Euro 2025: Denmark meets Sweden again one month after being routed 6-1
It is the challenge facing Denmark players Friday when they open their Women's European Championship campaign in Geneva against Sweden. Germany and Poland also are in Group C and play Friday in St. Gallen.
'The things that hurt the most is what teaches you,' Denmark coach Andrée Jeglertz said Thursday in translated comments. 'I am convinced we will see a completely different kind of performance.'
Sweden raced to a three-goal lead on Denmark inside 11 minutes on June 3 when winning a Nations League group was at stake, in order to advance to the semifinals later this year.
Star forward Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring in the first minute and went on to complete her hat trick.
That's all forgotten now insisted Kosovare Asllani, who was captain that night of a Sweden team missing its key defender Magdalena Eriksson.
'It's a one-off that we beat them by 6-1,' Asllani said Thursday. 'We also feel like we've put that match behind us.'
Denmark defender Stine Ballisager, who got a close-up view of Sweden's rampant attack, dismissed the risk of focusing on the heavy defeat: 'We know what we stand for.'
'What you build in two years isn't demolished in one match,' coach Jeglertz said, while acknowledging 'after the game, yes, it was tough.
'We have dealt with it in a good way,' said the Denmark coach, who is Swedish. 'It's amazing that we have the opportunity to play the same opponent again without any match in between.'
Sweden coach's farewell
Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson was elusive about planning for a quick rematch with the same tactics, suggesting his past philosophy in club soccer was 'always change a winning team.'
Gerhardsson will leave after the tournament. In his eight-year tenure, Sweden was twice a World Cup semifinalist, took the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and reached the Euro 2022 semifinals.
'We've become more of a playmaking team,' Asllani said of the coach's influence. 'We have the courage to play more fun football, more intense football if you like.'
But the 6-1? 'That's not going to matter at all (Friday),' she said.
Asllani reaches 200
The 35-year-old midfielder's 200th game for the national team arrives in what she says will be her last tournament.
'Its going to be very special,' Asllani said of her 'enormous sense of pride' reaching the landmark. 'It's a magical number to achieve in a career.'
Eriksson vs Harder
The duel between Sweden defender Eriksson and Denmark star forward Pernille Harder is much-anticipated duel. The stellar veterans have been a couple for more than a decade and are teammates at Bayern Munich.
'It's quite a special situation,' Harder told tournament organizer UEFA. 'We have tried this a few times before, so we know that when the game starts, we kind of forget that we are partners. We go all in.'

Host Geneva's artwork
Denmark-Sweden is the first of five Euro 2025 games in Geneva, the city which hosts the European headquarters of the United Nations and commissioned a stunning piece of public art for the tournament.
Only aerial shots do justice to the painted grass image of a young girl sketching a chalk outline of a soccer field. It was created by artist Saype in a lakeside park, looking up to the 18th-century villa that hosted a 2021 diplomatic summit between then-U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Chelsea set to sign English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea is expected to sign English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, the German club said Thursday. Gittens follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, another former Manchester City youth player who developed his game at Dortmund. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United. Dortmund said that 'all parties involved agreed in principle' in Florida and contract details were being finalized. Both teams are in the United States and are into the quarterfinals at the Club World Cup. 'The negotiations with Chelsea were challenging, but in the end, we are glad that we can most likely realize our expectations and gain planning security,' Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said in the team's statement. Gittens joined Dortmund in 2020 shortly after his 16th birthday and scored 12 times in all competitions last season, but was often dropped to the bench after coach Niko Kovac took over in February. Known as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens when he made his Dortmund debut in 2022, the winger announced last year he wanted to be known simply as Jamie Gittens. He said he was following the example of his father, who also uses part of his full surname. Playing for more than one team during the Club World Cup isn't allowed under FIFA rules, so Gittens will have to wait for the new English season to make his debut for Chelsea. ___ AP soccer:

Dodgers' Muncy on injured list with knee bruise after collision with White Sox's Taylor
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy went on the injured list Thursday with a left knee bone bruise. He left in the sixth inning Wednesday night after a collision with Chicago White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was attempting a steal. Muncy took a throw from catcher Will Smith and tagged out Taylor. Muncy sprawled on his back as a Dodgers trainer came out to check on him. He had to be helped off the field and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg. A White Sox trainer checked on Taylor, who sustained a bruised back and left the game. The incident occurred just before Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got his 3,000th career strikeout against Vinny Capra to end the inning. Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 81 games this season. The Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he batted .292 with eight homers, 37 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 66 games. He was acquired in April from the Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Carlos Duran after being designated for assignment on March 30. Julie Vanloo finds new home with Los Angeles after getting cut by Golden State earlier in week
NEW YORK (AP) — Julie Vanloo stood outside Barclays Center waiting the final minutes to clear waivers. She had flown to New York a day earlier after getting cut by the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday. When the clcok struck 5, she walked into the arena and joined her new team, the Los Angeles Sparks. It has been a rollercoaster week for the 32-year-old, who helped Belgium win the EuroBasket ttile. She skipped the celebration in Belgium to fly back to San Francisco to rejoin the Valkyries only to be waived an hour after her arrival. 'To hear 1 hour upon arrival: we have to waive you. Honestly, that stung. I understand it's business, but nothing prepares you for the loneliness that comes with getting cut,' she said on social media. 'It feels like the whole world suddenly crashes on your shoulders.' The Sparks were happy to add her, giving the team another talented guard. 'I'm so happy, so excited for her,' said Sparks guard Julie Allemand, who played on the Belgium team with Vanloo . 'First of all, happy to have her in the team. She's going to help us a lot, but happy for her because, like, the last days were crazy for her.' Allemand said she had been talking to her friend all week and had hoped the Sparks would pick her up after she was cut. She was texting with Vanloo in the final minutes leading up to her joining the team. It takes 48 hours for players to clear waivers. 'It was crazy because, like, we were in the locker room and we were waiting for her,' Allemand said. 'Like she was waiting outside.' Sparks first-year coach Lynne Roberts was thrilled to get Vanloo. In the preseason she torched the Sparks for four 3-pointers in a what felt like under 2 minutes. 'When we heard that the Valkyries had waived her, I immediately said to our GM, let's see if we can get her,' Roberts said. The coach wasn't sure how much if at all Vanloo would play against the Liberty on Thursday night. 'Safe to say, she's not familiar with the playbook quite yet,' Roberts said. 'But, you know, we'll see. I'd like to get her out there just a little bit.' ___ AP WNBA:
