Lebanon's Aoun tells top Iranian official: only state holds arms, no outside interference
During a meeting in Beirut with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's top security body, Aoun warned against foreign interference in Lebanon's internal affairs, saying the country was open to cooperation with Iran but only within the bounds of national sovereignty and mutual respect.
"The friendship we seek with Iran must be with all Lebanese, not through one sect or component alone," Aoun said, according to a statement from his office.
He added that recent language used by some Iranian officials had not been helpful, and reaffirmed that the Lebanese state and its armed forces were solely responsible for safeguarding all citizens.

The country's civilian and military leaders issued messages on the 78th Independence Day emphasising strong national defence and sovereignty. "While expressing our resolve to protect Pakistan's sovereignty, we as a peaceful nation, reiterate our belief in the principles of peaceful coexistence and resolving the regional and global issues through dialogue and diplomacy," Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a message. He said Pakistan is determined to mobilise all available resources to meet the emerging economic, industrial, and technological challenges. "Like military prowess, a strong and stable economy is also inevitable for an impregnable national defence and sovereignty, for which we all need to demonstrate the spirit of Marka-e-Haq and the Pakistan Movement," he said. Marka-e-Haq or the Battle of Truth referred to the brief military conflict with India in May. Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called for further efforts to make the country more secure and prosperous. "Freedom is not merely inherited, it is earned and preserved through responsibility, discipline, and unity," he said. Putin suggests Russia and U.S. could make a deal on nuclear arms control

Speaking at a Kremlin meeting with Russia's most senior military and civilian officials, Putin said that he was informing them of the state of play in negotiations on Ukraine with the United States, and bilateral talks with Kyiv. "I would like to tell you about the stage we are at with the current American administration, which, as everyone knows, is making, in my opinion, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the fighting, end the crisis, and reach agreements of interest to all parties involved in this conflict," Putin said. Putin said the discussions with the United States were aimed at creating "the long–term conditions of peace between our countries, in Europe, and in the world as a whole, if we reach agreements in the field of strategic offensive arms control in the next stages." Putin is due to hold a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday. Russia and the United States have by far the biggest arsenals of nuclear weapons in the world. The last remaining pillar of nuclear arms control between the two countries is the New Strategic Arms Reduction (New START) treaty, which is due to expire on February 5, 2026.
