On a different level – Rory McIlroy hails Open champion Scottie Scheffler

The Northern Irishman began the day six off the lead and he probably knew it was a bridge too far to reel in the in-form American, who had already won the US PGA this year to add to his two Masters titles.
It would have required a fast start and shooting something close to the 61 McIlroy shot on this course as a 16-year-old – virtually impossible in a major setting.
3 down, 1 to go.

'I wish I had have been closer to Scottie going into today and been able to make a real push but he's been on a different level all week and he's been on a different level for the last two years to the rest of us,' he said after his rival won the third leg of the career Grand Slam which McIlroy completed at Augusta in April.
'None of us could live with what he had this week. He is the bar that we're all trying to get to at this point, so hats off to him.
'I think all you can do is admire what he does and how he does it. I think what he does is one thing, but how he does it is another.
'He just goes about his business, doesn't do anything overly flamboyant, but he's the best at executing in the game right now.
'In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive.
'He's been absolutely amazing over these past two to three years. He's an unbelievable player, an incredible champion and a great person too.'
After missing the cut six years ago when The Open returned to Portrush, McIlroy was determined to make it up to the thousands of fans willing him on this week.
But he had too much to do on the last day and a two-under-par 34, including three birdies and a bogey, on the easier front nine, was just not enough.
He was still six shots back at the turn but a double-bogey at the 10th, where he mis-hit a chip, represented the end of his challenge despite two more birdies coming home to finish seventh on 10 under, seven behind Scheffler.
'I felt like I did well. Eight, nine and and 10 were the ones that killed me – not that I was ever going to get to 17-under I don't think,' he added.
'I could have maybe finished second, which would have been better than where I did finish, but only making par off those tee shots on eight and nine and then the double off of 10 after the flier did me in.
'Then I just tried to play a good back nine and finish as well as I could.'

Rangers approach Crystal Palace over loan deal for winger

Rangers have made an approach to Crystal Palace in an attempt to sign winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan until the end of the season. No agreement has been reached between the clubs yet, but Rangers are hopeful of making him the latest addition to Russell Martin's squad. Rak-Sakyi has been linked with several clubs this summer, with Palace reportedly considering his long-term future. The 22-year-old moved to Palace six years ago and has played ten games for the first team. He was loaned to Sheffield United last season and played 34 games in the Championship, scoring seven times. That helped catch the eye of Rangers, who are continuing a huge summer rebuild following the American takeover at Ibrox. Speaking after the team's 1-0 win over Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier, Martin talked about having more new recruits to help the team before the transfer window closes. Rangers would like Rak-Sakyi to be one of those signings but even if a deal is struck quickly he would not be able to play in next week's second leg in Athens. Jalmaro Calvin signs for St Mirren with more new faces on cards

The Jamaican winger, who played with Richard King at Cavalier, has joined his countryman in Paisley after he put pen to paper on a two-year deal. The welcome mat has been rolled out at St Mirren for Jalmaro Calvin as he became the club's ninth summer signing. ‌ The Jamaican international is reunited with team-mate Richard King just weeks after he departed the island's Premier League outfit Cavalier. ‌ The pacy winger has penned a two-year deal at the SMiSA Stadium with the club holding an option to extend terms for a further year. ‌ While at the Kingston-based club, Calvin notched 39 goals in 101 appearances and also featured in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Saints boss Stephen Robinson insists Calvin was someone that always caught the club's eye every time they were scouting King. He said: 'Jalmaro was a player that kept coming up every time we looked at Richard. We've built up a really good relationship with Cavalier and their owner Rudolph Speid. ‌ 'Jalmaro has real pace and energy. He can play wide and he can play through the middle.' The Northern Irishman has outlined his vision for Calvin while comparing him to a former Saints favourite. He added: 'We need to build him up. He's a project for us in terms of getting him used to the Scottish game and the physicality but his electric pace will give us something that we don't have in the squad at this time. He reminds me of Toyosi Olusanya in terms of that raw pace that he can offer us in the wide areas.' ‌ Calvin's capture is the latest addition and follows Ryan Mullen, Liam Donnelly, Jayden Richardson, Richard King, Tunmise Sobowale and Malik Dijksteel signing on. Killian Phillips and Roland Idowu turned loan deals from Crystal Palace and Shrewsbury Town, respectively, into permanent moves. Jalmaro will wear the number 17 shirt this season while fellow new signing Sobowale has been assigned number 19. And it doesn't look like business is done for Saints with former Livingston and current Wycombe Wanderers keeper Shamal George a target. The 27-year-old custodian has only made five appearances for the Chairboys since joining in August 2024 and may be brought in to challenge Peter Urminsky and Mullen for the No 1 jersey.

LIV Golf star shows true colours as he speaks about crowd reaction to Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy may have had to settle for finishing tied for seventh at The Open, but the wave of support for the Masters-winning superstar was unlike anything Tom McKibbin has ever seen LIV Golf star Tom McKibbin has claimed he has never witnessed anything quite like the reception given to Rory McIlroy at The 153rd Open Championship. McIlroy was unable to claim his sixth major at Royal Portrush, as he and his fellow competitors could only look on whilst Scottie Scheffler cruised to victory to take the Claret Jug. ‌ Nevertheless, the 36-year-old received a hero's welcome when he stepped onto the course, with locals desperate to catch sight of the Masters champion. ‌ The highly-regarded McKibbin, who endured a disappointing Open Championship after missing the cut on day two, has now praised the Portrush spectators for their steadfast backing of McIlroy, who eventually secured a T7 finish. ‌ The youngster's comments display that, even though the support was largely reserved for McIlroy, whose pleas he famoulsy ignored to sign up to LIV Golf this year, he was still ecstatic to see his compatriot be given such a reception. "Yeah, no, I didn't see the stuff on Sunday. I obviously seen it the first couple days, on the Friday," the 22-year-old said when questioned about the crowd's response to the Holywood-born star. "I think he was finishing up when we were on the 12th or 13th, so you could obviously see them from very far away, and the crowds were incredible last week. It was something I hadn't seen before, and it was really good, the support that they showed everyone." With speculation that future Open tournaments could return to Portrush – or Portmarnock – McKibbin was questioned about what teeing off at those venues for a major would mean to him, reports Belfast Live. "I think Portmarnock is a great links course, probably one of the best in the country, and again, it's a very sort of special, special place, special golf club with a lot of history," the Northern Irishman said. ‌ "It's a very pure form of golf. As all the rumors are, the Open there would be pretty cool, and to sort of have two Open venues on the island would be pretty cool." McKibbin has suffered from inconsistent form in the Saudi Arabian-backed circuit this year and blamed "silly" errors for his Open Championship woes. "It's been a frustrating last two days. I've played some really nice golf," McKibbin told BBC Sport. "I think it's the best I've played in the four majors I've played in. There was just a few silly mistakes. It's very frustrating with the way I think I've been playing. ‌ "I birdied the first and made some really nice chances, and to drop those shots that I didn't think were too poor of a shot, they were more of a mistake, that's what more frustrating than anything." McKibbin's switch to LIV notably grabbed McIlroy's attention, with the Northern Irishman urging him against joining the breakaway circuit. Nevertheless, McKibbin opted to proceed anyway and has since revealed he harbours no regrets about rejecting the PGA Tour, whilst also explaining how competing alongside stars such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau has sharpened his skills. "No, very happy," he told the Irish Independent in May when asked about any regrets over his move. "I've had a great time. Yeah, I'm very happy. I've been very fortunate to tee up alongside several stellar players who have shone in the majors and battle it out with them."
