Alabama must get big season from this player to return to College Football Playoff: expert
Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer is hoping for a better Year 2 than his debut season in Tuscaloosa.
Not that Alabama couldn't have done far worse than a 9-3 regular season that included a thrilling win over Georgia, a blowout victory at LSU, and a fifth straight Iron Bowl win over Auburn. Those and six other victories aren't bad for any new coach to have on his résumé.
But it's still Alabama, where high expectations will always be part of the job for any coach (historically, some have understood this better than others). For DeBoer to improve on last year's mark, a trip to the 12-team College Football Playoff is a must.
On Thursday, CBS Sports looked at the biggest X-factors for 12 prime College Football Playoff hopefuls. In Alabama's case, analyst Carter Bahns highlighted linebacker Qua Russaw as the player he views as poised to "make or break" the Tide's playoff hopes in 2025.
Per Bahns:
"The Alabama defense lost some of its identity last season as the pass rushing scheme lacked explosiveness and did not feature the superstar-caliber edge rushers that were cornerstones of the roster under Nick Saban. Someone needs to take a step forward in 2025 for the Crimson Tide to be more than just a mid-tier defensive front. Enter Qua Russaw, who cut his teeth as a redshirt freshman and should be the top option at the "wolf" position in Year 3. He managed just one sack a year ago, and Alabama needs more from the former No. 64 overall recruit."
Russaw committed to Nick Saban as a five-star player from Montgomery's Carver High School in 2022. As a redshirt freshman a season ago, he played in 13 games and made six starts while totaling 36 tackles (2.5 for loss) to go with two interceptions.
DeBoer has a talented roster heading into 2025, and it's apparent everywhere you look. PFF (Pro Football Focus) ranked the Tide's offensive line as the best in the nation, while the secondary was ranked No. 2 behind Texas. The wide receivers room, led by sophomore Ryan Williams and senior Germie Bernard, was recently ranked by CBS Sports as the third-best unit.
That talent will have to carry Alabama back to the College Football Playoff for the season to be considered a success.
Alabama opens the 2025 season against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC.

Alabama Commit Continues Strong Elite 11 Performance on Thursday
Alabama Commit Continues Strong Elite 11 Performance on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Recent Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback commit Jett Thomalla could be the steal of the 2026 recruiting class. Advertisement Thomalla joined many of the top prep arms in the country at this week's Elite 11 Finals, and the early results have been promising. Millard South quarterback Jett Thomalla (4)Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK During the mid-week portion of the activities, Thomalla tossed 18 of his 20 passes in a catchable radius while earning high praise from onlookers. On3 Recruits deemed Thomalla a top ten performer, while others had him slip into the top five. Any doubters of Thomalla are likely to change their tune about his continued performance on Thursday. Thomalla shined during 7on7 drills, going 14-of-21 with four touchdowns and an interception. For reference, Washington Huskies commit Derek Zammit also tossed four touchdowns, but it came on 24 pass attempts, with two resulting in interceptions. Worth noting, Briggs Cherry (Louisville Cardinals), Jonas Williams (USC Trojans), Travis Burgess (North Carolina Tar Heels), Helaman Casuga (Texas A&M Aggies), and Troy Huhn (Penn State Nittany Lions) all tossed five or more touchdowns. Advertisement Thomalla's performance at the Elite 11 competition has become a topic of discussion among Alabama fans following his recent commitment to the SEC powerhouse. The four-star passer in the class of 2026 made headlines this week after decommitting from the Iowa State Cyclones and pivoting to Alabama. The hard commitment from Thomalla comes with superstar five-star Keelon Russell joining Alabama this fall. He will compete with former blue-chip prospect Ty Simpson. Meanwhile, Thomalla dominated at Millard South High School in Omaha, Nebraska, last season, accumulating 3,664 passing yards, 47 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Big Change Coming for the College Football Playoff
Big Change Coming for the College Football Playoff originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Beginning next season, the College Football Playoff will require teams to issue player availability reports for all games. Advertisement According to Brett McMurphy of and a report CBS Sports, CFP executive director Rich Clark announced the change Wednesday. The Big Ten and SEC have put similar programs in place over the last few years, but the CFP did not share whether their system would follow either of the existing ones. This comes at a time when the widespread legalization of sports gambling is starting to fundamentally alter the landscape of all sports, whether professional or collegiate. Adding the injury reporting requirement brings a level of transparency, making it more difficult for anyone to profit from what was previously exclusive information. The Big Ten's partnership with U.S. Integrity was aimed at these precise issues. Advertisement 'The well-being of our students, coaches, and staff, as well as the integrity of our competitions are of paramount importance,' Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said of the 2023 partnership. 'Enhanced transparency through availability reporting and partnering with U.S. Integrity strengthens our efforts to protect those who participate in our games as well as the integrity of the games themselves. I'm grateful for the collaboration of our schools, coaches, and administrators.' It seems likely that it is only a matter of time before similar measures are enacted throughout the NCAA. Arizona State Football Preview 2025: Who's Having More Fun Than Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils?
Everything about Arizona State last year was back Cam Skattebo was fun. Quarterback Sam Leavitt was fun. Winning the Big 12 Championship was fun, and almost pulling out a thriller over Texas in the College Football Playoff was super-fun, even in a no one had more fun than head coach Kenny Dillingham, with an infectious excitement and style that showed in every play in every game. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN Arizona State Offense BreakdownArizona State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season Skattebo might be a New York Giant, but now that the Sun Devils are the hunted, the good times aren't going to Big 12 is much better from top to bottom, being the hunted won't be easy, and there will likely be more than the two regular season losses the team suffered last year. And none of that should be a problem, because this team won't quit. Arizona State started 2-7 in Dillingham's first season in 2023, but there was still intensity and toughness over the final three weeks, even when they were way overmatched in blowout losses to Oregon and Arizona over the last two all carried over into 2024, and now is when it's on Dillingham to keep the party going. He's just 35, and Arizona State is his school - this isn't just some job for him - and it should once again show after proving that his style year's team is among the most experienced in the country, and it still landed a few icing-on-cake transfers to come in to help patch what few holes there team, fun coach, and all at one of the most fun schools in the country. Arizona State is on the national radar now as a must-watch team every it all going with another strong season, and 2024 should be just the beginning.
