
Digostics Announces University Trial of New At-home Type 1 Diabetes Test Underway
GTT@home is an OGTT developed by British diabetes home-testing company Digostics that uses finger-prick blood samples to measure how well the body processes glucose. The test, being studied at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., has been shown to be as accurate as lab-based OGTTs when used in adults with glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes, or in pregnant individuals to diagnosis gestational diabetes. The GTT@home test has successfully been implemented in several UK NHS Trusts to screen for gestational diabetes in pregnancy.
Dr. Jennifer Sherr, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology and the Medical Director of Pediatric Diabetes at Yale School of Medicine and co-lead principal investigator of the trial, said: 'As the presence of diabetes autoantibodies foretells an eventual diagnosis of T1D, it is critical to conduct an OGTT to stage the disease, which helps predict the risk of progression over time. Yet, in the current paradigm this requires coming to a clinical center or laboratory and getting venous blood draws. Despite knowing there is an increased risk of diabetes many individuals struggle to undergo an OGTT for staging, or repeat the test to permit ongoing monitoring. An at-home OGTT would alleviate this barrier. The ability to have those at risk use a product that is simple, requires fingerpricks instead of venous draws, and can be done within a person's own home at a date and time that is convenient for them would be a fantastic step forward for both patients and providers.'
T1D can be diagnosed at any age, and it is the most common childhood autoimmune disease, affecting around one in 350 children. In T1D the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. It affects every aspect of health and well-being and results in lifelong insulin dependence and an increased risk of major health problems such as heart disease, blindness, and kidney failure. In 40% or more of children the diagnosis of T1D is not made until the child has become severely unwell and presents with metabolic decompensation, which is known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening diabetes complication.
Dr. Raquel Lopez-Diez, Scientist at Breakthrough T1D commented, 'Breakthrough T1D is excited to fund this important work with Yale University School of Medicine to explore an at-home alternative to OGTT for glycemic monitoring in the early stages of type 1 diabetes. Traditional in-clinic OGTTs are time-consuming, can be challenging to navigate for younger individuals, and require significant clinic resources. As new therapies emerge that can delay and, hopefully, one day prevent the progression of type 1 diabetes, it is critical to have the tools to accurately and reliably monitor and diagnose the early stages of the disease. A validated at-home testing approach would represent a major breakthrough. We look forward to seeing the results of this important study.'
T1D develops in stages over time, and early stages can be detected through a simple blood test. In stage 1 the body develops islet autoantibodies but the blood glucose levels are still normal. In stage 2, islet autoantibodies are present and individuals experience abnormal blood glucose or dysglycemia, and by stage 3 an individual has the clinical diagnosis of T1D and symptoms may begin to appear due to significant loss of insulin-producing cells.
The OGTT is the gold-standard test recommended for defining the stage of T1D a person is experiencing, and it is the most sensitive test for monitoring T1D stages 1 and 2. Hospital-based OGTTs are often not well tolerated because they require placement of an intravenous line inserted into the vein or multiple blood draws, as several blood samples taken over 2-hours in a healthcare setting.
Study lead Dr. Alfonso Galderisi, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, confirmed that the study will recruit 60 patients aged eight and over. 'To understand the ease of conducting the test, participants will complete an unsupervised GTT@home test. Five to seven days later, participants will come to our research unit and we will conduct the standard of care OGTT alongside a supervised GTT@home, with the results of the two tests compared to assess accuracy. We will also be interviewing participants to assess their perception of the two methods used to conduct OGTTs.'
Glucose tolerance tests are performed in the morning after an overnight fast. The GTT@home test kit contains the test device, finger prickers for blood sample collection, a preformulated glucose drink, and detailed instructions. The process begins with an initial finger prick blood sample, followed by the consumption of the glucose drink. Two hours later, a second blood sample is taken. With standard clinic-based OGTTs, individuals need to travel to a clinic early in the morning and then undergo the two blood draws two hours apart and have an IV inserted.
The GTT@home device analyses blood samples shortly after completion of the test and shares results in a timely manner directly with the study teams or clinician. Expedited analysis of samples eliminates the risk of sample degradation that can affect hospital-based OGTTs when samples are not sent to the lab immediately, improving diagnostic reliability.

An Olympic champion who survived liver failure and won two gold medals at the British Transplant Games received last-minute bike help from The Salvation Army. GB athlete Jenny Glithero, who had a life-saving liver transplant in 2021, visited the charity's Recycles Booth House workshop in Swindon for repairs before the competition. She thanked the charity's social enterprise bike workshop for its assistance and community work. Held in Oxford from July 31 to August 3, the British Transplant Games saw Jenny secure gold wins in the women's 30-39 8km time trial and the 12km road race. Simon Styles, leading the Swindon Recycles project, said: "It's not every day an Olympic champion walks into our workshop. "We're honoured she trusted us with her bike at such a crucial moment—and thrilled her races ended in triumph. "Her story of resilience, from surviving liver failure to standing on the podium, mirrors the determination we see in the people we support every day." Following her visit, Jenny said: "Thanks so much for your generosity. "To receive a big smile and a helping hand two days before race day—fixing my pedals—meant the world. "The Salvation Army's work is incredible: getting people on bikes, upskilling, and offering purpose in times of need." Following her emergency liver transplant in May 2021, Jenny triumphed at the 2023 World Transplant Games, securing her reputation as a strong advocate for organ donation and post-transplant recovery. Its programme provides affordable bike sales, repairs, and servicing to the public, with proceeds reinvested into supporting participants. ‘Hidden gem': S.F. mineral society marks 90 years of breaking rocks at unmarked clubhouse
Rocks have not changed in 90 years, and neither have the type of people who would join the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society, which started in 1935 for the hobby of rock cutting and polishing and standing around talking about rocks they've collected, no doubt holding hidden gems within. On Sunday, the members gathered in their clubhouse, which has no sign in front and the windows boarded up, with gravel on the surface for the effect. Some brought rocks to crack open, and some came to look at the spectacular and rare finds in the display cases. 'You open this inconspicuous green door, and suddenly you are standing before one of the premier private collections of mineral specimens in the city,' said David Zandman, the club's corresponding secretary, who noted that only the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park has a larger collection of gems, rocks and minerals. 'This is truly a hidden gem in the sunset,' he said, hazarding a pun. 'Most people don't know we are here.' The people who do know were gathered in the meeting on folding chairs, listening intently as Roy Leggitt was lecturing on gem faceting techniques. Anyone familiar with the British show 'Detectorists' would be familiar with the seriousness with which they approach their hobby. 'We still have a sense of fun,' said Tony DeLeon, past president. The 90th anniversary celebration runs the first three weekends of August and was launched by a dance party in the clubhouse with the display cases and the library of thousands of books and minerals right there among the dancers. On Friday, the clubhouse will feature karaoke. The clubhouse is open to the public this weekend and next, and as an enticement, a spinning grinder was set up on the Judan Street sidewalk, with a member shaping and polishing stone. 'It's an old world approach,' DeLeon said. 'That's how it has been done since the early 1500s.' The club is not that old, but it does go back to the Great Depression, when 16 college professors and hobbyists met on the rainy night of Jan. 4, 1935, in the home of E.W. Shanks on Spruce Street in Presidio Heights. The Northern California Mineral Society was the original name to reflect the founders' general interest in the scientific aspects of minerals. The society soon outgrew Shanks' home and rotated its meetings to public libraries and middle schools, before the club, renamed the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society, was able to purchase a furniture store four blocks from Ocean Beach. The building cost $22,000, with members pooling it together. 'In the heyday of rock counting, in the 1940s and 1950s, we had 700 members,' said Bob Kozak, vice president and program director. 'There was no Internet, so people had time on their hands.' An example is a grandfather clock made out of jade that members took five years to make. It still works and stands near the door, though it is only used for special occasions to protect the gear structure. The club has 350 members, paying annual dues of $30. 'We are trying to work our way back to 700,' Kozak said. 'It's combining science, research and artistic expression. We like going and looking for things. It requires detective work.' Twice a year, the club organizes field trips to locations that members are not inclined to reveal. Sometimes it is public land that allows exploration, and sometimes it is private property on a riverbed or dormant mines. Their findings are brought to the clubhouse, where there is a full workshop for cutting open the rocks to reveal the minerals within. These are then made into jewelry and ornamental items. Around his neck, Kozak wears a polished jade pendant that started as a rough piece of rock found in British Columbia. Twenty hours of cutting, grinding and polishing later, it was a piece of jewelry. 'The satisfaction is that you learn from the instructors at the club how to do things, and then you transform it,' he said. On Sunday, there were four lectures, with Leggitt's talk on gem faceting giving way to a discussion of quartz, the most common mineral on Earth. A dozen members and guests sat before lecturer Debbie Fang. Meanwhile, in the back room, Christopher DeWinter was working the power grinder to polish stones as a hands-on demonstration, and instructor Jean Ng was metalsmithing, like a blacksmith with iron. In technology and entertainment, it was a long way from Outside Lands, the concert just a few blocks north. You could call what they were doing Inside Lands. Five new members signed up, paying their $30 initiation fee plus the $30 annual membership fee. 'There is so much joy to share, in cultivating the creativity of high level jewelry making,' said Kirk Kwiatkowski, club president and a professional faceter of gemstones. 'We all try to bring out the best in each other in our art and expertise.' Eli Wennberg-Smith, 26, and Hannah Majewski, 25, were walking home from a friend's home when they came upon the open house. Intrigued, they walked in and just kept walking, through two doors, until they were in the back room wearing safety goggles and learning how to work the grinder on a chunk of jasper. 'Everyone was so friendly that we just got sucked in, in the best possible way,' said Majewski, a special ed teacher in San Francisco. 'Growing up I always collected rocks, but I never knew it was possible to do this without buying thousands of dollars worth of equipment.' The equipment is here with a low daily fee. Three years' worth of rocks she's picked up are in her apartment closet and weighing down her backpack. 'I want to break them open and see if there is something cool inside,' said Majewski, who walked out with a membership application. 'I'm pretty busy as a teacher, but it would be a stress relief.' DeLeon found his way to the club when he was a senior at Lincoln High School in 1977. A friend had a box of rocks his grandfather had left him, and they came down to knock on the door and see if there was value in them, which they planned to convert to cash for a hot rod. There was no value, hence no hot rod. But he ended up taking a course in gems and minerals at San Francisco State, which meant a field trip to the club. By then it was fate. He became a chemist identifying minerals in water pipes, and ultimately president of the club. He already has his retirement plan set. 'I want to be a lapidary instructor here, teaching the cutting and shaping of rocks,' he said. 'It is volunteerism that makes this operation work.' Before the pandemic, the club held an annual show each August at the County Fair Building in the park, with 60 exhibits and 40 vendors. The annual August show in the park has not come back, but there is hope and momentum building through the weekend open houses at the clubhouse. 'We're practicing for the 100th,' DeLeon said. 'Wait till you see what we do then.'

Record warm seas help to bring extraordinary new species to UK waters
The UK's seas have had their warmest start to the year since records began, helping to drive some dramatic changes in marine life and for its fishing communities. The average surface temperature of UK waters in the seven months to the end of July was more than 0.2C higher than any year since 1980, BBC analysis of provisional Met Office data suggests. That might not sound much, but the UK's seas are now considerably warmer than even a few decades ago, a trend driven by humanity's burning of fossil fuels. That is contributing to major changes in the UK's marine ecosystems, with some new species entering our seas and others struggling to cope with the heat. Scientists and amateur naturalists have observed a remarkable range of species not usually widespread in UK waters, including octopus, bluefin tuna and mauve stinger jellyfish. The abundance of these creatures can be affected by natural cycles and fishing practices, but many researchers point to the warming seas as a crucial part of their rise. "Things like jellyfish, like octopus... they are the sorts of things that you expect to respond quickly to climate change," said Dr Bryce Stewart, a senior research fellow at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. "It's a bit like the canary in the coal mine - the sorts of quite extraordinary changes we've seen over the last few years really do indicate an ecosystem under flux," he added. Harry Polkinghorne, a keen 19-year-old angler, described how he regularly sees bluefin tuna now, including large schools of the fish in frantic feeding frenzies. "It's just like watching a washing machine in the water," he said. "You can just see loads of white water, and then tuna fins and tuna jumping out." Bluefin tuna numbers have been building over the past decade in south-west England for a number of reasons, including warmer waters and better management of their populations, Dr Stewart explained. Heather Hamilton, who snorkels off the coast of Cornwall virtually every week with her father David, has swum through large blooms of salps, a species that looks a bit like a jellyfish. They are rare in the UK, but the Hamiltons have seen more and more of these creatures in the last couple of years. "You're seeing these big chains almost glowing slightly like fairy lights", she said. "It just felt very kind of out of this world, something I've never seen before." But extreme heat, combined with historical overfishing, is pushing some of the UK's cold-adapted species like cod and wolf-fish to their limits. "We're definitely seeing this shift of cooler water species moving north in general," said Dr Stewart. Marine heatwave conditions - prolonged periods of unusually high sea surface temperatures - have been present around parts of the UK virtually all year. Some exceptional sea temperatures have also been detected by measurement buoys off the UK coast, known as WaveNet and run by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). And the record 2025 warmth comes after very high sea temperatures in 2023 and 2024 too. The Met Office says its data from the end of June 2024 to now is provisional and will be finalised in the coming months, but this usually results in only very minor changes. "All the way through the year, on average it's been warmer than we've really ever seen [for the UK's seas]," said Prof John Pinnegar, the lead adviser on climate change at Cefas. "[The seas] have been warming for over a century and we're also seeing heatwaves coming through now," he added. "What used to be quite a rare phenomenon is now becoming very, very common." Like heatwaves on land, sea temperatures are affected by natural variability and short-term weather. Clear, sunny skies with low winds – like much of the UK had in early July - can heat up the sea surface more quickly. But the world's oceans have taken up about 90% of the Earth's excess heat from humanity's emissions of planet-warming gases like carbon dioxide. That is making marine heatwaves more likely and more intense. "The main contributor to the marine heatwaves around the UK is the buildup of heat in the ocean," said Dr Caroline Rowland, head of oceans, cryosphere and climate change at the Met Office. "We predict that these events are going to become more frequent and more intense in the future" due to climate change, she added. With less of a cooling sea breeze, these warmer waters can amplify land heatwaves, and they also have the potential to bring heavier rainfall. Hotter seas are also less able to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which could mean that our planet heats up more quickly. The sea warmth is already posing challenges to fishing communities. Ben Cooper has been a fisherman in Whitstable on the north Kent coast since 1997, and relies heavily on the common whelk, a type of sea snail. But the whelk is a cold-water species, and a marine heatwave in 2022 triggered a mass die-off of these snails in the Thames Estuary. "Pretty much 75% of our earnings is through whelks, so you take that away and all of a sudden you're struggling," explained Mr Cooper. Before the latest heatwave, the whelks had started to recover but he said the losses had forced him to scale back his business. Mr Cooper recalled fishing trips with his father in the 1980s. Back then, they would rely on cod. "We lost the cod because basically the sea just got too warm. They headed further north," he said. The precise distribution of marine species varies from year to year, but researchers expect the UK's marine life to keep changing as humans continue to heat up the Earth. "The fishers might in the long term have to change the species that they target and that they catch," suggested Dr Pinnegar. "And we as consumers might have to change the species that we eat."
