On LinkedIn's 15 Workplace Skills List

I look forward to LinkedIn's emails. Well, maybe not all of them, as their numbers are continuously on the rise – with jobs for which I am deemed a good fit, despite the fact that I haven't been a job seeker in 28 years – but there are some real gems in there.
Such was the case last week when a LinkedIn News email landed in my – and surely, many millions of other – inboxes. It carried this headline: '15 skills companies want right now' and then went on to lead with this statement: '70% of the skills you use today will change by 2030. Here are the emerging ones.' A couple of clicks later – my, how our reading habits have changed! – and the list began, including thoughtful commentary on each, It's bulletin board-worthy stuff, for sure. Here's LinkedIn's list, minus their commentary. (My commentary, you can be sure, will follow.)
(1) AI Literacy, (2) Conflict Mitigation, (3) Adaptability, (4) Process Optimization, (5) Innovative Thinking, (6) Public Speaking, (7) Solution-Based Selling, (8) Customer Engagement & Support, (9) Stakeholder Management, (10) Large Language Model (LLM) Development & Application, (11) Budget & Resource Management, (12) Go-To-Market Strategy, (13) Regulatory Compliance, (14) Growth Strategy, (15) Risk Assessment.
(A) It's forward-looking, although some of this is not new and never will be. (B) It's long, wide, and deep, although in need of an addition or two. (C) It's most likely based on good data, given LinkedIn's reach into data from their 1.15 billion worldwide users. Good surveys happen that way. (D) Their comments transcend data analysis and cross over into interpretation. In other words: What does this mean? That's the difference between left-brain logic and right-brain creativity.
Albert Einstein used to say, 'Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.' The above list, as it appears, is oversimplified, in my view. Fourteen of the fifteen 'skills' as listed are actually more complex than that. They are skill sets, experiential career levels, sensibilities, core strengths, or characteristics. They are complex, robust, and interdependent. They develop in tandem, not alone, and they become multi-, not unidimensional.
Public Speaking may seem simple enough, but is really made up of verbal communication, nonverbal communication, effective writing, appropriate use of informative or persuasive or special occasion techniques, and PowerPoint (if you take it that far).
That said, I remind you that I see only one that is, indeed, a stand-alone skill. If you think you know which, I'd be interested in your thoughts.
For decades going back as far as I can research (at least to the 1950s), the two skills executives and recruiters stated they valued more than all others were communication and ability to work well within a team. In other words, they were saying, they could get all the hard-skill people they needed; what kept them up at night was the inability of most people to talk to and work with each other. The graduate-level communication and leadership course I taught for 15 years at Fairleigh Dickinson University was predicated on that reality. That's simple.
Simplify when you can, don't when you shouldn't, and know the difference.

BofA appoints Satish Arcot to lead capital markets business in India

Bank of America (BofA) has appointed Satish Arcot, a banker from JPMorgan Chase, as the managing director based in Mumbai, for its capital markets business in India. This move comes as part of the bank's efforts to rebuild its domestic investment banking team, reported Bloomberg citing sources. Arcot, who has over two decades of experience in financial services, is expected to join Bank of America toward the end of the year. The bank has been making key appointments earlier this year, including Vikram Sahu as India country head and Mandar Donde, a Bank of America veteran, to lead its investment banking operations in the nation. The US lender is making a concerted effort to regain its footing in the Indian market following the departure of three senior dealmakers from its investment banking unit in November, which was associated with alleged misconduct related to stock offerings. Despite its long-standing presence in India since 1964, Bank of America ranked seventh in equity capital market advisory in 2024 and did not feature in the top ten for M&A advisory, according to Bloomberg-compiled data. Arcot's previous role as an executive director at JPMorgan spanned four years, as indicated by his LinkedIn profile. WPP CEO Mark Read to retire at challenging juncture for agency giant

WPP CEO Mark Read will retire at the end of December after seven years at the helm of the world's largest ad-holding group, according to an announcement posted by the company's board Monday. Read will work with the board to find a successor, the executive said on his LinkedIn. He called out WPP's ongoing work around data and artificial intelligence-driven transformation while acknowledging that the current business environment is 'challenging.' Whoever takes over the CEO spot has a tall order to fill. WPP has contended with a number of painful client losses and spending pullbacks and is in the midst of significantly overhauling some of its most important assets, including WPP Media, formerly GroupM. Read took on the mantle as CEO of WPP seven years ago after the contentious departure of Martin Sorrell, an executive who, over the course of decades, shaped what was once a wire basket company into a sprawling advertising empire. As the successor to an industry titan, Read's tenure has not been short on incident, with challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, periods of global unrest, inflation and the advent of generative AI. Announcing his departure, the agency chief touted his efforts to make AI a central piece of WPP, including through the broader implementation of the Open operating system this year. 'The progress our teams have made has been superb and when I 'demo' WPP Open to our clients they are always amazed by what it can do,' wrote Read, who spent more than 30 years at WPP in total, in his LinkedIn note. Still, WPP's performance has lagged compared to peers, dragged down by a raft of large client losses and sharper spending pullbacks in markets like China. Revenue less pass-through costs declined 2.7% on a like-for-like basis to 2.48 billion pounds, or about $3.2 billion, in Q1 2025. Discussing the quarterly results earlier this spring, Read cautioned that tariffs could further impact brands' appetites for advertising. In an attempt to turn its fortunes around, WPP has enacted some dramatic moves of late. In April, it acquired data collaboration platform InfoSum to further evolve its capabilities beyond legacy identity solutions built on technology like cookies. Earlier this month, it formally rebranded GroupM, its media investment arm, to WPP Media. The change is expected to impact 40% to 45% of the unit's workforce. Paramount, a longtime client, suddenly cut ties with the group last week amid plans for a merger with Skydance Media, Deadline reported, another blow to a business that is trying to turn a new leaf. Some of Read's policies have also proven controversial with employees, such as a four day return-to-office plan that had a haphazard rollout earlier this year. For some analysts, Read stepping down is an expected outcome after years of transformation work failed to return the group to consistent levels of growth. The announcement comes a week out from Cannes Lions, an international gathering that effectively acts as the Oscars for advertising. 'The news is unsurprising because of WPP's lackluster business and stock performance in recent years alongside the installation of a new Board Chairman at the beginning of this year,' said Brian Wieser of Madison and Wall in a note around the news. 'Presumably the delay of the transition of Board Chair role by a year was responsible for prolonging this outcome.' WPP maintains what Wieser described as a 'deep bench' of talent that could succeed Read, and may draw on outside candidates, but still needs to iron out a more concrete strategic direction.
