Can India bounce back in England after Lord's heartbreak? Key tactical tweaks

Can India bounce back in England after Lord's heartbreak? Key tactical tweaks

India Today6 days ago
The ongoing Test series between India and England has offered a riveting contest marked by momentum shifts, tactical battles, and standout individual performances. England drew first blood with victories at Headingley and Lord's, while India responded with a dominant win in Edgbaston. As the series enters its decisive phase, India faces the challenge of overturning a deficit and claiming their first Test series win in England since 2007. While the Shubman Gill-led side has shown flashes of brilliance, it has also struggled with consistency - a gap that must be bridged if India hopes to finish on top.advertisementA MISSED OPPORTUNITY AT LORD'SDespite the result, India were competitive for large parts of the Lord's Test. The bowlers restricted England to 387 in the first innings, and the batters matched that total with grit and patience. In England's second innings, India's bowlers again delivered, dismissing the hosts for 192 and setting up a gettable target of 193.However, the chase unraveled. India's approach was tentative, and wickets fell at regular intervals. The team's inability to build partnerships in the fourth innings left Ravindra Jadeja with little support. India eventually fell short by 22 runs - a narrow defeat that could prove costly in the larger context of the series.
Key batters such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant failed to capitalise on promising starts. In situations like these, partnerships and composed decision-making are essential. The margin for error is small, and India couldn't afford the lapses that crept in at critical junctures.AREAS THAT REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ATTENTIONBATTING: BLENDING PATIENCE WITH PURPOSEIndia's batters will need to find a method to navigate England's pace attack, particularly in seaming and swinging conditions. The likes of Jofra Archer have tested India's technique and temperament. Players such as Rahul, Pant, Jadeja, and the promising Nitish Reddy must adapt quickly, leaving deliveries outside off-stump, rotating strike consistently, and building resilient partnerships. India's best batting moments have come when players combined caution with positive intent - a balance that must be struck again in the final two matches.BOWLING: SUSTAINED PRESSURE IS THE KEYIndia's bowlers have largely performed with heart and discipline. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Jadeja have all struck at crucial moments, while Akashdeep and Arshdeep Singh have shown promise. But to win a Test in England, a team must take 20 wickets - and do so by maintaining pressure across all four innings. With swing-friendly conditions, accuracy and consistency become non-negotiable. India's bowlers have the skillset, but execution in pressure situations will be critical.LEADERSHIP UNDER SCRUTINY, BUT GILL HOLDS STEADYShubman Gill, captaining in England for the first time, has impressed with his calm approach and personal form. He is the leading run-scorer in the series so far, with 600 runs and three centuries to his name. Still, leadership in Test cricket is about more than personal milestones. It involves tactical adaptability, smart field placements, timely bowling changes, and rallying the team when momentum dips. The upcoming Tests will test Gill's leadership mettle more than any before.advertisementBUMRAH'S AVAILABILITY COULD DECIDE THE SERIESJasprit Bumrah remains the linchpin of India's bowling attack. His unique ability to extract bounce and movement, even on unresponsive surfaces, makes him a rare asset. Former players and experts have underlined the importance of a fully fit Bumrah - particularly in conditions where opposition batters like Joe Root and Ben Stokes thrive. While Siraj and Jadeja have played supporting roles effectively, Bumrah's availability and workload management could significantly impact India's prospects in Manchester and The Oval.NO. 3 REMAINS AN UNSOLVED PUZZLEIndia's No. 3 position continues to be a concern. Karun Nair, brought back into the squad for this series, has managed just 131 runs at an average of 21.8. While he is still readjusting to Test cricket, India may consider bringing in someone like Sai Sudharsan to lend stability to the top order. A reliable No. 3 is crucial in England, where early wickets often define the tone of an innings. Whether the management sticks with Nair or opts for a change could be a decisive call.advertisementCATCHING CONCERNS PERSISTIndia's slip catching has been below expected standards throughout the series. Several key chances have gone down, often due to poor positioning or lack of anticipation. In English conditions - where edges are frequent - reliable catching behind the stumps is critical. The fielding unit, including the cordon and close-in fielders, must raise their game to support the bowlers in turning half-chances into wickets.WHAT INDIA SHOULD CONSIDERManage Bumrah's workload smartly and rotate pacers to maintain effectiveness.Reassess the No. 3 spot - a solid batter like Sudharsan may offer the stability Nair has not.Address fielding lapses, especially in the slips, with specific drills and sharper positioning.Ensure players have role clarity and are mentally prepared for high-pressure situations.INJURIES AND UNCERTAINTYIndia's squad is dealing with multiple injury concerns ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester. Nitish Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Akashdeep, and Rishabh Pant are all nursing niggles. Uncapped pacer Anshul Kamboj has been drafted into the squad as a precautionary move. Akashdeep's groin issue is not considered serious, but with little turnaround time between Tests, India must tread carefully. Pant's situation is more pressing - his injury to the left index finger ruled him out of the latter stages of the previous Test, and his absence leaves a significant void in both batting and wicketkeeping.advertisementCAN PANT RETURN IN TIME?Rishabh Pant's potential return could be a game-changer. His ability to counterattack and shift pressure makes him invaluable, particularly in fourth-innings scenarios. His keeping has also been reliable in challenging conditions. If fit, Pant is expected to walk back into the XI. India will be hoping for positive news on that front before the Manchester Test.- EndsYou May Also Like

Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Ben Stokes And Co For 'Sarcastic' Act: "Not Being Mature..."

The fourth India vs England Test was not away from controversy. A huge debatable moment occured when England captain Ben Stokes offered for a draw with 15 overs left in the Manchester Test but India declined it with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar both batting in their eighties. The visitors waited for both the batters to smash their respective centuries before the match could be ended early. Since, England didn't want to bowl the final 15 overs, their players didn't acknowledge the achievements of Jadeja and Sundar when the players touched the three-figure mark. The attitude of England players disappointed Gavaskar, who blasted the side. "A majority of the England players not to be clapping when their hundreds were achieved doesn't really reflect well because they have to acknowledge the 80 plus that both of them scored. I know in modern day cricket, those kind of things are looked down upon as not being manly enough or not being mature enough to acknowledge another sportsperson's superiority. I can understand if Ben Stokes or Joe Root were little sarcastic about it but none of the others in this England team have scored enough hundreds to be sarcastic about the other batters looking to get their hundreds," said Gavaskar on Sony Sports. Drama unfolded in the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Sunday after Indian batters Jadeja and Sundar refused England skipper Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the start of the final hour of play. There is a provision that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible. Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, flatly refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match for India who started their second innings 311 runs in arrears, Jadeja and Washington exercised their rights to continue batting. India coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill backed the decision to carry on batting.

Washington Sundar's father hits out at selectors: 'One failure and he's dropped'

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - JULY 27: India batsman Washington Sundar celebrates his century during day five of the 4th Test Match between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford on July 27, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by) All-rounder Washington Sundar has drawn a lot of praise after helping Team India pull off a crucial draw in the fourth Test against England, stitching an unbeaten 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja on Day 5 at the Old Trafford. Sundar registered his maiden century in international cricket, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 206 balls in a knock comprising nine fours and a six. The Tamil Nadu cricketer's father M Sundar expressed his happiness following his son's match saving but also expressed concerns over people forgetting his performances. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances," said the cricketer's father M Sundar in an exclusive interaction with Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai "My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Undo He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now," he added. Washington father further highlighted Washington's performances during the 2017/18 Nidahas Trophy, where he was named the Player of the Series, helping India lift the trophy. Poll Should Washington Sundar be given more consistent opportunities to play for the national team? Yes, absolutely No, he needs to earn it Maybe, depending on future performances "My son was very economical despite it being his first overseas tour. He was dropped for 11 straight matches by RCB in the next edition of the IPL, despite his quality performances. Can you imagine his mentality? Washington scored a 14-ball 40 in his first match for SRH during the IPL 2022 season. He was sent at number six in the next match," he said. "Even his current team (GT) don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls. Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket," added Sundar's father. After terror attacks, India vs Pakistan at Asia Cup to go ahead—can govt step in? Not yet

The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is gearing up for another high-voltage installment at next month's Asia Cup, but the announcement of the clash has already triggered public outcry. The key question floating around: can the Indian sports ministry step in to stop the match? Not at the moment. The massacre briefly brought India and Pakistan to the brink of a military confrontation. Now, just a few months later, the two cricketing nations are scheduled to face each other in a tournament led by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi. Despite the strong emotions, the sports ministry has no jurisdiction over the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as things stand. 'As of now, the BCCI does not come under the purview of the sports ministry as the National Sports Governance Bill is still to be passed. So, the ministry doesn't have a say, but we will wait and see how the BCCI responds to public sentiment,' a ministry official told PTI. Live Events Former defence intelligence chief Lt Gen (Retd) KJS Dhillon is among those urging a boycott of all sporting ties with Pakistan. But Sourav Ganguly, ex-BCCI president and Indian captain, while condemning terrorism, has pushed for sport to continue uninterrupted. 'Sport should go on,' he said. The sports ministry has made its position clear: bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan are off the table. But multilateral events like the Asia Cup are governed by international charters. India, eyeing a bid for the 2036 Olympics, is especially mindful of the Olympic Charter, which bars political discrimination. That's why Pakistan was allowed to send athletes for events held in India, and why India is unlikely to block their participation in return. Cricket is now part of the Olympic fold and is set to debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. However, the Asia Cup is not governed by the ICC. It's a property of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), currently headed by the PCB. This year's tournament has a marquee India-Pakistan clash lined up for September 14, with two more potential face-offs if both sides progress. Broadcasters are betting big on these matches—and not without reason. Sony Network paid a hefty USD 170 million for an eight-year broadcast deal with the ACC. If India and Pakistan don't square off, those viewership numbers and ad revenues could take a serious hit. That, in turn, could impact ACC's earnings—and by extension, the funding of its 24 member boards, many of whom rely on these revenues for development. BCCI's own coffers may be large enough to absorb the blow, but smaller nations would feel the pinch. So what about the new sports bill? The National Sports Governance Bill, introduced in Parliament just last week, contains a clause that could, in theory, give the sports ministry the power to step in. It allows the government to 'impose reasonable restrictions' on Indian teams' international participation when 'necessitated by extraordinary circumstances' and 'in the national interest.' But the bill is still working its way through Parliament. It hasn't been passed by both Houses, nor received the President's assent. Until that happens, it doesn't have the force of law. And until then, the BCCI remains autonomous. 'The scenario changes when that happens. But as of now, it is status quo. It is the BCCI's call,' the ministry source said. India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral series since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. But they've regularly clashed in multi-nation tournaments like the World Cup and Champions Trophy, events that draw millions of viewers and advertisers alike.
