Healthcare is already a hotbed of AI activity, which has more than proved its worth as a tool for diagnosing illness, monitoring recovery, and developing new medicines.
But globally, the industry is still grappling with longstanding challenges, including shortages of clinical staff, aging populations, and managing the front-loaded costs of transitioning to more preventative models of healthcare.
This is where AI agents, the next wave of AI transformation, will come in. Compared to existing AI (think of the current generation of language-based chatbots like ChatGPT), Agentic AI is capable of carrying out far more complex tasks with minimal human interaction.
To give a simple example, a non-agentic computer vision-based AI algorithm can be used to scan medical images and spot early warning signs of cancer.
An agentic AI, on the other hand, could cross-reference the images with other clinical patient data, create a detailed report for a doctor, and schedule a follow-up appointment, all without human involvement.
This switch from passive provider of information to active action-taking is what defines the newest generation of tools and applications driven by agentic AI.
Experts predict it will soon be just as transformational to healthcare as today's cutting-edge computer vision, chatbots and other AI innovations have proven to be. So here's an overview of how it may soon be put to work in hospitals, doctors' surgeries, and care homes near you.
Agentic Healthcare Intelligence
Several use cases for agentic applications have been identified in healthcare. Although most are currently theoretical, they give us an idea of how agents could surpass the capability of non-agentic tools and apps.
Automated triage and scheduling systems could relieve clinical and administrative staff of much of the burden of routine procedures and paperwork. Rather than simply asking patients to answer questions, it can use computer vision to carry out initial examinations and flag urgent cases for immediate help.
AI agents have also been built to assist with clinical decision-making. By augmenting large language models like GPT-4 with tools to understand MRI, CT and other medical data, one test found an agent could reach a correct diagnosis in 91% of cases.
They will also become increasingly useful in remote patient monitoring. Their ability to make more accurate decisions about when to intervene and how to protect patient privacy and security will mean more people can stay out of hospital and be treated at home.
Agents are even being put to use in clinical trials, carrying out tasks such as screening applications, matching candidates to trials and booking transportation to the test facility.
For non-clinical use, the AI health monitors we use on smartwatches and fitness bands will become much smarter and more proactive. Rather than simply measuring heart rate, skin temperature and so on, they'll be ready to give us a holistic overview of our health at any time and then monitor the action we take towards improving it.
Finally, agents will help complete administrative tasks more efficiently by automating decisions around scheduling, reading and replying to emails, and handling billing and commissioning. While this can be done by existing AI on a task-by-task basis, agents will take oversight of entire workflows or even business functions, reducing human error and time spent on routine work.
A great deal of academic research is currently taking place into how we can safely use and understand the impact of agentic AI in healthcare. Answering these questions will play a bit part in helping these use cases get off the ground.
What About The Risks?
With greater autonomy and the ability to interact with external systems, AI agents clearly introduce new risks that could be particularly dangerous in healthcare ecosystems.
Data security is an obvious one, and new security measures will be required to balance the need for agents to access personal data with the dangers this creates. Confidential patient information, as well as control over critical systems, could be at stake if agents are compromised by malicious individuals or groups or just don't work like they're supposed to.
Agents will also force healthcare service providers to answer questions and provide assurances about accountability. AI can't take responsibility for its actions, so how is it shared between the healthcare industry, AI developers, and the clinical staff and patients who use it?
Then there's the simple fact that AI is often wrong. Whether it's down to bad data or hallucination, it simply isn't right 100 percent of the time. Of course, neither are humans. So when is it right to hand over the reins?
And, of course, we're far from the point where anyone thinks it's right to let machines make decisions that affect humans without human oversight. So, how do we make sure that oversight is in place, effective and accountable?
Overcoming all of these challenges will be critical to safely integrating agentic AI into the healthcare system and unlocking the benefits it promises.
The Future Of Agents In Healthcare
By the end of the decade, we can expect agentic AI to have radically changed the way healthcare is delivered, managed and experienced.
Globally, healthcare has for some time understood the importance of moving from reactive to preventative care. Agents will proactively interact with wearables and home sensors to enable far earlier interventions when warning signs are detected.
This will happen within an agentic ecosystem, which delivers fully personalized care by fine-tuning treatment in response to patient data. Meanwhile, the workload of clinical professionals will involve far less time spent filling in forms or reviewing notes and more time using their uniquely human skills and experience to improve patient outcomes.
Access to healthcare in underserved areas could increase, with agents acting as gateways to telemedicine services, triaging initial contacts as well as freeing up human doctors to see more patients.
Of course, all of this depends on solving the challenges mentioned here. Once society understands the impact agents can have, there will be a demand for evidence that it can be trusted. By establishing where the boundaries lie as we build, test and use it today, we can lay the groundwork for a safe, agentic tomorrow.

NICE Backs Leadless Pacemakers for Some Heart Patients
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has provisionally recommended leadless cardiac pacemaker implantation for patients with bradyarrhythmias who require single-chamber pacing. In draft guidance, NICE said there was insufficient evidence to support their use for dual-chamber pacing outside of research settings. Benefits Over Traditional Pacemakers The recommendation is based on an evidence review involving over one million patients across multiple studies. These included a randomised controlled trial, four systematic reviews with meta-analyses, five registry studies, four prospective studies, and two retrospective studies. Leadless pacemakers were found to be effective at detecting abnormal heart rhythms, restoring normal pacing, and improving quality of life. Unlike conventional transvenous pacemakers (TVPs), they do not require a chest incision, reducing the risk of infection and other complications, the regulator noted. 'The evidence demonstrates that leadless pacemakers can effectively regulate heart rhythm while reducing the risk of complications associated with traditional pacemakers, particularly infections and lead-related issues,' said Dr Anastasia Chalkidou, HealthTech programme director at NICE. How Leadless Pacemakers Work Bradyarrhythmias, which affect around 1 in 1000 people are typically treated with TVPs. These devices consist of a subcutaneous pacemaker box and leads that connect to the heart. For single-chamber leadless pacemakers, the proximal end is attached to a deflectable delivery catheter system. It is usually inserted percutaneously through the femoral or jugular vein using an introducer sheath. It is then moved into the right atrium, through the tricuspid valve, and into the right ventricle. Dual-chamber systems, which are still under evaluation, involve placing two devices — one in the right atrium and another in the right ventricle — during a single procedure. NICE highlighted that TVPs are known to carry risks, including lead failure and generator-related complications. Leadless pacemaker implantation may be preferable for patients with a history of device infection, endocarditis, immunosuppression, limited vascular access, or high infection risk. Call for Further Research While the draft guidance supports leadless pacemakers for single-chamber pacing, NICE said that more evidence is needed before endorsing their wider use. This includes research on patient selection — such as age, comorbidities, and the underlying cause of bradyarrhythmia — as well as data on implantation sites and clinical outcomes. Long-term durability of leadless devices also remains an area for investigation. 'The incidence of bradyarrhythmias increases with age, making this guidance particularly relevant to our ageing population,' said Professor Tom Clutton-Brock, chair of NICE's interventional procedures advisory committee. The draft guidance is open for public consultation until 23 July 2025. The advisory committee will meet again on 11 September 2025 to review feedback and finalise recommendations.

This rare, aggressive type of cancerous brain tumor can cause headaches, seizures, and changes in behavior or cognitive (thinking) function. Treatment involves surgery combined with radiation and chemotherapy. Astrocytomas are a type of brain tumor. They develop in star-shaped brain cells called astrocytes, which form part of the tissue that protects the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. Astrocytomas are classified by their grade — grade 1 and 2 astrocytomas grow slowly, while grade 3 and 4 astrocytomas grow faster and more aggressively. An anaplastic astrocytoma is a grade 3 astrocytoma. While rare, this type of cancerous tumor can be very serious without treatment. Keep reading to learn more about anaplastic astrocytomas, including their symptoms and the survival rates of people who have them. What are the symptoms? The symptoms of an anaplastic astrocytoma can vary based on exactly where the tumor is, but generally include: headaches lethargy or drowsiness nausea or vomiting behavioral changes memory loss seizures vision problems coordination and balance problems What causes it? Researchers aren't sure what causes anaplastic astrocytomas. However, they may be associated with: genetic abnormalities immune system abnormalities environmental factors, such as exposure to UV rays and certain chemicals lifestyle factors, such as diet or stress People with certain genetic disorders, such as neurofibromatosis type I (NF1), Li-Fraumeni syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis, have a higher risk of developing anaplastic astrocytoma. Anaplastic astrocytomas are rare, so your doctor will start by discussing your medical history and performing a physical exam to identify any other possible causes of your symptoms. They may also use a neurological exam to see how your nervous system is working. This usually involves testing your balance, coordination, and reflexes. You may be asked to answer some basic questions so they can evaluate your speech and mental clarity. If your doctor thinks you may have a tumor, they'll likely use imaging such as an MRI scan or CT scan to examine a picture of your brain. If you do have an anaplastic astrocytoma, these images will also show its size and exact location. In some cases, doctors use a PET scan or SPECT scan. These metabolic scans look at cellular activity in the brain rather than the detailed anatomy seen on an MRI. These tests can sometimes be helpful for assessing tumor cells. A biopsy may also be part of the diagnostic process and can involve removing as much of the tumor as possible. How is it treated? There are several options for treating an anaplastic astrocytoma, depending on the size, location, and grade of the tumor. Surgery Surgery is usually the first step in treating an anaplastic astrocytoma. In some cases, your doctor may be able to remove all or as much of the tumor as possible. However, anaplastic astrocytomas may grow in areas of the brain that are not safe or accessible for surgery, so your doctor may only be able to safely remove part of the tumor. Tumor cells that remain because they were not identified or were surgically inaccessible can grow quickly after surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy If your tumor can't be removed with surgery or was only partially removed, you may need follow-up treatment. Radiation therapy destroys cells, especially rapidly dividing cancer cells. This will help shrink the tumor or destroy some or all of the cells that weren't removed during surgery. Anticancer drugs are referred to as chemotherapy and may be used with or after radiation therapy to continue treatment. Some people may also be treated with: epilepsy medication hydrocephalus treatment steroids physical therapy Survival rate and life expectancy According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year relative survival rate for people with an anaplastic astrocytoma is as follows: 58% for those ages 22 to 44 29% for those ages 45 to 54 15% for those ages 55 to 64 The relative survival rate suggests how long someone with a condition may live after their diagnosis compared to those without the condition of the same race, sex, and age over a specific time. This is different from the overall survival rate, which is a percentage of people still alive for a specific time after diagnosis of a condition. It's most important to remember that these figures are estimates, and everyone is different. You can talk with your doctor about your specific condition. Several factors can affect your survival rate, including: the size, location, and grade of your tumor whether the tumor was completely or partially removed with surgery whether the tumor is new or recurring your overall health Your doctor can give you a better idea of your outlook based on these factors.
