Guardiola hints at summer exit for Grealish after Club World Cup omission
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that Jack Grealish may need to consider leaving the club in the summer to secure more regular playing time, after the England international was omitted from the squad travelling to the United States for the revamped Fifa Club World Cup.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder, signed from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, started just seven Premier League matches during the 2024-25 campaign. Speaking ahead of City's Group G opener against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Guardiola admitted that Grealish's future remains uncertain.
'We had a conversation between him and the club and decided it was best for him not to travel to the Club World Cup,' Guardiola told reporters in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason he didn't play last season was, of course, my decisions. Now, we've decided he needs to play. The club was honest, and he was honest.'
Guardiola emphasised Grealish's importance to the squad during City's treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, as well as his influence during his time at Aston Villa. However, he acknowledged that the past two seasons have seen the player struggle for consistency.
'He has incredible respect and love for the team,' Guardiola said. 'We decided it's best for him to stay in Manchester, find a place where he can feel like playing again, and rediscover the form he showed in the year of the treble or during his time at Villa. The fact is, over the last two seasons, he hasn't played enough, and he needs to get back to playing regularly, feeling that excitement of competing every three days.'
While Guardiola left the door open for Grealish to remain at the Etihad Stadium, he admitted that both the player and the club will use their time apart during the Club World Cup to reflect on his future.
'I don't know if his future will be in Manchester,' he said. 'We'll be away now, and we'll see what happens. For now, he's a Manchester City player, and if he has to come back, he will.'

Manchester City ease to victory over Wydad in Club World Cup opener
Manchester City eased to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wydad in their opening game of the Fifa Club World Cup on Wednesday. Goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku at the beginning and end of the first half earned Pep Guardiola's side victory at a baking hot Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Summer signings Tijjani Reijnders and Ryan Chekri were both handed debuts after their respective summer moves from AC Milan and Lyon, while there was also a welcome return from injury for Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder Rodri. The only downside for City was the late sending off for Rico Lewis who was shown a straight red card after catching Samuel Obeng in the face in his follow through after sliding in for a tackle. But Lewis's exit came with two minutes to go and with City in cruise control, on the way to a win that took them top of Group G, which also contains UAE side Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus who face-off in Washington DC (Thursday at 5am UAE time). 'Very happy for the team to start the tournament with a win. It was difficult at times with the heat,' said player-of-the-match Foden. 'Fair play to them, they were a top team on the counter-attacks. A lot of chances that we had to deal with. Happy with the performance and happy with the three points. 'I stayed alive, and the ball fell to me. I put it away nicely, so I am happy. A new season, fresh me. Looking forward to the season now.' City were playing their first game since a surprise FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace which meant they finished the season trophyless. And that came on the back of a disappointing Premier League campaign which saw them finish third, a distant 13 points behind champions Liverpool. But City began their Club World Cup defence in style as they took the lead inside two minutes of action, scoring the tournament's quickest ever goal. A surging run down the right by Savinho ended with the Brazilian winger sending over a cross that Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid could only parry straight to the feet of Foden who finished first time into the corner. It was a welcome goal for the England international – his first in 20 matches for club and country – after a tough season where he failed to hit the heights of previous campaigns. January signing Omar Marmoush almost made it 2-0 before the 10-minute mark but the Egyptian attacker pulled his shot just wide of the target while defender Nathan Ake headed another chance just wide from a corner. But it was not all one-way traffic with the 2021/22 CAF Champions League winners making life difficult at times for City, with Thembinkosi Lorch a lively figure for WAC. The South African attacker attempted one audacious strike from inside his own half that had Ederson in the City goal back-pedalling furiously before stopping the ball just before the goalline. Pep Guardiola admitted Jack Grealish's Manchester City future remains unclear following the decision to leave him out of his squad for the Club World Cup. What happens, I don't know, but if he doesn't [leave] he is a player for Man City and he will be back.' Guardiola denied this meant he felt Grealish no longer has a hunger for the game, but said he failed to compete with his teammates and did not deserve to be picked. He said: 'The reason he didn't play is my decisions. Football is competing with each other – not just Jack, all of them. 'They compete [for] who deserves to play. The butterflies are an example of the tension and they happen for all the players. 'Over the last two years he didn't play much and I take responsibility for that, but he has to play and we reflected that it was better not to come here.' Another player not involved in the US is England right-back Kyle Walker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan and appears set to leave the club. The 35-year-old has been linked with Everton but Guardiola was unwilling to discuss the matter. He said: 'I don't have any news. It's the same case for Jack. About the links with other teams, you have to ask [director of football] Hugo [Viana].' WAC will 'make it hard' for City Wydad coach Amine Benhachem has promised that his team will compete with Manchester City in their opening game at the Club World Cup despite being rank outsiders. "It is going to be a difficult match, let's not kid ourselves - Manchester City, enough said," Benhachem said on the eve of the game. "This is going to be hard, but we have our chances. We have our way of playing and we can at least compete." Wydad are one of the giants of North African football and qualified for Fifa's new competition as a recent winner of the CAF Champions League. However, they had a disappointing season in Morocco, finishing third in their domestic league. That performance led to them parting company with South Africa-born coach Rulani Mokwena, with Benhachem replacing him in the dugout. "We want to make it hard for them.
