Sydney to London with 7 stops along the way? Qantas' historic Kangaroo Route is back (sort of)

CNN10-03-2025
The year is 1947 and the world is continuing its long crawl out of the shadows of war.
You're excited. You've been in Australia for decades, made a small fortune and finally have some time to visit your relatives back in England.
Australia's national airline, Qantas, has just launched its first 'all Qantas' service from Sydney to London aboard its freshly acquired Lockheed Constellation planes.
Referred to as the 'Kangaroo Route,' this is no ordinary point A to point B journey. Taking four days, it includes layovers in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta (now Kolkata), Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli before arriving in the UK capital. (It's much quicker than the 10-day 'flying boat' trips that launched in 1938.)
The plane only holds 29 passengers, alongside three pilots, one navigator, one radio operator, two flight engineers and three cabin crew.
The price? A whopping £525, which would amount to around £17,400 (about $22,450) in 2025, according to the Bank of England's inflation calculator.
Flash forward to today and travelers have a variety of flights to choose from to get between Sydney and London in under 30 hours, with a single stopover.
But where's the fun in that?
For those with a little more time and cash on their hands, luxury travel operator Captain's Choice has just launched a new 14-day tour called the 'Pioneering Spirit of the Kangaroo Route.'
Taking off on February 3, 2026, it will follow a similar flight path as the one Qantas first wholly operated in 1947, promising guests 'a journey born of nostalgia, yet one enhanced by the conveniences of the modern era.'
Passengers will fly on a chartered Qantas Airbus A330-300, making stops in Darwin, Singapore, Kolkata, Colombo, Cairo, Toulouse and Rome, staying in luxury hotels and experiencing the highlights of each destination along the way.
'It has been on my radar for many years to recreate this iconic route,' says Captain's Choice CEO Bas Bosschieter.
'The Kangaroo Route has a special meaning for Australians. We like to design truly unique itineraries at Captain's Choice and this one fits so well with our brand —- being experts in private travel, and given our association with Qantas. We have a long history with Qantas, with our first ever journey through Asia and Africa in 1994 taking place aboard a privately chartered Qantas 767.'
Bosschieter notes that a considerable amount of time went into planning this journey alongside Qantas. He says they spoke to historical experts and will include some nods to the original route throughout the trip.
'Some of this is still being planned but will include retro merchandise, ex-Qantas pilots sharing their stories, and perhaps even having a Super Constellation at our welcome dinner,' he says.
'I recently spoke to someone who traveled to Australia on the Kangaroo Route, and we hope to include some of those stories throughout the journey too.'
The price of the trip starts at 49,950 Australian dollars (about $31,000) per person and includes all meals, drinks, hotels, tours, transfers, tips and, of course, flights.
Guests can tailor their stopovers to their personal interests and experience some VIP perks as well. For instance, in Sri Lanka they can meet a legendary Sri Lankan cricketer before an exclusive dinner at the prime minister's residence.
In Rome, they will take an after-hours private tour of the Vatican Museum. Nearing the end of the trip, travelers will get an insider's tour of the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France, and a farewell dinner set under the wings of a Concorde jet.
The hotels are as luxurious as one would expect at that price point. In Singapore, for example, they will stay at the Ritz Carlton Millenia.
Bosschieter tells CNN that interest has been strong and the Business Class spots have already sold out.
'In Economy Class we are only selling 150 of the 269 seats to allow our guests to have more room to spread out,' he adds.
'This also means all guests will be seated in a window or aisle seat. With only one sector longer than 4.5 hours, guests will have time to enjoy Business Class catering throughout the aircraft and hand-selected wines and beverages from around the world.'
Why is the trip so popular? The CEO says he thinks the Kangaroo Route taps into a sense of nostalgia for many Australians.
'It also highlights how far air travel and travel in general has come,' says Bosschieter. 'We will be able to recreate the route in a lot more comfort than those who originally traveled … It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.'
The timing of the Captain's Choice trip is notable; 2026 is also the year Qantas plans to add another page to its aviation history book with the launch of its long in-development 'Project Sunrise,' a plan to operate the world's longest nonstop flights.
The airline will offer flights from Sydney to London and New York that will be serviced by specially configured Airbus A350-1000 jets, with flight times of up to 20 hours.
Project Sunrise was first announced by Qantas in 2017. The name was inspired by the secretive, danger-filled flights made from Perth to Sri Lanka en route to London during World War II. They lasted so long pilots saw two sunrises.
In 2019, Qantas conducted three trial research trips to gather data to present to Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which needed proof that pilots, cabin crew and passengers can cope with up to 22 hours in the air.
During these flights, pilots wore brainwave monitors and had their urine tested in the weeks before and after the journey to track levels of melatonin, a hormone that controls sleep cycles. Passengers in the main cabin wore monitoring devices, allowing scientists to study how their 'health, well-being and body clock' were impacted by a set of variables including lighting, food and drink, movement, sleep patterns and inflight entertainment.
No launch date has been set, though Qantas says the first Airbus A350-1000 jets that will be used to service the ultra-long-haul flights are scheduled to arrive in mid-2026.

Recovery Guru Unveils Free Comparison Site for Recovery Products

Shopping for recovery gear just got easier. Recovery Guru, known for its health and wellness reviews, has launched a new comparison website that puts recovery tools head-to-head. The idea is simple: instead of comparing phones or gadgets like you see on this site lines up saunas, ice baths, massage guns, grounding mats, and more. Making Choices Simple For many people, buying recovery equipment can feel overwhelming. The market is full of different brands, price points, and features. Recovery Guru's new platform aims to take away that confusion. Users can pick two products and instantly see their specs, pros, and differences. No need to read ten separate reviews—everything is in one place. What You Can Expect The site is free to use and doesn't require sign-ups. Navigation is straightforward: select a category, choose two products, and compare. Each comparison highlights key details like size, weight, materials, heating or cooling strength, warranties, and cost. For those who want more details, there are links back to Recovery Guru's in-depth reviews. Updates are made every few days to keep information fresh. In a space where brands regularly tweak designs or release new products, this helps ensure accuracy. Transparency Built In Recovery Guru makes it clear when affiliate links are used. This means the site may earn a small commission if someone makes a purchase, but the evaluations remain independent. Readers can see the disclosure easily, which adds trust to the platform. Why It Matters Now Recovery products are becoming part of everyday routines. Ice baths are no longer just for athletes, and infrared saunas are moving from spas into homes. More people are buying massage guns, compression boots, and grounding mats to improve recovery and overall wellness. With so many options on the market, it's hard to know which one is worth the money. That's where this tool steps in. By giving quick comparisons, the site saves time and helps people make decisions with confidence. Whether it's someone curious about their first sauna or a long-time athlete comparing cold plunge tubs, the platform makes the process easier. The Bigger Picture This new tool also shows how recovery is becoming a bigger part of the wellness industry. Clear, unbiased information is something shoppers are demanding. Recovery Guru's comparison site delivers that in a format that feels simple and accessible. It's not just about elite athletes or biohackers anymore. Everyday Australians are investing in their recovery. Having a resource that breaks down the options without complicated jargon is a step forward. Bottom Line Recovery Guru's comparison website fills an important gap. It offers clarity in a market that's often confusing and crowded. With its free access, no login requirements, and easy-to-use format, it's built for anyone who wants to make smarter choices about recovery gear. The platform is still new, but it already signals a shift in how people research and buy wellness products. It shows that simple tools—clear comparisons, honest information, and regular updates—can make a big difference in an industry that continues to grow. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

GE Vernova to Invest $41M in Facility Expansion: Time to Buy the Stock?

GE Vernova Inc. (GEV) recently announced a plan to invest $41 million to expand generator capacity at its Schenectady, NY, facility, in a bid to meet rising global energy demand. The investment will enhance the company's gas power capacity through expanding the assembly and testing of the H65 and H84 generators, which pair with its most efficient HA gas turbines. This expansion comes as part of the company's larger plan of investing $9 billion through 2028, with GEV having announced $720 million in investments at its U.S. manufacturing facilities so far this year. This strategic expansion solidifies GE Vernova's pivotal role in the global energy transition, making it an increasingly attractive investment for those seeking a resilient and forward-looking energy stock. However, before making an investment, it would be prudent to delve deep into the company's recent performance at the bourses, future growth prospects as well as risks (if any) to investing in the same. This way, one can make an informed decision. GEV Stock Outperforms Industry, Sector & S&P 500 Shares of GE Vernova have surged an impressive 33.1% in the past three months, outperforming the Zacks Alternative-Energy industry's growth of 13.7% and the broader Zacks Oils-Energy sector's rise of 5.5%. It has also outpaced the S&P 500's growth of 10.9% over the same period. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research A similar stellar performance has been delivered by other industry players, such as Bloom Energy (BE) and Talen Energy Corp. (TLN), whose shares have surged 136.7% and 56.4%, respectively, in the past three months. What's Been Pushing GEV Stock Up? GE Vernova's advanced technologies support industries across the board in the global shift to sustainable energy, reducing emissions. Its expanding clean energy and low-carbon footprint initiatives, as mentioned below, are boosting investor confidence, which must have resulted in its significant three-month share price growth. Impressively, in July 2025, GEV received an order to supply 29 LM2500XPRESS units to Crusoe AI data centers. In the same month, GE Vernova announced second-quarter 2025 results, which highlighted a 4% increase in orders, 11% growth in revenues and a more than $5 billion rise in backlog. The company also announced its decision to acquire France's AI-specialist, Alteia, to integrate its AI-powered visual intelligence platform into utility operations. GEV also received a contract to build a critical substation in Germany. Further, its nuclear energy unit and Fortum entered into an early works agreement to enhance the potential deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Finland and Sweden. In June, the company announced plans to invest $50 million to establish a cutting-edge Canadian BWRX-300 Engineering and Service Centre in the Durham region near the Ontario Power Generation Darlington New Nuclear Project site. In the same month, GE Vernova received a contract to upgrade three GT26 gas turbines at Uniper's Grain power plant, starting 2026. Earlier in May, GEV secured an order for five 7H-Class gas turbines from Saudi Arabia. Will GEV Hold On To Its Winning Streak? The International Energy Agency ('IEA') projects wind to become the second largest source of global renewable electricity generation, surpassing hydropower, by 2030-end, with onshore wind capacity additions expected to almost double and continue dominating wind capacity growth. This should bode well for GE Vernova's wind business, supported by consistent investments and a 57,000-unit turbine fleet. Moreover, investments into the grid, the backbone of the electric power system, is projected to double through 2030 and overtake worldwide renewable power investment, according to the IEA. This should also benefit GE Vernova over the long run, with more than 95% of power transmission utilities in the world equipped with components from its Electrification segment. In line with this, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for GEV's long-term (three-to-five years) earnings growth rate is pegged at a solid 18%. In fact, the growing investment in renewable-sourced electricity worldwide has also been bolstering the long-term growth prospects of other clean energy stocks, such as TLN and BE. Notably, the long-term earnings growth rate for TLN is 15.5%, while that for BE is 28%. Now, let's take a quick look at GEV's near-term estimates to see if that also depicts the same growth story. Estimates for GEV The Zacks Consensus Estimate for GEV's 2025 and 2026 sales implies an improvement of 6.7% and 11.4%, respectively, year over year. A similar improvement can be witnessed in the company's 2025 and 2026 earnings estimates. Moreover, GEV's near-term earnings estimate has moved north over the past 60 days. The upward revision in earnings estimates indicates analysts' increasing confidence in the stock's earnings-generating capabilities. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Risks of Investing in GEV Stock Despite boasting solid growth opportunities, GE Vernova does face a few challenges and a prudent investor should be aware of those. Notably, the global supply-chain crisis has been a common challenge affecting manufacturers across industries in recent times, with GE Vernova being no exception. The company relies on complex global supply networks for components used in its gas turbines, wind turbines and grid infrastructure. Specifically, it purchases approximately $20 billion in materials and components sourced from over 100 countries. Therefore, disruptions in the availability of raw materials, such as steel and rare earth elements, along with logistical delays, have affected and may adversely impact GE Vernova's production timelines and hike its input costs, thereby hurting its bottom line. Moreover, the installation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines can be particularly affected by weather-related scheduling delays due to their complex infrastructure, higher wind speeds and the challenges of accessing offshore sites. Realizing the challenging market environment of the offshore wind industry, GE Vernova has halted its engagement in new offshore wind turbine orders since last year. So, offshore wind remains a challenging business for the company. GEV Stock Trading at a Premium In terms of valuation, GEV's forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) is 53.16X, a premium to its peer group's average of 15.99X. This suggests that investors will be paying a higher price than the company's expected earnings growth compared to its peers. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Its industry peers are also trading at a premium to the peer group average. While TLN is trading at a forward 12-month earnings of 24.35X, BE is trading at 68.38X. Final Thoughts To conclude, investors interested in GE Vernova may wait for a better entry point, considering its premium valuation and challenges in the offshore wind business. However, those who already own this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock may continue to retain it, given its robust price performance, consistent order wins in key clean energy segments, and solid earnings growth potential supported by optimistic sales estimates. Centrelink cash boost for more than five million Aussies to hit bank accounts in weeks

Millions of Australians receiving Centrelink payments will see a small increase from next month when the latest round of indexation kicks in. Many social security payments are indexed twice a year, in March and September, to keep up with rising costs. More than five million recipients will benefit from the cash boost, including more than 2.6 million age pensioners. Those receiving JobSeeker, ABSTUDY, Parenting Payment, Commonwealth Rent Assistance, the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment will also see a boost from September 20. Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said the indexation meant Aussies would have more to help cover everyday costs like groceries and healthcare. RELATED Centrelink blow for 460,000 pensioners as major change to deeming rates announced Centrelink alert for retiring Baby Boomers wanting to caravan around Australia Controversial $10 billion push to tax inheritance in Australia 'The social security system must be grounded in fairness, which is why we adjust supports as the economy changes,' she said. 'We'll continue to make sure the system is there to support those who need it most, ensuring that everyone can make ends meet and no one gets left behind.' COTA Australia CEO Patricia Sparrow has welcomed the age pension increase and said it was one of the biggest increases to the rate over recent years. "The idea that all older Australians are wealthy is a myth. In reality, over one in four live in poverty. For those struggling with skyrocketing costs, an extra $29.70 a fortnight will bring real relief,' she in a blow for age pensioners, the government has confirmed deeming rates will now be gradually returned to pre-pandemic settings. Deeming rates have been frozen at 0.25 and 2.25 per cent since 2020, initially as an emergency pandemic measure. From September 20, the rates will increase to 0.75 and 2.75 per cent. Sparrow said the change would no doubt come as a shock to some Aussies, but she said the move would give greater clarity to help Aussies plan and budget. 'Any decrease in fixed incomes is difficult for people to manage. However, staging the changes and coupling the introduction of the change with one of the largest pension increases in the past 60 years should offset the impact for many pensioners," she said. You can read more about the deeming rate changes here. How much will Centrelink payments increase? Age Pension recipients will see their maximum fortnightly payment go up to $1,178.70, an increase of $29.70. This takes into account the Pension Supplement and Energy Supplement. Partnered pensions will see their maximum fortnightly payment increase to $888.50 each, an increase of $22.40. JobSeeker rates will increase to $793.60 per fortnight, up $12.50, for singles aged 22 or over with no children. The partnered JobSeeker rate will increase to $726.50 each per fortnight, up $11.40. ABSTUDY rates will also increase to $793.60 per fortnight, up $12.50, for those aged 22 or over living at home or away from home. Parenting Payment maximum fortnightly rates will increase to $1,039.70, up $16.20, including the supplement and energy supplement. Partnered parents will see their rate increase to $734.30 a fortnight, up $11.40. You can see the full list of increases here.
