Economy Ministry duties to be temporarily assigned to a minister, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: A minister will be chosen to temporarily take on the responsibilities of the Economy Ministry, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said this when asked on the fate of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli who is to officially resign as Economy Minister on Tuesday (June 17).
"I think that there is no need for any reshuffle at the moment and I wish Rafizi all the best.
"He had served very well as the Economy Minister.
"I will now have to decide which minister will carry out the responsibilities," he said when met by reporters after launching Energy Asia 2025 here on Monday (June 16).
In a Facebook post last Friday (June 13), Rafizi clocked out as Economy Minister after going to his office to settle some work and pack his things.
On May 28, Rafizi confirmed that he would be going on leave till June 16 and had submitted his resignation letter, effective June 17, to Anwar.
On May 7, Rafizi said he would be ready to step down from his party and Cabinet posts if he lost the deputy president post in the PKR polls.
The Pandan MP said he would return to be a grassroots level leader and campaign intensively for the party.
Rafizi was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar for the PKR deputy president's post in the party polls.
Meanwhile, when asked if this meant that he had accepted Rafizi's resignation, Anwar merely responded by saying the date had yet to expire.
"Give some space, why ask me if I have accepted.
"He is still on leave and the day hasn't arrived yet," he said.
On the fate of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Anwar said that no decision has been made yet.
"I will always wait and give chance. I had given my views that if can, he should continue (as minister)," he said.
Nik Nazmi had also submitted his resignation effective July 1 after failing to defend his vice-president post in the recent PKR polls.

Anwar: TNB earmarks RM43bil to upgrade national grid with AI, battery storage systems
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - Photo: Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd has committed RM43 billion to upgrade the national grid infrastructure, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that the upgrade will incorporate artificial intelligence and battery energy storage systems to build greater resilience and flexibility for the future. "We must invest in improving efficiency and reducing emissions within our existing energy systems, a formidable task, given that fossil fuels still account for nearly 80 per cent of global supply. "Most importantly, this transition must be anchored in equity,' the prime minister said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 conference today. Anwar also issued a reminder that decarbonisation efforts that ignore the needs of the poor and vulnerable risk deepening inequality. Touching on ASEAN, he highlighted that the bloc has already laid the groundwork for this pragmatic pathway through the ASEAN Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment Framework and Roadmap, which aims to streamline policies and facilitate the flow of capital and carbon across borders. "Malaysia is doing its part. Earlier this year, we passed the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025 to provide a regulatory foundation for this emerging sector. "Petronas is leading the charge with plans to develop three CCS hubs in our offshore waters, serving not just the oil and gas sector but also other hard-to-abate industries,' he said. Anwar added that Malaysia's CCS efforts involve more than 10 international partners, including Japan, South Korea, and global energy firms such as Total and Shell. "Petronas is also working with ENEOS Corporation, Mitsubishi and JX Nippon to explore the transportation and storage of carbon dioxide from the Tokyo Bay area to Malaysia. This positions CCS not only as a vital decarbonisation tool but also as a promising new revenue stream for the region,' he said. The Energy Asia 2025 conference, with the theme "Delivering Asia's Energy Transition', taking place from June 16 to 18, is an opportune moment for Malaysia and the region to take stock of progress made towards energy transition objectives and reinforce national commitments to achieving net-zero goals. The conference is timely, coming at a critical juncture in economic diversification and sustainable development as nations transition from traditional oil to renewable energy and embrace new technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture. - Bernama

Petronas Unveils P-ETA To Accelerate Energy Industry Workforce Development
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and its partners has launched the Petronas Energy Transition Academy (P-ETA) at the Energy Asia 2025 conference here today. Petronas said in a statement that the academy, located at Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP) in Terengganu, is designed to help prepare the future workforce to meet the demands and respond to the challenges and the opportunities of the lower carbon energy industry. "P-ETA is an initiative by Petronas technical training institute, INSTEP, and will be open to participants from global energy players. "The academy aims to provide learners with the right skills and knowledge to enable them to participate in and contribute to the fast-evolving energy industry," it said. The launch was officiated by Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the academy will lay the foundation for an equitable energy future shaped by leaders and professionals with the vital skillsets to meet the world's growing energy needs. 'As Petronas continues to pursue our energy transition strategy which aims to balance energy security, affordability and sustainability, this initiative is envisaged to support access to equitable opportunities for the workforce delivered through programmes that will be specially curated in the context of the energy transition,' he said. Furthemore, INSTEP has exchanged three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with P-ETA training partners namely Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia, the United Kingdom-based Energy Institute and OPITO respectively. It said the MoUs aim to deliver programmes aligned to international standards that will help fast-track capability development across areas such as carbon management, hydrogen, renewable energy, energy efficiency and circular economy practices.
