Whooping cough cases approach near record numbers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Holiday cheer is in the air, and so are infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whooping cough cases in the United States are beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels.
According to Dr. Jason Newland, chief of infectious diseases at Nationwide Children's Hospital, there are over 32,000 recorded cases this year alone in the U.S., which is six times greater than last year.
The most up-to-date data from the CDC, which was released in early November, showed Pennsylvania and New York had reported the most cases of whooping cough at more than 2,000 each. Ohio, Wisconsin, Washington, and California all have more than 1,000 cases reported so far.
Dr. Newland said whooping cough, sometimes referred to as pertussis, often presents similar symptoms as the common cold. This can include fever, runny nose, and eventually an aggressive cough.
'The difference is the cough can come in paroxysms, but the better word for it is just a lot at one time, to where we hear that we say 'whoop' because you cough, cough, cough, cough, cough and then you go whoop because you've got to breathe,' he said.
Dr. Newland said the whooping cough vaccine is the best way to prevent the infection, starting at two months old.
'And then because the vaccine is not perfect, meaning it doesn't provide me protection the rest of my life, you really need to get it every ten years,' Dr. Newland said. He noted, however, that fewer people are getting vaccinated.
Experts believe the 2024 surge in cases may be in part because of missed vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Widespread masking in 2020 and 2021 also helped prevent spreading of the bacteria that causes pertussis. Now, the disease is back with a vengeance, and we're seeing more cases than we did in 2019.

'You and I, we get pertussis, we're going to cough, and we're going to cough a lot, and we might cough 100 days, and we might cough so much we break a rib, or we cough so much that we want to vomit, all terrible things, which is why I want my vaccine,' Dr. Newland said. The linger cough associated with pertussis has also earned it another name: the 100-day cough.
Infants are the most susceptible to catching the illness.
'They can come to the hospital not breathing,' Dr. Newland said. 'They can have neurologic conditions making them seize and they can die.'
If you have any other holiday gatherings this year, he recommends taking proper precautions.
'You can always wear a mask to prevent things like pertussis, things like RSV, things like influenza,' Dr. Newland said. 'Influenza's rip-roaring right now.'
He advised those seeking to shield themselves from pertussis to wash their hands frequently, and maintain distance from those who are infected.
'We learned these things during the pandemic. We can keep doing that to protect us against pertussis and all of these respiratory illnesses.'
The treatment for whooping cough is simple, with many people able to recover with the help of antibiotics. Experts are, however, concerned about the illness because it's an airborne disease, making it highly contagious.
'If we all get vaccinated [before we are] going to be around the youngest and most vulnerable, we help protect them even more,' Dr. Newland said. 'So, having 30,000 cases is scary because you know there's some infants in that and you're putting others at risk.'

In fact, the most recent CDC data showed that 14.5% of Americans struggled to get to sleep most days or every day over 30 days. So it's no surprise that the Military Sleep Method has gained popularity, particularly on social media. This sleep hack claims to help you fall asleep within two minutes, but there is a catch that many people might not be aware of when they see TikTok posts praising its effectiveness. Here, we're speaking to an expert to explore what that the Military Sleep Method is, how you can help make it more effective for you, and other sleep techniques (aside from making sure you're sleeping on the best mattress for you) and tech you can try tonight. What is the Military Sleep Method? Unsurprisingly, given the name, the Military Sleep Method is a sleep hack first employed by the US military in order to assist soldiers in falling asleep more quickly. "The Military Sleep Method is a relaxation technique reportedly developed by the U.S. Navy during World War II to help pilots fall asleep quickly, even under noisy, stressful conditions," says licensed clinical psychologist specializing in sleep and trauma, Dr. Leah Kaylor. "It was popularized in the 1981 book Relax and Win: Championship Performance," she explains. Written by Lloyd 'Bud' Winter, the book details the Military Sleep Method and how it can help you sleep in just two minutes. The Military Sleep Method is a relaxation technique reportedly developed by the U.S. Navy during World War II. It works by guiding you through full-body relaxation and mental quieting. Dr. Leah Kaylor, Ph.D. MSCP One of the big draws of the Military Sleep Method, is the claim that you may have seen in viral TikTok videos, which is that it can help you fall asleep in just 120 seconds. "It works by guiding you through full-body relaxation and mental quieting," explains Dr. Kaylor, who briefly explains the process: "First, you relax your face (including jaw and eyelids), then drop your shoulders and let your arms go limp. You exhale fully, relaxing your chest, then move down to release tension in your legs. Finally, you clear your mind for about 10 seconds—either by visualizing something calming," she tells us. This can be lying in a canoe on a still lake with a clear sky, or in a velvet hammock in a completely dark room. If your mind wanders, try repeating the phrase 'don't think', says Dr. Kaylor. "This reduces muscle tension, slows your breathing, and quiets mental chatter, all of which help trigger your body's natural sleep response," she explains of how the method works. So... what's the big catch? Falling asleep in two minutes certainly makes the Military Sleep Method sound like a dream fix if you're having trouble dropping off. But there is a drawback to this method, which Dr. Kaylor explains to us. "The catch is this takes weeks if not months of consistent nightly practice to master," she says. The method is said to be effective for 96% of people within a period of six weeks. Our Senior Sleep Editor, Certified Sleep Science Coach Claire Davis, has been practicing the method for several years and finds it an effective way to fall asleep within a few minutes, but she acknowledges that it won't be a way to drop off in such a short amount of time without practice (and certainly not on the first few attempts). How can you make sure the Military Sleep Method works for you? Sleep hacks like the Military Sleep Method can help you fall asleep faster, but they're likely to work best if you practice them while also paying attention to your sleep hygiene and nighttime routine. "Over time, this builds a strong 'sleep signal' so that when you start the Military Sleep Method, your body is already primed for rest," explains Dr. Kaylor. Perfect your sleep environment Part of the Military Sleep Method is imagining you're somewhere relaxing, like on a canoe or in a hammock in a dark room. It's likely this is going to be more effective if your sleep environment is already primed for a good night's rest. "Make your bedroom dark and cool," says Dr. Kaylor. The best temperature for sleeping, according to recent research, is 65 to 70°F (18 to 21°C), so it's worth adjusting your thermostat to within that range. And, if you don't have a pitch black bedroom (who does?), consider blackout blinds or a sleep mask (check out our favorite for 2025 here). Avoid consuming certain things before bedtime This is a tip we've shared plenty of times before, but it bears repeating. "Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening," says Dr. Kaylor. Caffeine's half life means that it can stay in your system for five, six, or even up to 12 hours, though this will depend on your individual physiology and lifestyle. Experts generally advise that it's wise to stop consuming any source of caffeine around eight hours before bed. Alcohol might feel trickier, since we often indulge in a glass of wine with dinner, or drinks in the evening. And while the sedative effect it provides might give you the illusion that you're falling asleep faster after a few alcoholic beverages, your REM sleep can be delayed and disrupted, and later as the alcohol is metabolized, you can spend more time awake or in the lightest sleep stage, meaning you're not getting enough full sleep cycles to enjoy the restorative effect of sleep. Focus on your nighttime routine "Create a relaxing wind-down routine like stretching, reading, or light journaling," advises Dr. Kaylor. While a nighttime routine might conjure memories of childhood, it's actually a really effective way of signaling to your mind and body that it's time to relax, and it can then help you to drift off more quickly. Generally, it's sensible to allow an hour before bedtime for this routine, and to select activities that you personally find relaxing. Those might be the suggestions Dr. Kaylor provided above, or listening to calming music or having a warm shower or bath, for example. Sleep hacks that can help you fall asleep faster tonight While the Military Sleep Method is certainly worth investing the time in to master, if you want a few additional tools in your sleep kit that can assist you in dropping off more quickly tonight, we've got you. "If you want something that works right away, try a 4-7-8 breathing exercise, progressive muscle relaxation, or listening to calming audio like white noise or guided meditation. Lowering the lights an hour before bed, avoiding screens, and keeping your bedroom cool can also help you fall asleep faster tonight," advises Dr. Kaylor. Our Sleep Features Editor, Lauren Jeffries, has tried nine sleep hacks that claim to help you fall asleep fast, and found cognitive shuffling to be among those she found effective. What sleep tech can also help you fall asleep fast? Adopting sleep hacks and methods like those we discuss above are great tools, but sleep tech designed to improve your slumber can also help too. We've selected three items you might want to consider... 1. A sleep mask In an ideal world, we'd all have a completely dark sleep space, largely because darkness helps stimulate the production of melatonin (the 'sleepy hormone,') from the pineal gland, while light suppresses it. Since that's not always possible, investing in a sleep mask, can block out light and help you drop off more swiftly. What you pick depends on your needs (and your budget). High tech options include the app-controlled Aura Smart Sleep Mask (pictured, MSRP $229), which promises to block out 100% of light and has speakers built in so you can listen to one of Aura's sleep sounds as you drift off. Alternatively simple satin sleep masks can often do the same job of keeping out light for a fraction of the price; many are available for around $10. 2. A smart bed If you want to really upgrade your bedroom in your quest to fall asleep fast, smart beds including the Eight Sleep Pod 4, the Saatva Solaire and the Sleep Number i8 (all of which feature in our guide to the best smart beds and smart mattresses available) can offer features like dual temperature control (meaning each side of the bed can be set to a different temperature), and adjustable firmness (the Solaire has 50 firmness settings!). Typically app-controlled, smart beds are high quality and packed with the latest sleep tech to help you customize your sleep experience in order to fall asleep as easily, quickly and comfortably as possible. Ear plugs If the sound of snoring, late night revellers, traffic or roommates clanking around the house doesn't lull you to sleep or disturb your rest, you're lucky. Because research has shown that "nocturnal noise pollution significantly impairs sleep." A generally affordable piece of sleep tech that can combat unwanted noise pollution at night is the humble ear plug. Why IKEA Turned Away My Son: A Parent's Warning

In late June, a few days before Disability Pride Month began, I took my 7-year-old child on an outing to an Ikea store. As I filled out a waiver so he could enter the store's small play area, I noticed I was the only parent present. It turned out that parents typically drop off their children while they shop, but that wasn't an option for me. My son has a rare, severe form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome, among other medical conditions, and he can't be without a grown-up carrying his seizure rescue medication, as I was. The scary reality is that around one in five children with Dravet syndrome die in childhood because the seizures can be so severe. There is currently no cure. I explained this to a staff member and told her that I'd need to be in the room with my child. She informed me that no parents were allowed into the play area. 'But isn't there a policy for kids with disabilities?' I asked. She told me a service dog could accompany a child, but a parent could not. I stopped signing the form. I said to the staff member, 'That's discrimination against kids with disabilities.' She didn't respond. I hadn't known about the store's play area before this visit, and I had been happy to see that it wasn't a playground ― just a space with toys like a train set and dart board. Since my son had a seizure at an indoor playground a year ago, I'd stopped taking him to them. But now, even this play space was not an option for him. My child and I were both upset. He loves going to Ikea to walk through the showroom and eat in the cafeteria ― a place open enough that it was the only indoor restaurant he ate in during our four years of masking during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have several Ikea furniture items, including bunk beds, a coat/shoe cubby and a toy chest. He helped us build them all. Since his severe seizures began about two years ago, he's had to change his life in significant ways. Heat, sports, just running around to play, illness and excitement have all become triggers for him. Summer is especially hard — on hot days, he can't be outside. In fact, we had driven the hour to Ikea in traffic just so he could walk and have a change of scenery in a large, air-conditioned space because the temperature outside was dangerous for him. I told him, 'This isn't OK.' He said, 'We should talk to someone.' I was proud of him. After talking to a few staff members, we spoke with a manager, who said he wasn't familiar with the policy, and he'd get back to me the next day. He didn't. Later, I looked online, and there was a section on the Ikea website directing caretakers of children with disabilities to start a conversation with the Ikea store manager about how the child can best have their needs accommodated in the play area. I was hopeful that when we went in the future, we could show the policy to the staff. However, that doesn't undo the pain my child felt after hearing that he wasn't welcome in that play space because of his disabilities. During the hour-long car ride home afterward, we talked a lot about discrimination. I reinforced that what happened wasn't OK, and that the more than 3 million kids with disabilities in our country deserve to be included. I told him about my older sister, his late aunt, who had microcephaly and faced various barriers to equal access too, like having to sit on the sidelines of playgrounds in her wheelchair. It upset me. When I was 10 in 1993, I read about new accessible playgrounds in an issue of Scholastic News, and I hoped we could build one for her. Sadly, she died a few weeks later, but in her memory, my family and I worked with the Cincinnati Parks Department to build an accessible playground. My son thought that was cool. I also explained that many groups of people face discrimination for reasons such as gender, race, sexual orientation, immigration status and more, and we need to be allies and stand up against all forms of discrimination. I also told him that one way to help is to make disabilities more visible and raise awareness, as we have done in his school class for the past three years. This June, for Dravet Syndrome Awareness Month, he and I held a neighborhood lemonade and cupcake fundraiser and donated money to the Dravet Syndrome Foundation, which helps fund the kind of critical epilepsy research that the Trump administration has recently cut. After our experience at Ikea, as one of his bedtime books, we re-read the picture book All the Way to the Top, about a child who protested and helped advocate for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed 35 years ago. Afterward, I told him about children with disabilities who went to Congress this summer, asking their leaders not to make it harder for them to go to the doctor and get the medicine and treatment they need. Unfortunately, President Donald Trump's domestic policy bill has since passed, and many people, including children with disabilities, will be harmed as a result. Two days after the bill passed, my child woke up and said, 'I want to make a sign about disabilities.' He asked for my help with spelling before writing the words 'People with disabilities are important' in pencil and then tracing over them with marker. He stood by our Disability Pride yard sign, and then, since the temperature was cooler out, he walked down our street and held it up for cars passing by. He said that when he grows up, he wants to be an 'activist' and 'protester.' I told him that he already is.
