MCMC seizes TikTok user's phone over false PM Anwar content
According to an MCMC statement, the content was uploaded in response to issues concerning an 'immoral party' in Malaysia and the Prime Minister's official statement on public incentives.
The commission added, 'In another post, the individual is also suspected of making false and highly offensive allegations regarding the Prime Minister's official visit abroad.'
The suspect's statement was recorded yesterday at MCMC's Cyberjaya headquarters as part of the investigation.
The case falls under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, two years' imprisonment, or both.
MCMC warned that it will not tolerate social media misuse to spread harmful content, stating, 'The commission reiterated that it will not compromise on any misuse of social media platforms to spread offensive content or unfounded allegations and will continue to take firm action to safeguard public order and national harmony.' - Bernama

MCMC drafts online safety rules for social media, ad verification required
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is drafting subsidiary legislation under the Online Safety Act 2024, including an online safety code that will outline mandatory risk reduction measures for social media platforms. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said among the key areas being considered is the requirement for social media platforms to verify the identity of advertisers, in line with practices adopted in countries such as Singapore and Taiwan. "In Singapore, advertisers are now required to verify their identities before placing ads on social media platforms. In Taiwan, platforms must disclose who paid for and created the ad. "We are studying these measures and, if found effective, they will be included in the upcoming online safety code," she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Teo was responding to a supplementary question from Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) on whether the government plans to amend existing laws to make it mandatory for social media platforms to filter advertisements and be held accountable for victims' losses. She said the urgent need for tighter regulation stems from the growing number of scam advertisements on social media, including those impersonating high-profile Malaysians. To date, MCMC has received 121 reports of scam ads impersonating well-known individuals, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Pahang, the Sultan of Selangor, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz. "MCMC has also submitted 121 requests to Meta regarding advertisements impersonating high-profile individuals," she added. Teo said she herself has been a victim of scam advertisements. "Recently, Facebook ads falsely claimed that I am giving away 2,000 copies of the book Rich Dad Poor Dad for free. "I asked MCMC to report this to Meta, yet the ads continue to appear. Even after MCMC issued notices identifying the advertisements as scams, Meta continued to allow scammers to publish second, third and even sixth versions of the same ad," she said. Meanwhile, she said social media platforms removed 46,817 scam-related content pieces from January to July 15 this year, following requests by MCMC. The takedowns were based on public complaints and each platform's community guidelines, in line with local laws. "The number of scam content removals has seen a sharp year-on-year increase. In 2022, only 242 scam items were taken down. This rose significantly to 6,297 in 2023, and then surged to 63,652 last year."

Debt dispute behind viral Puchong kidnapping, one arrested
SUBANG JAYA: Police have arrested a local man suspected of involvement in the abduction of another man during a roadside altercation along Persiaran Puchong Permai yesterday evening. The arrest followed a tip-off from a member of the public who witnessed a group of men forcing the victim into a lorry in Puchong at about 6.38pm, said Subang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat. "Initial investigations revealed that the 32-year-old suspect arrested and his three accomplices, who are still at large, were involved in the incident that has since gone viral. "The victim, however, was also found with the suspect at the time of the arrest," Wan Azlan said in a statement today. He said the motive of the alleged abduction is believed to be linked to a debt dispute. Wan Azlan said the suspect was arrested at 10pm in the SS19 area. He said checks on the suspect showed he had two past criminal records. "Based on the tattoos on the suspect, we have strong reasons to believe that he is also a member of a secret society gang. He has been remanded for four days from July 23 to assist investigations," he said. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping with intent to confine, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine. It is also being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, and under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966, which provides for a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction. Yesterday, it was reported that a video of the incident had been captured and was making its rounds on social media platforms. Wan Azlan said police were tracking down the suspects involved in the alleged abduction and the circumstances surrounding the incident. "We are still looking for the remaining suspects who were seen in the recording," he said. Wan Azlan assured that all information provided and the identity of the informant would be kept confidential.
