Sanju Samson Warned After Shubman Gill's Appointment As T20I Vice-Captain: 'Place Under Threat'

India named a 15-man squad for the next month's Asia Cup which will be led by Suryakumar Yadav with Shubman Gill named his deputy.
Despite not playing T20I for India for over a year now, Shubman Gill has made a comeback as the team's vice-captain for the next month's Asia Cup in UAE. On current form, Gill merits a place in the squad but it has raised a pertinent question: At what spot will the 25-year-old bat in?
Gill has been batting as an opener for his IPL franchise Gujarat Titans as an opener ever since joining them in IPL 2022 and has been scoring bucketful of runs and was the Orange Cap winner in 2023. His inclusion as a vice-captain means Gill will be part of the playing XI and either of the two openers – Abhishek Sharma or Sanju Samson – will have to sit out.
However, on Tuesday, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar dropped a major hint that it will be Samson who may have to give up his spot despite his terrific run as T20I opener for the past year or so.
And legendary India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin is confident that Samson will be dropped.
'What will make it sadder is that you have announced Gill as the vice-captain, so Sanju Samson's place is also under a little threat. Sanju is not going to play. Shubman Gill will play – him at no. 3 and Sanju opening will not happen either. Gill open the batting. Jitesh Sharma has done so well," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat.
While Gill made a comeback, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were ignored.
'Congratulations for Shubman Gill for becoming the vice-captain, a happy day for the Gill household. If I was Jaiswal and Shreyas, I would count myself extremely unlucky," Ashwin said.
'I understand Shubman Gill's selection; he's the vice-captain and scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup," he added.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has been recalled after playing a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning their maiden IPL earlier this year. For Ashwin, the wicketkeeper-batter has earned his spot.
'I am really happy for Jitesh Sharma – a well-earned place. He played a clutch knock for RCB against LSG. You have to remember that finishing is not an easy job. You need to have power and used to hitting fours and sixes at will plus you need to clever in picking which bowler to target, whom to play safe, which areas of ground to target, reading wicket. In that regard, Jitesh has played roles in a very tough position. So very happy for him," he said.

'Security in India much better than Pakistan': Hockey India secretary general responds to Asia Cup withdrawals

Pakistan and Oman had withdrawn from the upcoming Men's Hockey Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, with the former citing security concern as the reason for their exit. Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh, who is also the vice-president of the Asian Hockey Federation, disagrees with their stance. Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh added that the nation will be focusing on successfully hosting the upcoming Men's Asia Cup in Rajgir instead of focusing on Pakistan's withdrawal. Image credit: Hockey India Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh played down the significance of Pakistan and Oman pulling out of the upcoming Men's Asia Cup that will be taking place in Rajgir, Bihar, stating that the security situation in India is much better than Pakistan. The Pakistan Hockey Federation had cited security concerns while pulling out of the Asia Cup, which takes place between 29 August and 7 September even as the Indian government agreed to issue visas for their players. That, however, is not the case with Oman, who have withdrawn from the 8-team event reportedly due to financial constraints. This is not clear to us,' Asian Hockey Federation vice-president Singh said in response to Pakistan's withdrawal. 'If they are citing security concerns, I can confidently say that security and all the arrangements in India are much better than in Pakistan,' he added. Singh added that India's focus remains on successfully hosting the tournament, the winner of which will qualify for next year's World Cup in Belgium and Netherlands. 'Who is coming and who is not coming, we don't care about that. Whoever has qualified, whoever is coming, we welcome everyone to India. 'For us, we have to organise this as a grand success, and whoever is coming, we welcome them wholeheartedly,' he added. Team India face China in their opening game on 29 August before taking on Japan and Kazakhstan on 31 August and 1 September respectively. ICC issues clarification after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli mysteriously disappear from ODI rankings

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who remain active in the ODI format after retiring from T20I and Test cricket over the last one year, were ranked second and fourth respectively in the ICC rankings earlier this month. Their sudden disappearance from the rankings list, however, was met with confusion among followers of the sport. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were among the top-five ODI batters in the world earlier this month before their names suddenly disappeared from the ICC rankings list. Reuters The International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a clarification after Indian batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma mysteriously disappeared from the ODI batting rankings that was released on Wednesday. The Dubai-based governing body for the sport confirmed that it was indeed a technical glitch that had resulted in the two modern-era superstars getting removed from the list. 'There was an error in our rankings tables today, but it has been rectified,' an ICC spokesperson told Hindustan Times. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rohit and Kohli's names were later restored in the rankings, and they currently occupy the 2nd and 4th spots respectively. India Test captain Shubman Gill, recently appointed T20I vice-captain during the BCCI's Asia Cup squad announcement, leads the standings with 784 rating points while Rohit and Pakistan star Babar Azam occupy the next two spots with 756 and 739 points respectively. Kohli (736) and New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell (720) complete the top five. Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, is the fourth Indian in the top-10, occupying the 8th spot with 704 points. What the ICC's rules state on player rankings The ICC's rules state that a player can be removed from the top-100 in the rankings list if they have not played a match within the qualifying period – which stands at 12-15 months for Tests and 9-12 months for white-ball formats ODIs and T20Is. A player will also be removed from the ICC rankings if they have retired from international cricket. If they have quit a specific format then his/her name will be removed from the corresponding rankings and will continue to appear in other lists. Rohit and Kohli, however, had starred in India's triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy in March, the former as captain. With only five months having passed since the Men in Blue's victory over New Zealand in the final in Dubai, there's plenty of time before the Ro-Ko pair are officially removed from the rankings list. Post real money gaming bill, questions aplenty for Indian cricket

IPL may feel aftershocks One of the knock-on effects of a blanket ban could be felt by Indian cricket, especially the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). Various IPL teams as well as the competition itself are tied up with various real money gaming firms, including Dream XI and My11Circle. Even if Indian cricket will not have a lot of problems onboarding new sponsors — if they want to go down that path — there may be some short term pain. "Fantasy gaming platforms like My11Circle and Dream11 have become heavyweight backers of Indian sports," said Santosh N, managing partner of D & P Advisory, an independent valuation company. "My11Circle has committed Rs 625 cr for an IPL associate sponsorship slot, while Dream11 has consistently backed franchises such as Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad as title or principal sponsors. My11Circle is currently an IPL associate sponsor at the league level, contributing a large share of central sponsorship revenue. Separately, Dream11 has team-level sponsorships, serving as Title Partner and Principal Partners for some teams. Together, fantasy sports brands account for hundreds of crores in sponsorship inflows, making IPL one of the most exposed properties to a potential ban." Dream11, as it stands, is the Indian team's 'lead sponsor' but that is scheduled to end after next year's men's T20 World Cup. "Banning it would strip IPL and many smaller leagues of vital funding, compress marketing budgets, and likely curb the steady upward trend in sponsorship revenues." Santosh added. My11Circle also counts a number of active Indian cricketers as their brand ambassadors. Per the bill, they can't endorse any of these products. Set for a challenge? If and when it becomes law, the gaming companies may decide to challenge its constitutionality. Sports lawyers this newspaper spoke to said that fantasy games like Dream11 are 'games of skill' according to a Supreme Court judgment a few years earlier. A Dream11 spokesperson 'declined to comment' for multiple questions raised by this mast. The bill caught a lot of industry stakeholders off guard, especially because this government's previous moves with respect to the online gaming industry was seen as favouring them. It's been reported that the government are now citing national security as well as social issues for this step.
