Thrilling match between Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie schools went to a penalty shoot out

Daily Record29-04-2025
Two Stewartry teams competed in the D&GSFA Small Schools Final at Queen of the South Arena in Dumfries recently. Dalbeattie High School Under 16s took on local rivals, Castle Douglas High School Under 16s on Queens 4G pitch, with both teams showcasing their talents in what turned out to be a thrilling contest. Both sets of players adapted well to the quick and large playing surface and the first half saw chances created by both teams but excellent goalkeeping and stout defending kept the match scoreless at half-time. The two coaches, Mr Mein and McNay, asked for more directness in the second half, and it was not long before David Perez latched on to a long ball from defence, nipping in and around the Dalbeattie goalkeeper, slotting the ball home for Castle Douglas' opening goal. For the remainder of the match, play and chances were fairly even, but the last five minutes saw Dalbeattie throw everything forward, and with 25 seconds to go, a fine build up put through Robbie Wykes, who composed himself, to equalise in the dying seconds. It has been agreed with Mr McGuffie, the official, that the match would proceed straight to penalties. Castle Douglas converted all of their efforts, whilst Dalbeattie found the Castle Douglas netminder in fine form. Castle Douglas edged the drama 4-2 and lifted the trophy in a thrilling affair. Well done to all players, coaches and fans for participating in a great final. Many thanks to QOS for their hospitality.

Threave Rovers continue good start with 5-0 win over Kilsyth Athletic

The Castle Douglas side made it seven points from nine in the West of Scotland League's second division. Threave Rovers continued their good start to the season with a 5-0 win over Kilsyth Athletic on Saturday. ‌ Ross Irving kept up his fine form with the opener after just a few minutes, skipper Dylan Cairnie getting the second 10 minutes before the break. ‌ And when Harry Officer curled one home from 20 yards it was game over. ‌ Cairnie set up Irving for Threave's fourth – and the striker's third brace in three games before Liam Douglas completed the scoring. Threave boss Danny Dunglinson said: 'We scored early on, then they came back into the game and had a couple of chances. They'll probably feel they should have scored one and got level, but once we scored the second goal we were in total control. 'The wind was against us in the first half, it was a lot stronger than we realised and we got caught a couple of times, which was where their chances came from. 'Once we had the wind at our backs in the second half they couldn't get out and we scored another three goals. 'Once the third goal went in it was game over. It was important to get that and you can enjoy the rest of the game and be a bit more relaxed - and you take your chances when you're a bit more relaxed. ‌ 'We had five boys on the bench that would probably get in any West of Scotland premier team. 'We just felt with two games this week we had to get boys minutes, rather than playing the same team. It was a chance for us to rest a few boys, get them on after 60 or 70 minutes so they had minutes ahead of Tuesday but weren't going to be fatigued.' The game also saw the first appearance for summer signing Robbie Hogg. ‌ The striker joined Threave from South of Scotland League champs Lochar Thistle and put in a man of the match display after coming off the bench. Dunglinson said: 'He's been on holiday - he went on a Saturday so he automatically misses two games. It was his first game back but he had played pre-season. ‌ 'He came on and was man of the match, he came on after 20 minutes as Owen Brown came off injured and was the catalyst for everything. He pressed well and didn't stop running so that spreads throughout the whole team. 'He's going to be a big player for us the rest of the season.' Threave made it three wins in a row on Tuesday night with a 4-0 triumph at Maybole. ‌ Lewis Downie's goal had them in front at the break with Liam Douglas, Frazer Glen and Dylan Cairnie on target in the second half. Saturday sees Threave go to Easterhouse in The Finest South Region Challenge Cup, the Glasgow side having won promotion from the West of Scotland League Fourth Division last season. Dunglinson said: 'They came up last year and have started OK. It's always a tough place to go, we went there a few years ago and were beaten. It's not going to be easy going up there. 'It's a cup game so it's a nice wee break from the league. We'll take it seriously and try to win the game but it's also an opportunity for boys to get minutes that need minutes

Dumfries and Galloway cyclists enjoy success at Scottish championships

Josh and Cobey Stewart won gold at the Scottish Youth Circuit Championships, with Rebecca Saunderson winning at the Scottish National Circuit Championships. There was huge success for Stewartry riders at national competitions over the weekend. ‌ Corsock brothers Josh and Cobey, were successful at the Scottish Youth Circuit Championships on Saturday. ‌ And Studio Velo's Rebecca Saunderson won at the Scottish National Circuit Championships on Sunday. ‌ Josh and Cobey, riding for Stepping Stanes Youth Cycling, won the under-12 and under-14 age groups respectively at the youth competition, held at Tulliallan Police College in Kincardine. Both boys raced hard, pulling a comfortable lead on from the chasing groups to claim the titles and pull on the Scottish champions jerseys. The final race of the day was the first ever youth circuit relay, with younger brother Mitch and local rider Izzy Barbour joining the team. The four riders won by more than 40 seconds thanks to four flying laps, taking the win from some of Scotland's largest youth cycling clubs. ‌ The following day saw the Scottish National Circuit Championships at Fife Cycle Park. Rebecca was up against some strong riders but kept the pace high throughout the race, finishing off with a perfect sprint to become the Scottish champion. Huge thanks go to Gillespie, Gifford and Brown solicitors and estate agents in Dalbeattie and Stewartry Sports Council for their continued support.
