2 rescued from sinking boat near Point Lookout, Coast Guard says
The Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received the distress signal via a very high frequency broadcast Saturday morning that a 37-foot boat was taking on water with two people on board, just four nautical miles from Point Lookout.
According to a social media post from the Coast Guard, the owner of the vessel initially reported that the bilge pumps, which are used to remove water that collects in the lowest part of the boat, were keeping up with the flooding.
'The situation quickly deteriorated when one pump failed, and the stern began to submerge,' the post reads.
The Coast Guard launched a response boat from the St. Inigoes station and notified state and local entities of the emergency.
Upon arrival, the Coast Guard rescued both people on board just seconds before the boat capsized and sank, the post says.
Attached were photos and videos of the vessel when the Coast Guard arrived that show the back half of the vessel quickly sinking. In a matter of 15 seconds, an overhang on the back of the vessel went from sitting feet above the water to submerged below the water level.
According to the Coast Guard, both individuals were transported safely to shore with no reported injuries and no emergency medical services required.
'This incident underscores the vital importance of having a functioning VHF radio to call for help, always wearing lifejackets and performing regular equipment checks before heading out on the water,' the post reads. 'Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency.'

Maryland pastor returns home a month after being detained by ICE agents
A Maryland pastor returned home almost a month after he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who said he overstayed his visa by 25 years. Daniel Fuentes Espinal, 54, was granted bond and released from an ICE detention center in Louisiana, according to family friend Len Foxwell. "Pastor Fuentes Espinal and his family are together again for the first time since that terrible morning of July 21, when a pastor and father of three said goodbye to his wife and children, left for work, and never came home," Foxwell said in a social media post on Thursday. The Easton, Maryland, community rallied in support of Fuentes Espinal after he was detained in July while he was on his way to work. Fuentes Espinal is a pastor at Iglesia Del Nazareno Jesus Te Ama and a construction worker. He has lived in the U.S. since 2001 and does not have a criminal record, according to Foxwell. According to ICE, Fuentes Espinal, a Honduran national, "entered the United States on a 6-month visa and never left in 24 years." "It is a federal crime to overstay the authorized period of time granted under a visitor's visa," an ICE spokesperson said. After he was arrested, Fuentes Espinal was taken to a detention center in Salisbury before he was transferred to a facility in Baltimore, then to the Winn Correctional Facility in Louisiana. "He spent three days at a detention center in Baltimore, sleeping on a cold bench with barely enough food to eat," Foxwell said. Foxwell said Fuentes Espinal had little contact with his family while he was detained. "They actually charge $50 for a phone call for a family that's already lost their primary breadwinner. That's a huge financial hit," he said. Shortly after his arrest, activists in Baltimore rallied in support of Fuentes Espinal. "People are leading into that hate, but we can't be doing that anymore. It is too late at this point in the game to hate, and I am imploring everybody to come out here and love instead," said Annalese Estepp, who attended the march that ended near Baltimore ICE's detention center in the George H. Fallon federal building. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen also offered support, saying his team was working with the Fuentes Espinal family.

A woman has been charged with murder after a fatal 'stabbing' in Newton Aycliffe. Patricia Hewitt, 41, of Newton Aycliffe, is due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Monday, August 18. Emergency services were called to a property on Bakewell Place on Wednesday (August 13), after reports that a 56-year-old woman had suffered stab wounds. Despite their efforts, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A 41-year-old woman was arrested at another address in Newton Aycliffe a short time later. She was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. CSI officers in white suits were seen bringing brown evidence bags out of a bungalow. The cordon remained in place on Friday, where a CSI officer could be seen taking photographs in the front garden of the property. A second cordon was also in place throughout Thursday on Fenhall Green and Well House Drive, about a ten-minute walk away, after the alleged murder. CSI officers were seen searching a grassed area, bushes and the yard of a house on Thursday. This cordon had been removed on Friday. Durham Police confirmed the cordons were linked, and it was being treated as an isolated incident. One fast response paramedic car and a critical care car from the Great North Air Ambulance. It happened about 7.30pm. A tow truck took a car away, though I couldn't see what it was. 'The police cordon was up all night, and CSI got here about 9.30am this morning.' His partner Nicola Walton added: 'It's a massive shock, it really scared me.' 18-year-old motorcyclist dies after hitting vehicle in Quebec's Eastern Townships
An 18-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday night after colliding with a vehicle in Roxton Pond, Que., in the Eastern Townships. The incident took place at the intersection of Route 139 and 3e Rang de Roxton, according to provincial police spokesperson Élizabeth Marquis-Guy. The boy was declared dead at the scene after emergency services arrived at around 11 p.m. The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 20s, was sent to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. According to Marquis-Guy, preliminary information indicates that the motorcyclist did not stop as required at the intersection and hit the motorist. Collision experts were at the scene to elucidate the circumstances around the crash.
