the PMF into Iraq's formal military structure is essential for maintaining national unity and security,' al-Sudani added. The officials also examined recent attacks on oil facilities across the Kurdistan Region, Saladin, and Kirkuk provinces, characterizing them as 'assaults on Iraq's economy,' further posing threats to vital revenues and Regional stability. In response, al-Sudani reaffirmed Baghdad's support for regional ceasefires and ongoing efforts to ease tensions through de-escalation measures. Turning to internal fiscal matters, the prime minister drew attention to a cabinet decision requiring the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to transfer oil and non-oil revenues to the federal treasury, noting that this follows the 2024 Budget Law and a Federal Supreme Court ruling aimed at resolving longstanding financial disputes with Erbil. The conversation concluded with plans to resume crude exports through the Iraq–Turkiye pipeline, which has been inactive since March 2023, along with renewed measures to prevent smuggling and safeguard Iraq's natural resources.
