Ops Gasak: Seven LPG misuse cases uncovered in Terengganu
BANDAR PERMAISURI: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has uncovered seven cases involving the misappropriation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) since the launch of Ops Gasak on May 1, with total seizures amounting to RM68,065.07.
Terengganu Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry Director Mohd Mufsi Lat said the cases were uncovered following inspections at 164 premises statewide as of yesterday (May 17), with Dungun recording the highest number at four cases, while Kuala Terengganu, Hulu Terengganu and Besut each reported one case.
"However, the largest seizure took place in Hulu Terengganu, where two lorries and 477 subsidised LPG cylinders worth RM65,676.20 were confiscated in Ajil last Wednesday (May 14).
"A man in his 40s, believed to be the owner of the LPG cylinders, was also detained to assist in the investigation," he told reporters during the Firearms and Ammunition Training Exercise organised by Terengganu Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry at the police shooting range in Bukit Bidong Darat here on Sunday (May 18).
He said most of the cases involved abuse and misappropriation in the use of LPG under Regulation 3(1) and Regulation 13(1) of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974. - Bernama

Cops, JPJ on the ball over road violations

A total of 1,858 police personnel will be deployed to locations that are expected to experience traffic congestion on highways and federal, state and municipal roads, said Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT). The department was committed to ensuring the public can celebrate in a safe and peaceful environment,' its director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said in a statement yesterday, 'Road users are advised to stay informed on the latest traffic updates via JSPT's official social media channels, which will help them plan their travel effectively,' he said, according to Bernama. Mohd Yusri urged road users to comply with traffic regulations, reminding them not to queue jump, misuse emergency lanes and obstruct traffic flows. Op Lancar will end on Monday. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 Road Transport Department enforcement officers have also been deployed nationwide for an operation which focuses on motorcyclists failing to comply with regulations. JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said in Kota Baru that over the past two years, 1,132,140 notices were issued to motorcyclists, with 848,885 in 2024 and 283,255 as of May this year. He said the three main offences identified were not having a driving licence (301,774 cases), expired motor vehicle licence (251,886) and no insurance (233,819). Muhammad Kifli also said JPJ was offering a special flat rate compound of RM150 for three types of summonses, adding that the offer would end on June 30. The summonses covered are AwAS summonses (Summons 53A) issued from October 2018 onwards, Notice 114 (Interview Summons) issued in 2024 and earlier, and Notice 115/JPJ (P23) – Request for Driver Details – issued in 2024 and earlier. In Kuala Terengganu, JPJ issued 746 summonses for various offences over the first two days of the operation. Its director Zamri Samion said the summonses were issued following inspections on 6,006 vehicles, which included lorries, buses, motorcycles and cars. 'We also seized 25 vehicles including a lorry with serious technical issues involving its tyres,' Zamri said on Thursday night. 'We are targeting a 25% reduction in accidents and a 10% drop in fatalities during this operation,' he said, adding that the crackdown would end on Tuesday.

Student: It all unfolded so quickly
Tragic scene: The MPV which was rammed by the bus ferrying 42 UPSI students. — Bernama GERIK: It was meant to be a quiet overnight journey home after the festive break, but it turned into a hellish nightmare for a busload of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Among the shaken survivors was Nur Irdina Huri, 22, who vividly recalled the moment panic shattered the silence on the winding hills in Gerik. 'I was awake when it happened; it all unfolded so quickly. I managed to crawl out through a small opening, but I couldn't help my friends because it was too dark,' said the Early Childhood Education student, her voice trembling as she recalled the scene. Nur Irdina suffered a sprained leg and injuries to her waist. Just before the crash, she said, there were whispered fears, the smell of something burning and desperate prayers. She claimed the bus had been speeding and swerving erratically, and there was a strange burning smell while descending a hilly stretch. A total of 15 students were killed and 27 others injured in the tragedy. The accident happened between 12.30am and 1am yesterday when the chartered bus travelling from Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak, rammed the rear of a multipurpose vehicle (MPV). Fellow survivor Aleeya Maisarah Azizzani, 21, shared a similar account of panic and fear. She said the journey began at around 9pm in Jerteh, Terengganu, with the bus bound for Tanjung Malim, where UPSI is located. 'Some passengers mentioned a burning smell earlier on, but I only noticed it near Tanah Merah [Kelantan]. I assumed the driver would stop and check,' said Aleeya, who is pursuing a degree in Arabic Education. As the bus descended a hilly area near Jeli, Kelantan, she recalled it picking up speed and hitting a pothole, nearly swerving off to the right. 'I was sitting on the right side and started getting nervous. I recited prayers. The driver slowed down for a bit but suddenly sped up again,' she said. After that moment, Aleeya said she remained awake due to a growing sense of unease. The bus later took a sharp turn, veered left and slammed into a road divider. 'I didn't even know an MPV was involved since I was seated at the back. After the crash, I could only get myself out. My back was hurting badly and I could not help anyone else. 'Some of my friends were screaming. Others were trapped with injured legs. Some had already gone silent,' she said, breaking down in tears. Aleeya added that after she climbed out of the wreckage, she saw someone lying in a drain. 'At first, I thought the person was unconscious. But then I heard someone say that the head had cracked open,' she said. 'I used someone's phone to call my family, but it was 3am and no one picked up at first. Eventually, they answered.' Aleeya sustained a bump on her head, a sprained leg and back injuries. Her family later arrived to take her back to her hometown in Besut, Terengganu.
