Patients who video their NHS medical treatment for TikTok or Instagram are putting themselves and others at risk, leading medics have said. The Society of Radiographers (SoR) said filming NHS staff and treatments was causing workers unnecessary anxiety when they are trying to work, while people also risk publishing other patients' medical information.
The organisation also suggested that distracting staff and making them uncomfortable may compromise the delivery of treatment. The SoR is calling for clear and widespread NHS policies that prevent patients from photographing or filming clinical procedures without permission.
Ashley d'Aquino, a therapeutic radiographer working in London, said a rising number of patients are choosing to film their own medical treatment for social media such as TikTok or Instagram. She told the SoR's Annual Delegates' Conference that she had been approached by other members of staff, in her capacity as union rep, over patients recording some of their cancer treatment.
She added: 'I had one patient whose relative started filming while I was trying to set up the treatment. It wasn't the right time – I was trying to focus on delivering the treatment. We had another member of staff who agreed to take photos for a patient.
'But when the patient handed over her phone, the member of staff saw that the patient had also been covertly recording her to publish on her cancer blog. As NHS staff, we wear name badges, so our names will be visible in any video. It makes people feel very uncomfortable and anxious.'
A radiology department assistant from the south coast was using a cannular on a cancer patient, and the patient's 19-year-old daughter started filming the procedure. 'She wanted to record the cannulation because she thought it would be entertaining on social media,' she said. 'But she didn't ask permission. In the next bay, a patient was having consent taken for a virtual colonoscopy, which is an invasive and potentially embarrassing procedure.

'That could have all been recorded on the film – including names and dates of birth. Anyone could be in the room – you don't know their personal story. There are people who come into our department who have a limited social media presence because of risks to their safety. Patients filming make them feel unsafe in their own hospital.
'I spent the weekend afterwards worrying: did I do my job properly? I know I did, but no-one's perfect all the time, and this was recorded. I don't think I slept for the whole weekend.'
The department assistant said she had also seen patients attempting to take photos of her department's scanners. 'People on social media start discussing what's going on without understanding what the scanner is or what it does,' she said. 'But they know it involves radiation. So that may create fear among people.'
Dean Rogers, SoR director of industrial strategy and member relations, said the issue affects all health workers. 'As healthcare professionals, we need to think: does that recording breach the confidentiality of other patients? Does it breach our ability to deliver care?,' he said.
'There are hospital trusts that have very good policies around patients taking photos and filming procedures. But this is something all trusts need to have in place. Patients shouldn't be filming in hospitals without staff knowledge and permission.
'Hospitals need to ensure that they meet the needs of patients while also looking after staff members' wellbeing. And, in this case, safeguarding the one simultaneously safeguards the other – allowing healthcare professionals to do their job in safety, while also protecting patients' privacy and helping them to receive the best possible care.'

Ms d'Aquino said there may be some valid reasons for patients to record medical conversations. 'Patients making audio recordings of consultations, for example, can enhance their understanding and retention of medical information,' she said.
'The difficulty is that our phones have become so much a part of our day-to-day life that recording and sharing our lives has become second nature.'

On June 15, the TikTok creator said: "When my smear test came up, I went to go and get it, and thank god I did because, when I went I tested positive for HPV. I just had some bad cells so I had to then go and get a colposcopy... and get it burnt off". She explained that she has check ups "so regularly" to "keep an eye on them," referring to the "bad cells" infected with HPV. The social media influencer spoke further about how she thinks people don't get smear tests due to embarrassment or out of fear. Speaking passionately on the topic, Grace said: "My thing is a lot of people my age... they just think it will be alright. They don't want to know what the answer is. I think it's so important to get your smear test done because 90% of the time nothing's wrong". According to Nuffield Health, one in 20 smear test "note abnormal cell changes and most of these changes won't lead to cervical cancer. But in some cases the abnormal cells will need to be removed so they can't become cancerous". She opened up in her advocacy, adding: "I'm the first one out of a lot of my friends and family to have to go back and get something done like a colposcopy, but I'd rather be told I've got something early and be able to live than, because I was too scared of catching something or the answer, catch something late and end up dying". Grace 's experience has reached over 2.2 million views on TikTok alone with many fans of the show commenting a mix of support and their own uncomfortable experiences. Unintentionally, the comment section became a forum for young and older women alike to help work past the narrative that avoiding the pain is worth the risk. One user wrote: "I won't go because I refuse to be put in pain, and yes, it is painful. When they can find less traumatising ways, I'll go". In a collective effort to convince what would be a stranger, one of 198 replies to the comment alone." Another comment read: "I don't trust doctors either but after watching my mum go through her cancer battle (bowel) - still chemo/ radiotherapy- the effects cancer has on your body, I would take a smear everyday over that. I've had smears that hurt and [were] uncomfortable and ones that were fine but it was nothing compared to seeing what someone with cancer goes through".# What is HPV and does it cause cancer? According to Cancer Research UK, HPV is a common virus that infects the skin and cells lining the inside of the body. It usually has no symptoms and for most people, will be cleared from the body without causing any problems. It's contracted through close skin-to-skin contact, typically during sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. There are different types of HPV which range from low to high risk. High risk HPV types can cause cancer if they stay in the body for a long time. Cervical cancer is often linked to HPV as it causes nearly all cases. You can get a HPV vaccination to help prevent cancer and protect against HPV. Cancer Research state that in the UK all children aged 11-13 in the UK can get the HPV vaccine. It's also available for free to people up to the age of 25 who missed their vaccine when they were offered it, men who have sex with men (up to the age of 45), and some transgender people (up to the age of 45). Safe sex, cervical screenings and stopping smoking can also reduce your risk of HPV. How to book a smear test The NHS website states that an invitation for a smear test - or cervical screening - will be sent via the NHS App, text or letter when it's time to book for you to book an appointment once your 25th birthday has passed, and then every three years. Within the invitation, you will receive instructions on where and how to book, though most screenings are done by female nurses and doctors at your GP surgery, says the NHS website. If you have missed your last screening, there is no need to wait for an invitation. To book an appointment, the NHS advise you call your GP or arrange a screening online. There is also the option of booking at your local sexual health clinic or walk-in centre, however this is only available in some parts of England so it's important to check. Smear tests are best to have done when you are not experiencing your menstrual period so try to avoid the two days before and after you're expected to bleed, advises the NHS. Note that before being tested, you should avoid the use of any vaginal medicines, lubricants or creams for at least two days before your screening as they can affect the results.

My doctor used a dirty needle during common procedure - it left me with agonising 'suicide disease'
A former primary school teacher has been left with a rare condition dubbed 'suicide disease' after a doctor re-used a dirty needle during a common procedure. Amy Pohl, now 32, from Warwickshire, visited her GP for help with a cough that doctors suspected was a respiratory infection, and referred her to the local hospital. Ms Pohl should have made a full recovery following a course of steroids to help reduce the swelling in her airways. However, the hospital medic failed to properly insert a cannula—a thin tube inserted into the vein to administer the medication— leading to an infection. The infection was supposedly caused by a doctor incorrectly using the same needle in both her arms, without properly sterilising the skin, after numerous failed attempts to insert the tube. Ms Pohl believes this infection eventually triggered a debilitating condition that causes agonising pain in the limbs. Called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), the problem is the body's over-reaction to an injury, and can also cause the hands, feet and legs to seize up and become extremely swollen. The medics' oversight left Ms Pohl partially paralysed and in excruciating pain. Ms Pohl said the excruciating pain she endured felt like she was being 'stabbed by a hundred shards of burning glass', as doctors scrambled for answers. Recalling the initial problem that led her to seek help in November 2017, Ms Pohl said she put her sore throat down to end of term exhaustion. But a GP eventually diagnosed croup—an infection that usually affects children, causing a distinct 'barking' cough. Croup is usually caused by a contagious virus such as parainfluenza, which is spread through contaminated air droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. When Ms Pohl arrived at hospital, doctors performed an endoscopy—where a camera is passed up the nose and down the throat—to better visualise the harm caused by the infection. Unfortunately Ms Pohl suffered a severe allergic reaction to the anesthetising spray they had used to numb the area, which led to an admission to a high dependency unit. Not long after her admission, Ms Pohl said her doctor attempted to insert a cannula into her arm to administer medication directly into her bloodstream to treat the infection. 'The doctor only brought one cannula into the room,' Ms Pohl recalled in a YouTube video. 'He put the needle into my arm and then without cleaning the skin or the needle he tried my wrist. 'His whole mask was steaming up and my dad said to him "shouldn't you be using a new needle?" He shouted at my dad and told him to leave the room. 'Then he went over to the other arm and that's when he put it into my hand. And he tried and tried and tried. Because of all that, I developed an infection.' 'The chance of someone getting an infection if a needle is reused in their own body is really slim', she said, 'but it happens that I was that one in a million'. Ms Pohl's hand and wrist then began to swell. The pain got so bad that it would radiate up her arm and into her abdomen, stopping her from eating. Unbeknown to both her and her doctors at the time, she was experiencing the onset of CRPS. According to the NHS, the skin of the affected body part can become so sensitive that even a slight touch or change in temperature can cause intense pain. Affected areas can also become swollen, stiff or undergo fluctuating changes in colour or temperature. 'No matter how many weeks went by after the surgeries, my hand was just getting worse not better,' Ms Pohl recalled in an Instagram video. Ms Pohl eventually diagnosed with CRPS in 2018 and has since been campaigning on social media to raise better awareness for the condition, resolved to 'stop fighting [herself] and start fighting for [herself]'. The content creator, who has 3.7million followers on TikTok now makes upbeat videos about her diagnoses, in a bid to spread awareness about the dangers of re-using needles. Through an extensive physiotherapy regime, Ms Pohl now has a better range of movement in her hand and wrist, and is starting to gain back her independence. According to the NHS, while the condition is usually triggered by an injury, the resulting pain can last for years. In addition to chronic pain, CRPS can also cause a range of other symptoms including strange sensations in the affected limb—almost as if it doesn't belong to the rest of the body—joint stiffness and swelling, tremors and muscle spasms and insomnia. In some cases, it can even cause the muscles to waste away, restricting suffers range of movement until they can no longer live unassisted. The prevalence of the condition is still unclear, however it is estimated that up to 3,800 people in the UK develop CRPS each year.

Doctor Scott Walker took to TikTok to deliver his skin protection tips as Britain braces itself for the heatwave With a practical demonstration using a glass, he illustrated just how much sunscreen is essential for a day at the beach: "This is how much sunscreen is needed to cover you body on a typical beach day - it's an entire shot glass full, but let's be honest - do you ever apply that much?" Dr Walker then confessed that the reality is most people skimp on their sunscreen, meaning they don't get the full benefits advertised on the bottle. "Not a lot of people do, which is why the SPF [sun protection factor] advertised on the bottle is not what we are really getting," he remarked. "Nobody applies enough, and in fact this was proven in a real life study at a ski resort where they gave skiers SPF50 or SPF100 and told them to use it how they normally would." The findings of the study revealed that it was more common for individuals using SPF50 to suffer from sunburn. Dr Walker shared the lessons learnt: "So, we have learned a couple of things here," he reiterated. "One - we need to be applying more sunscreen. And two - higher SPF numbers can be beneficial, especially on those days we're going to be outside all day." Dr Walker closed with a further piece of advice, stating: "Sunscreen isn't perfect! Remember the number one line of defence is physical sun protection - seeking shade and UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) clothing!". Writing in response, user shared: "Every one I know uses SPF20 maybe 30 if they don't have anything else, but my Scandinavian friend only uses 50 or above regardless. I'd rather be ghostly pale and comfortable instead of red and uncomfortable." Another chimed in: "That is why I buy cheap. The supermarket brand, the one for atopic skin (normally unscented) and use the same for face and body." A third person offered their insight: "It's one reason I get a stronger sunscreen than I need. If I don't use enough I'll get the strength I need (and if I can't go stronger I'll make sure to use enough)." Whilst a fourth person revealed their sun protection strategy: "And we're supposed to reapply that much every two hours if where gonna be out in the sun all day like the beach. Which almost nobody does, myself included - I forget, though I do bring shade and stay under it most of the time." According to the NHS, meanwhile, adults should aim to apply around six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen if you're covering your entire body. "If sunscreen is applied too thinly, the amount of protection it gives is reduced," the NHS notes. "If you're worried you might not be applying enough SPF30, you could use a sunscreen with a higher SPF." The advice continues: "If you plan to be out in the sun long enough to risk burning, sunscreen needs to be applied twice: 30 minutes before going out just before going out Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears, and head if you have thinning or no hair, but a wide-brimmed hat is better. "Sunscreen needs to be reapplied liberally and frequently, and according to the manufacturer's instructions. This includes applying it straight after you have been in water, even if it's "water resistant", and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. "It's also recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, as the sun can dry it off your skin."
