Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam's 'Thug Life', which was released amidst much anticipation, has faced many problems as it failed at the box office. The film failed to impress audiences across the country in any language.
Earlier,
Kamal Haasan
had announced that the film would be released on OTT 8 weeks after its release. This decision showed his confidence in the film.
National Multiplex Association fines 'Thug Life' team
However, after the film failed in theaters, the 8-week contract was canceled and the OTT release date was also changed. Based on this agreement, the National Multiplex Association had allowed the film 'Thug Life' to be released in their theaters.
According to The Hindu, the National Multiplex Association has imposed a fine of Rs. 25 lakh on the film crew due to breach of contract.
'Thug Life' OTT rights lessened
Additionally, Netflix had offered Rs. 130 crore for the OTT rights of 'That Life'. But after the film failed, they reduced the amount to Rs. 90 crore.
It is reported that in the subsequent negotiations, both sides signed an agreement for Rs. 110 crore. Box office failure and OTT contract changes have complicated the status of 'Thug Life'.
In today's changing entertainment landscape, these clashes between theaters and OTT platforms reveal not only the commercial viability of the film but also the new challenges facing the Tamil film industry.
Fails at the box office despite substantial cast and crew
'Thug Life' features Silambarasan, Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Bagavathi Perumal, Ashok Selvan, and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others alongside Kamal Haasan in the lead role. AR Rahman scored the music for the gangster drama, while the cinematography was handled by Ravi K Chandran. 'Thug Life' has completed 3 weeks of theatrical run, but the mega-budget film earned less than Rs 65 crore to end as a box office disaster.
