Bulls and Sharks on URC semifinal collision course
The Bulls and the Sharks are on a collision course for the semifinals in the United Rugby Championship after they grabbed second and third spots respectively on the points table in the final round of league matches this weekend.
The Bulls stampeded the Dragons 55-15 in Pretoria, while the Sharks got the better of the Scarlets in a drab 12-3 win in Durban. Leinster topped the table after beating Glasgow Warriors 13-5, which condemned the Scottish team to fourth spot on the ladder.
Before the Bulls and the Sharks can commence hostilities, however, they have potentially awkward home quarterfinal clashes against Edinburgh and Munster respectively.
Edinburgh won last month's fixture against Bulls in Scotland but are yet to beat the Bulls in Pretoria. They have, however, come close on a few occasions.

The Sharks potentially face even greater peril when they host the 2023 champions Munster. The Irish outfit are particularly difficult to put down in knock-out matches and their march to the title two years ago will forever be etched in the competition's folklore.
Munster served a reminder of their prowess in knock-out rugby when they dumped two-time champions La Rochelle away from home from the Champions Cup last month. The Sharks will have to be better than they were against the Scarlets if they are to beat the belligerent Munstermen.
Though they secured fifth spot on the table with their 34-24 win over Cardiff on Friday the Stormers did not get the matchup they desired in the quarterfinals. Instead of travelling to Durban they now have to pack for Glasgow for a clash against the defending champions.

Should they beat Franco Smith's team their reward will likely beat a semifinal against desperately title seeking Leinster.
The Stormers will need no reminding of their defeat to the Warriors in Stellenbosch earlier in the campaign. In fact, after winning their first clash against the Warriors in the URC in 2022, the Stormers have now lost four in a row against the Glaswegians.
That defeat in Stellenbosch came at great cost but personnel wise John Dobson's team has been in far better shape of late.
Leinster will play the Scarlets in the other quarterfinal despite the Welsh team's defeat in Durban.
They grabbed eighth spot after Cardiff and Benetton suffered heartbreak in Cape Town and Cork in the final round respectively.
The Lions finished 11th after they recorded a heart-stopping 29-28 win over the Ospreys in Johannesburg.

The Boks get their 2025 season under way with a non-Test against the Barbarians in Cape Town next week, before taking on Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), and Georgia in Mbombela as part of the incoming series. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus has said that he is going to use these four games to experiment a bit, give some caps to players who have less experience, and try build some winning momentum ahead of the Rugby Championship. The 22-year-old Hooker, who started off his senior career with the Sharks at centre, as been largely used on the wing over the past season and has played superbly. Erasmus, however, said Hooker would be considered as a centre. 'We don't put pressure on those guys (the unions) to play certain guys in certain positions or certain styles (of play). That's why we have the alignment camps, just to make sure the guys know what we expect at Springbok level and in the year what they will have to change,' explained Erasmus. 'So we don't put them (the Bok squad) on the field before the physical training camp that we have now had (ahead of the start of the season). 'It's very difficult to judge a guy like Ethan Hooker who (usually) plays wing for the Sharks, and they've got a certain defence system. But we see him as a 13 and want to use him there.' De Allende link-up Springbok veteran inside centre Damian de Allende is looking forward to possibly playing alongside Hooker this season, and helping to guide a player who he believes is set to have a long career with the Boks. 'I think I can learn a lot from Ethan. The way he's played in the URC this (past) season has been incredible. I think he's been the backbone of the Sharks backline. He's always going forward and is very dominant,' said De Allende. 'I would love to train with him a bit more and obviously play with him. Just to get a good feel for him and his communication on the field. I have trained alongside him a bit, but it hasn't been that much. But (from what I have seen) he's got a good head on his shoulders and a great future ahead of him. 'So myself, Jesse (Kriel), Andre (Esterhuizen), and Lukhy (Lukhanyo Am), will do the best we can to make sure that we can give him as much knowledge as possible, so that when he does get the opportunity, he is ready and can go out there and express himself.'

Leighton Koopman | Published 8 hours ago With the next instalment of the United Rugby Championship starting in a couple of months, the Lions have added some exciting players to their arsenal in a bid to strengthen their squad to challenge for a first playoff berth. The latest addition is former Bulls general Chris Smith, who returns from a two-season stint overseas at French club Oyonnax, crossing the Jukskei from the Pretoria side where he last played before leaving the country. Smith, a consistent kicker, had some strong performances in the blue jersey. So, the Johannesburg side will hope he can take his game to another level as they look for a flyhalf who can spearhead the team to the quarter-finals in the coming season. They have struggled for consistency in the No 10 jersey for the last couple of campaigns, with Kade Wolhuter, Gianni Lombard and Nico Steyn sharing the jersey. But none have put their hand up to claim the position, and the arrival of Smith will add to that competition. He is not the only player joining the men from Ellis Park; they also signed two wingers in Angelo Davids of the Stormers and Eduan Keyter from the Sharks. They must fill the void of Springbok Edwill van der Merwe, who has joined the Sharks. Van der Merwe, who became a Bok at the Lions, has been outstanding, and the duo will have big boots to fill. Davids, a former Blitzbok, will seek more game-time after falling out of favour in Cape Town, while Keyter will look to revive his career after a spell of unfortunate injuries while based at Kings Park. Davids played behind the likes of Seabelo Senatla, Leolin Zas, Suleiman Hartzenberg and Ben Loader, and needed this move away from the Mother City. Both wingers are deadly attackers and have a knack for finding the try-line. So, they should not take too long to adapt to the enterprising rugby that the Lions play. The Lions also announced the signing of Griquas lock Dylan Sjoblom. He will add some needed depth to the side ahead of another URC campaign, where they will look to reach the playoffs for the first time. They boast some of the most exciting players in the country, but have unfortunately not lived up to expectations over the last couple of seasons. Head coach Ivan van Rooyen will hope the strategic acquisitions can boost the side on and off the field as they use the Currie Cup to prepare for their fifth season in the European competition. Van Rooyen is under pressure, and it will likely be a non-negotiable for the side to reach the playoffs if he wants to take them forward. The Stormers, meanwhile, won their arbitration case with loose forward Ben-Jason Dixon, which will see the Springbok committed to the Cape side until 2027 at least. They also confirmed the extension of midfielder Wandisile Simelane's stay in the Cape. Dixon sought arbitration to resolve a particular clause in his contract, which runs until July 2027. 'Ben-Jason is one of the most committed rugby players around, and has been a vital cog in our team for some time. With this now settled, we know that he will continue to give everything on and off the field for us,' Stormers director of rugby John Dobson said in a statement on Friday. Dixon, currently out injured, said that with the matter now resolved, he is looking forward to making an impact on the field once again. 'I'm really grateful that both sides had the chance to bring everything to the table through arbitration and get clarity going forward. 'With this behind us, I'm looking forward to getting back to doing what I love – giving my best for the Stormers.'

BaaBaas, with ‘great players in world rugby', a good test for Boks: Rassie
The Barbarians have some hugely experienced, quality campaigners and will provide a fitting opening test for the Springboks' 2025 season, coach Rassie Erasmus said. The Boks face the BaaBaas on June 28 before lining up against Italy in back-to-back Tests in Pretoria (July 5) and Gqeberha (July 12), after which they wrap up the Incoming Series against Georgia in Mbombela (July 19). The Boks are close to being a full contingent of players after the arrival of the Bulls players, Leinster lock RG Snyman and Leicester Tigers flyhalf Handré Pollard, following their involvement in the United Rugby Championship and Gallagher Premiership finals last weekend.
