Tesla hit with shocking sales news in major market: 'Nowhere near the level we are used to'
As The Driven reported, Volkswagen now sells over twice as many EVs in Norway as Tesla.
Tesla sales have declined not only in the United States but also in Europe. Analysts attribute this trend, at least partly, to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's polarizing involvement in politics and with the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, potentially making the ownership of a Tesla feel like a political statement to some drivers.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen took over 20% of the market share of new car sales in April, compared with just 8.6% for Tesla. Three of the five bestselling cars in Norway are Volkswagens: the ID.4, ID.7, and ID.3.
Although Tesla sales in Norway are down, the Tesla Model Y still topped the chart as the bestselling car model in April.
According to Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, the director of Norway's Road Traffic Information Council, "Tesla is nowhere near the level we are used to, you can't pretend otherwise," per The Drive.
"It may be a sign that many people now find that other brands are just as interesting and have just as much to offer in roughly the same price segment," he added.
While this news from Norway may be discouraging for Tesla, it's positive news for EVs in general.
The overall number of electric cars on Norwegian roads is increasing, and tax law changes have made EVs even more enticing and accessible for drivers over the years, according to El País.
However, regardless of where you live, when you make your next car an EV, you can also save money on gas and maintenance while eliminating exhaust pollution. EVs are a cleaner, greener way to drive, and they are more affordable than ever before.

You can make EV ownership even more cost-effective by charging your vehicle with solar power you generate at home. Powering your EV with solar energy is cheaper than paying for public charging stations and more self-sufficient than relying on the overstrained grid.
EV drivers can save as much as around $10,000 on solar panel installations by comparing trusted installer quotes through a free online tool from EnergySage, which primarily operates in the U.S. If the upfront cost of solar installation is out of your budget, leasing panels may be an option. Palmetto's LightReach solar panel leasing program helps EV drivers get a solar setup for no money down while locking in low energy rates.
Regarding Norway's EV momentum, one adviser and investor in Norway commented in a LinkedIn post, "As Norway continues to lead by example, the collaboration between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and #CPOs like Recharge remains crucial in paving the way for a greener future. Other countries have a lot to learn here!"
"I'm looking forward to seeing how the new and fairly affordable smaller BEV models get on in Norway," a CleanTechnica writer commented. "I'm also interested to see whether tax policy regarding the residual powertrains will turn to tackling diesel and HEV sales."

Nvidia Stock (NVDA) Weakens as Trump Says '14 Days' Until Chips Tariffs Hit
Shares in semiconductor giants Nvidia (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) were bashed today as President Trump said tariffs on chips were only a fortnight away. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Firing Line Speaking on board Air Force One as he made his way to a summit with Russia's President Putin over a potential end to the Ukraine war, Trump said chips and steel were next in the tariff firing line. 'I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after on steel and on, I would say, chips,' Trump told reporters. He said the rates would be lower at the start to allow companies to build up domestic manufacturing in the U.S., rising sharply later, following a pattern he has also outlined for tariffs on pharmaceuticals. He did not reveal what rates of tariff he would impose. 'I'm going to have a rate that is going to be lower at the beginning – that gives them a chance to come in and build – and very high after a certain period of time,' he said. Trump added that he felt confident that companies would opt to manufacture in the United States, rather than face high tariffs. Trump in February raised tariffs on steel and aluminum to a flat 25%, but he announced in May that he would double the rate to 50% to boost domestic manufacturers. He also said that he was ready to impose a tariff of 100% on imports of semiconductors, but companies that committed to building up manufacturing in the United States would be exempt. Tariff Weight The tariff threat has been a big weight on semiconductor stocks this year particularly around April when concerns were – until now – at their highest. They have reacted by upping their U.S. manufacturing commitment. Nvidia has already announced plans within the next four years to produce up to half a trillion dollars of AI infrastructure in the United States through partnerships with the likes of TSMC (TSM) and Foxconn. It has also commissioned more than a million square feet of manufacturing space to build and test NVIDIA Blackwell chips in Arizona and AI supercomputers in Texas. Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su was also recently asked about incentives to bring chip manufacturing to the U.S. during an interview with Wired. In response, she said, 'We absolutely should bring manufacturing back to the US. Absolutely, 100 percent.' What Stocks are Most at Risk From Trump Tariffs? Judge says FTC investigation into Media Matters ‘should alarm all Americans'
A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into left-leaning advocacy group Media Matters. Back in 2023, Media Matters published research showing ads from major companies had appeared alongside antisemitic and other offensive content on Elon Musk-owned X. When major advertisers subsequently pulled back from the platform, X sued Media Matters. It also sued advertisers and advertiser groups over what it claimed was a 'systematic illegal boycott.' After Musk's then-ally Donald Trump took office again in January, the FTC also began an investigation into whether Media Matters had illegally colluded with advertisers. On Friday, however, Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan sided with Media Matters and blocked the FTC's investigation. In her decision, Sooknanan (a district court judge for the District of Columbia appointed by Joe Biden) wrote that the Media Matters article represented 'quintessential First Amendment activity' and the FTC's 'expansive' investigative demands appeared to be 'a retaliatory act.' 'It should alarm all Americans when the Government retaliates against individuals or organizations for engaging in constitutionally protected public debate,' she wrote. 'And that alarm should ring even louder when the Government retaliates against those engaged in newsgathering and reporting.' Sooknanan noted that before his appointment as the current FTC chair, Andrew Ferguson had appeared on Steve Bannon's podcast and called for the FTC to investigate progressive groups criticizing online disinformation, and that he subsequently 'brought on several senior staffers at the FTC who previously made public comments about Media Matters.' The FTC did not immediately respond to a TechCrunch email asking whether it intends to appeal. Is Walmart (WMT) a Buy Ahead of Q2 Earnings?
U.S. retail giant Walmart (WMT) is set to release its Q2 earnings report next week. This has some investors wondering whether it's a good idea to buy shares of WMT beforehand. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. What Wall Street Expects Wall Street is expecting WMT to report earnings of $0.72 per share, which would represent year-over-year growth of 7.46%. Revenues for the period are expected to come in at $175.51 billion, up 3.65% from the prior-year quarter. Will WMT be able to beat these estimates? As can be seen below, it has a very strong track record of doing just that. Key Issues Ahead of Earnings Walmart is a bellwether for the strength of the American consumer given that it is the largest retailer in the U.S. and sells everything from electronics to clothing, groceries and toys. As such, investors, analysts, economists and politicians will be looking at its results with eagle eyes. One area of particular focus, according to Victoria Scholar, Head of Investment at interactive investor, will be whether President Trump's tariffs trade policy has impacted US consumer confidence and prices. Have the import levies hit Walmart's top and bottom lines as well as prices on the shelves? 'As a company that prides itself on rock bottom prices, Walmart has already expressed frustration about the extra costs associated with tariffs, particularly from China,' Scholar said. 'Walmart delivered its first ever profitable quarter in e-commerce both domestically and globally in May, so focus next week will be on whether it can continue to grow earnings there. Investors will also be watching out for the performance of Walmart's advertising and its membership subscription Walmart+ as well as the retailer looking to bring in a diversity of revenue streams.' See below: Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell, urged investors to also look out for comments on shipping lead times, as well as inventory on the balance sheet. 'Retailing is all about shifting the right products at the right price in the right format to the target demographic. Do that, and the amount of unsold stock will be low and the need to discount to shift it will be reduced. Too much stock can mean price cutting is required and that could show up in the gross profit and then further down the profit and loss account,' she said. Is WMT a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, WMT has a Strong Buy consensus based on 27 Buy ratings. Its highest price target is $130. WMT stock's consensus price target is $113, implying a 13.33% upside.
