Soccer-Real edge Juventus to reach last eight as Mbappe starts Club World Cup
MIAMI (Reuters) -Real Madrid hit their stride at the Club World Cup on Tuesday, edging Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals thanks to a second-half strike from academy graduate Gonzalo Garcia as Kylian Mbappe made his tournament debut.
Garcia, deputising for Mbappe after the France forward missed the group stage due to gastroenteritis, found the back of the net early in the second half to set up a meeting with either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey.
Mbappe made his much-anticipated appearance as a second-half substitute, delighting the partisan crowd who packed Hard Rock Stadium to near capacity in a demonstration of the Spanish giants' considerable global appeal.
Juventus had early chances but gradually faded under the relentless pressing of Xabi Alonso's side and had goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio to thank for sparing them a heavier defeat.

Diego Simeone's side were eliminated despite a 1-0 victory over Brazil's Botafogo in their final Group B match on Monday, as they finished third in the so-called 'group of death', level on six points with Paris St-Germain and Botafogo but falling short on goal difference. The damage was largely inflicted in that opening 4-0 thrashing by PSG, a scoreline that would ultimately prove fatal to their ambitions in Fifa's revamped multi-million dollar showcase. Simeone's men arrived in the US with high hopes, boasting a squad that included Argentinian forward Julian Alvarez, former France captain Antoine Griezmann, and several other international names. However, their heavy loss to PSG and lacklustre performances overall raised further questions about the team's direction under their long-serving manager. Chelsea to sign Brighton forward Joao Pedro

(AFP pic) LONDON : Chelsea's forward options could be bolstered by the time they face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Friday after reportedly agreeing to a deal with Brighton for Joao Pedro. The Athletic reported the Brazilian international is on his way to the US for a medical before joining up with the Chelsea squad after terms were struck for a transfer in excess of £50 million (US$69 million). Pedro, who joined Brighton for a then club record £30 million from Watford two years ago, scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the Seagulls. However, the 23-year-old missed Brighton's final two matches of the season after being dropped due to a training ground altercation with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke. Fifa has given clubs involved in the Club World Cup knockout phase until July 3 to register new players for the tournament. Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens could also be a Chelsea player by then after a deal worth up to a reported 65 million euros (US$76 million) for the 20-year-old was agreed on Saturday. Chelsea have already signed striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr this summer.
