Somernites May show will collect donations for tornado victims, first responders

Yahoo20-05-2025

Somernites Cruise Executive Director Keith Floyd will be the first to tell you it's the community that makes the classic and custom car show the success that is. This weekend is an opportunity for the Cruise to give back to the community.
The Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief Team is working with the Cruise at Saturday's show to help raise money to help those who have been impacted by last Friday's tornado that destroyed homes and businesses here in Somerset and resulted in one death in this county, with more in neighboring Laurel County.
Floyd said that people attending the May Cruise can stop by the Disaster Relief tent to give monetary donations as they're able. In addition to helping those affected by the storms, the money will also go to feed and take care of the first responders who have been working around the clock to help the community get back on its feet.
"We humbly ask that those who attend come prepared to give," read a post from Monday on the Cruise's Facebook page. "The Somernites Cruise Management Team will be making a donation as well to help this great organization who has helped so many. We also ask that you keep those impacted and those helping in your prayers."
Floyd praised the efforts of the first responders and volunteers, and everyone else who has pitched in to help the tornado victims recover in the event's aftermath.
"It's always tragic when something like this happens, but it always makes you proud when you see the community come together the way this community has," he said. "... It makes us proud to be Pulaski Countians, and that's one of the reasons we do what we do, to support the (community.)"
The cars may take a back seat in spirit to the fundraising efforts at this month's cruise, but they're still the highlight, and this May, Floyd said they're switching things up: Instead of the "Mopar Mania" showcase Cruise fans might expect, May will feature the "Camaro/Chevelle/Nova" showcase that was held in June last year.
"The Camaro of course is Chevrolet's answer to the (Ford) Mustang — that's truly what started the Pony Car wars," said Floyd. "... That rivalry between Ford and Chevrolet has been ... woven into the classic car culture, and we felt like they deserved their time to shine. We've incorporated the Chevlles and the Novas because they're all Chevrolet vehicles, and they all have their versions of the muscle cars and classic cars."
There will also be a special display this month of Pace cars — which are used to lead the pack during a car race to control speeds — most of which are replicas from the Indianapolis 500, said Floyd.
"They're always just a neat, unique collectible vehicle, and we've never highlighted them before," said Floyd. "We thought it would be a good time to do that."
One special display that's much more familiar to Cruisegoers will be the eighth-annual "Circle the Wagons" showcase of vintage station wagons as part of Saturday's show in downtown Somerset.
"That's always a crowd favorite," said Floyd. "... They just reek of nostalgia. Some of us grew up in the back of a station wagon."
The Cruise was originally scheduled to host for the second time the National Eastern Meet for the "First Generation Monte Club" but they cancelled this week because of lodging concerns following the tornado, noted Floyd. "We hate that but we understand their decision and respect that," he said.
If conditions permit, given its proximity to the area where the tornado hit and the lack of electricity in the vicinity, the Friday Night Thunder Block Party may still be held at the Somerset Mall from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, said Floyd; Cruise fans are advised to keep an eye out for updates on Somernites Cruise's social media pages. More certain to be held is the Burnside Meet & Greet on Friday morning, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cole Park.
The usual "Rattlesnake Run" on Ky. 192 won't take place this month because of road conditions following the tornado, but they may try a "Fun Run" from Cole Park at 2 p.m. Friday to Cumberland Falls. The regular Saturday "Fun Run" will not take place this month. Again, fans are advised to follow the Somernites Cruise Facebook page for updates.
The actual Somernites Cruise main showcase takes place Saturday in downtown Somerset from noon until 6 p.m. Drivers will then go to U.S. 27 to "cruise the strip" as far as possible, since part of the highway around where the tornado hit has been limited to traffic since Friday night.
Despite the challenging conditions, Somernites Cruise carries on. Floyd said he received a large number of calls, text messages and emails following the tornado wanting to know if the Cruise would still be going on this month and what they could do to help.
"They've all told me, almost to the person, how much they love Somerset and the community, and they want to help because they've had such a good time here, and people in Somerset have always made them feel welcome, and they want to give back," said Floyd. "That (says a lot) about our community, that people want to come do that for us."

'I Haven't Seen This Car Before:' Mechanic Works on Customer's Ford. Then He Takes a Closer Look at the Windshield Sticker

One mechanic is about to change the oil on his new customer's Ford when he takes a closer look at a sticker on the windshield. With nearly 20,000 miles between oil changes, is this Ford a ticking time bomb, or is it a simple case of a forgetful technician? TikTok user Rotor Lathe (@ posted his discovery on Thursday. In the video, he revealed a new customer who brought their car in for an oil change. "Oil change sticker says 12/19/23 at 16,000, roughly," he said. "And we've got 35,013 miles on this car. I can only imagine what this oil is going to look like." Clearly, Lathe intended the video as a sincere PSA, but the internet pointed out another possibility (as it always does). "Hear me out," wrote one viewer. "Could it be possible that the customer has had their oil changed but nobody put a sticker on it?" Someone else noted the cliffhanger with sarcasm. "I love the part where you show us the oil," they wrote. "They could have done [the oil change] themselves in between," suggested another person. "Just bought a '93 Blazer and the sticker says '08... Still has a few hundred miles to go," wrote someone else. How Many Oil Changes Did the Customer Miss? Let's take the sticker at face value and assume that the Ford's owner drove the car without an oil change for approximately 19,000 miles. If you accept AAA's general advice and change your oil every 3,000-5,000 miles, it means this car owner might've skipped out on three or four oil changes. How Bad Is This On the Car Maintenance Neglect Scale? According to the folks on this Reddit thread posted to r/cars three years ago, it's high up there. The original poster said they drove 17,000 miles in a 1986 Honda CRX Si. "Drove 45,000 miles a year 95 percent on the highway, so at least the miles were easy..." the Redditor wrote. In the comments, a user wrote, "There's a guy on the Civicx forum right now who went 20,000 miles on his tuned Si, without an oil change. His engine is [ruined] and he's getting cooked by the members lol." Someone else wrote, "25,000 miles. My fault, but only because I didn't know any better. I knew it needed maintenance, but didn't know anything about it. It wasn't until I got my first oil change and looked at the little sticker in the corner of the window that showed 'next change in 3,000 miles.' Oops." Motor1 reached out to Lathe via TikTok for comment. It reached out to Ford via email. They responded with sound advice. The Ford representative said, "Customers should read their owner's manual for information about maintenance intervals." The top 10 cars on the market that are the easiest to park in the UK

Car models from Ford, Kia, Volkswagen, Fiat and more have been named among the easiest to park with in the UK. While driving is something many motorists enjoy, the act of parking can be a bit more difficult and cause stress for some. It comes as research from Cazoo shows that Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) are the most nervous generation by far when it comes to parking. A survey of more than 2,000 motorists found that 96% within the age group faced 'park-xiety'. Parking can be a cause of stress for some motorists (Image: Getty Images) Additionally, around two-thirds (66%) say they have asked someone else to park their car for them, which is illegal if the person isn't insured on that car. With this in mind, Harry Waring, Motoring Specialist at Cazoo, has shared the 10 best cars currently on the market that are the easiest to park with. A classic first car for a reason, the Fiat 500's compact size, light steering and good all-around visibility make it ideal for slotting into spaces. The Ford Fiesta offers functions such as voice control, rear-view cameras and parking sensors available across a range of its models. Waring adds that it is "responsive and solid on the road and in the car park". All models of the Volkswagen Polo have a range of advanced safety features, such as automatic braking, that could help you avoid a collision when parking. Waring says: "A slightly more premium supermini, the Polo offers an easygoing driving experience with a focus on comfort rather than outright fun." The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is considered to be a good option thanks to being equipped with several parking assistance features. This includes standard reversing cameras, parking sensors, and even active parking assist systems that automatically steer the car into parking spaces. Waring adds: "It's relatively compact hatchback form also helps with manoeuvrability compared to larger vehicles, and second-hand examples are very affordable, despite the premium badge." The Hyundai i10 is an "excellent" car for the city and is a "dream to park" thanks to its small size, light steering and good all-around visibility. Some more expensive models even have rear parking sensors, a rare feature in a car of this size. The Kia Picanto takes the crown for one of the UK's least-expensive and best-value cars, and this approach carries through to parking. Waring adds: "Incredibly practical for urban driving, the Picanto's small size, light controls, and good visibility make it a breeze to park." The Suzuki Ignis has a high driving position, which provides good visibility for the driver, and the light steering helps to make parking straightforward. The Audi A3 is described as a "great practical option" that can be fitted with Park Assist. This helps the driver with both parallel and perpendicular parking. The Skoda Karoq is said to be a "fantastic all-rounder, mid-size SUV" which comes with rear parking sensors as standard. Chevy Has Quietly Discontinued the Rear-Drive Blazer EV

A new fleet order form shows that Chevrolet has quietly discontinued the rear-drive version of the Blazer EV. The rear-drive configuration was previously only available on the RS trim. For 2026, the Blazer EV RS will still be available in front- and all-wheel drive configurations. The Chevrolet Blazer EV lineup is a bit strange. For 2025, customers could choose from front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive—all on the same model. No more. A new order form on General Motors' fleet website shows that Chevy is killing the rear-drive version for 2026. Chevrolet During its one year of availability, the RWD Blazer EV was locked to the RS trim, which, confusingly, could also be ordered in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. For 2026, the RS trim will still have an option for powertrain configuration, but now it will be narrowed to a choice between FWD and AWD. While front-drive models come with a single 220-hp electric motor, rear-drive models featured a much more potent 365-hp motor for the rear axle. While we never got the chance to fully test a rear-drive Blazer EV RS during its one-model-year lifespan, we did get to drive one and found it to be downright lively. Apart from dropping the RWD version, the 2026 Blazer lineup gets a handful of visual changes, including a two-tone roof delete and a new Polar White Tricoat paint that replaces last year's Iridescent Pearl Tricoat option. There's also a new Tech Bronze package that adds 22-inch bronze wheels and a slew of black exterior decals. Car and Driver reached out to Chevy to confirm the configuration change, but has not heard back at the time of this article's posting. We will update this story when we hear back.
