Democratic Republic of Congo to pay Barcelona over €40 million for tourism promotion

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has entered into a sponsorship agreement worth over €40 million ($46.4 million) with Spanish football club FC Barcelona.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has agreed on a €40 million sponsorship deal with FC Barcelona to promote tourism.
The four-year campaign will showcase the slogan 'The Heart of Africa' on the team's training and warm-up jerseys.
The campaign involves additional branding in club publications and advertisements.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has entered into a sponsorship agreement worth over €40 million ($46.4 million) with Spanish football club FC Barcelona, aiming to promote the country as a tourist destination despite ongoing internal conflict.
The four-year deal, dated June 29, will see the slogan "The Heart of Africa" featured on the backs of FC Barcelona's men's and women's training and warm-up jerseys, according to a report by Reuters.
The DRC-branded logo will also appear in club advertisements, the annual report, and the club magazine.
A multimillion-euro gamble
The sponsorship, which has not yet been officially announced, will cost the Congolese government between €10 million and €11.5 million annually. It forms part of a broader strategy to rebrand the conflict-hit Central African nation as a hub for tourism and investment.
This deal follows similar, undisclosed agreements with European clubs AS Monaco and AC Milan. Congolese sports minister Didier Budimbu said the Monaco contract is worth €1.6 million per season, while a government source said the AC Milan deal is valued at €14 million annually.
In June, Tourism Minister Didier M'Pambia described the partnerships as a move to 'reposition the DRC on the international stage as an undisputed leader on the African continent.'
The deal has sparked discussion, given the DRC government's vocal criticism earlier this year of other African tourism campaigns.
In February, Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner called on Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain to sever ties with Rwanda's 'Visit Rwanda' sponsorships, which she described as 'blood-stained' amid rising regional tensions.

Brazil, Japan beef talks focus on smaller Brazilian states, upsetting industry

By Ana Mano and Marcela Ayres SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Ongoing talks to open the Japanese market to Brazilian beef are focusing on supplies from three small Brazilian exporting states, upsetting other parts of the South American country's industry that are eager to reach the high-paying customers, according to multiple sources. Brazil, the world's biggest beef exporter, has tried for two decades to crack the Japanese market without success. A deal would give Japan an alternative to its top suppliers, the United States and Australia, at a time when U.S. tariffs are reshaping global food trade. Negotiations gained momentum after a state visit of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in March to Japan, one of the world's largest beef importers. But the current state of talks, which focus on states representing less than 4% of Brazil's exports by volume, worries meatpackers in the big beef-producing states of Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Para. Together, they accounted for nearly 60% of Brazil's total beef exports, or 1.72 million metric tons last year. A Brazilian government memo, issued after a technical visit by Japanese officials in June, showed Brasília answered "a questionnaire for the import of beef from the southern part of the Republic Federation of Brazil," naming Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, and Santa Catarina. Those three small exporting states were declared free of foot-and-mouth, a contagious viral disease in cattle, earlier than the other states, although Brazil acquired in May the national status of being free of the disease without vaccination from the World Organization for Animal Health. Brazil's last outbreak of the disease was in 2006, according to the government. The Brazilian Agriculture Ministry did not have an immediate comment on its talks with Japan. A local government source, who asked not to be named, confirmed talks were taking place by region. The person said Brazil initially has no plans to negotiate permits beyond the three states. Beef sector representatives, including exporters, told Reuters they hope more states will be included. "We know talks are difficult," said Paulo Mustefaga, head of beef lobbying group Abrafrigo, which represents Marfrig and smaller beef exporters. "The surprise for us is that this is now moving towards approval for only three states." Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said it was aware of Brazil's status of being free of foot-and-mouth disease. It added that Japan is "conducting a risk assessment in accordance with Japanese procedures" ahead of issuing any export permits to Brazilian meatpackers, without elaborating. Tottenham Hotspur Set Their Sights On This Barcelona Midfielder: Should Frank Bring Him On Board?

In a recent report, AS revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado this summer. It has been stated that Spurs could move in for the Spanish talent if the Catalan club makes him available in this transfer window. The 21-year-old was a good squad player for Barca last season when he produced a string of impressive displays for them in La Liga. Casado scored once and picked up six assists in 36 matches for the Catalan outfit in the previous campaign across all fronts. The Spanish sensation anchored the midfield well as he made 44 tackles, 20 blocks and 22 interceptions in La Liga. He was careful when distributing the ball from midfield after making 89.3% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top flight (stats via His current contract at the Nou Camp will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, it won't be easy for Tottenham to sign him on the cheap this off-season. (Photo by) Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Bring Casado On Board? Casado is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn't mind putting his foot through the ball when required and is an accurate passer from midfield. The Spanish talent can chip in by picking up his fair share of assists. However, he needs to add more goals to his game if he wants to be a consistent performer at the highest level. Casado is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Still, we can expect him to inject more quality into Tottenham boss Thomas Frank's midfield. At 21, Casado has the potential to be a future star in the Premier League. Hence, it makes sense for the North London club to try everything they can to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.

Indian components found in Russian drones used for Putin's war, Ukraine claims

Indian-made components have been discovered in Russian drones used for deadly attacks on Ukraine, one of President Volodymyr Zelensky's top officials has claimed. The Iranian-made Shahed drones containing Indian parts have been involved in attacks along the frontlines and against civilians, Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram. He called on the world to 'deprive Russians of the ability to receive components from other countries and stop the killing of Ukrainians,' according to Kyiv-based Ukrainian news agency UNN. 'Also, buying Russian energy resources is financing the war, which does not contribute to peace,' Yermak added. 3 Indian-made components have reportedly been found in Russian drones used for the war on Ukraine. REUTERS The White House and National Security Council didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post. The drone development comes as President Trump has threatened to slap new tariffs on India if it does not stop purchasing Russian oil. 3 Vladimir Putin has relied on relatively inexpensive Shahed drones for his war in Ukraine. via REUTERS 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday. Trump added on Friday that he was also seeking to impose new sanctions on Russia and any country that purchases its energy exports like crude oil and electricity. India, as the third-biggest oil importer and consumer in the world, has a high demand and draws one-third of its supply from Russia. A source from the Indian government noted that its purchases have helped balance global oil prices by easing the pressure on supplies from other regions. 3 More than 6,000 Shahed-style drones were launched at Ukraine last month alone. AP The relatively inexpensive Shahed drones that included the Indian-made components have become a crucial part of Vladimir Putin's war on Ukraine since late 2022. Iran initially supplied 2,000 fully assembled drones to Russia, which soon established its own assembly system using Iranian ready-made components, according to Ukraine's Security Service. That number was quickly escalated, with more than 6,000 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia last month alone, according to figures from the Ukrainian air force. With Post wires
