BYD Zhengzhou Vessel
THE expansion of Malaysia's electric vehicle (EV) sector received a major boost with the arrival of BYD Zhengzhou, a purpose-built roll-on/roll-off (Roro) carrier vessel, at North Port, Port Klang. The vessel, which is part of BYD's growing maritime fleet, delivered a new batch of fully-built EVs for Malaysian consumers, further solidifying BYD's strategic commitment to the local market.
The BYD Zhengzhou, boasting a 7,000-unit vehicle capacity, is the seventh ship in BYD's dedicated fleet and marks the brand's first direct maritime delivery to Southeast Asia. In addition to Malaysia, the vessel is also scheduled to distribute EV units to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore before making its final stop in Thailand and returning to China.
The deployment of the Zhengzhou is a significant demonstration of BYD's investment in securing its global logistics infrastructure. By operating its own fleet, the company reduces dependence on third-party shipping providers, enabling tighter control over delivery timelines and supply chain coordination, an increasingly critical factor as China continues to dominate global EV exports.
Sime Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, welcomed the arrival as a major milestone. Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors, Southeast Asia, stated that the enhanced delivery framework made possible by BYD's carrier fleet ensures faster fulfilment and improved customer satisfaction in Malaysia. He emphasised that this strategic development reflects not only confidence in the Malaysian market but also a shared ambition to transform the country into a pivotal EV hub in the region.
The partnership between BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors is designed to address surging demand by laying down a reliable foundation for expansion. Gan affirmed that the groundwork is being laid for increased volumes, underpinned by a robust ecosystem of retail networks, after-sales support, and consumer education, all of which are aimed at supporting the nation's transition to sustainable mobility.
Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd, explained that the BYD Zhengzhou serves as a key asset in strengthening the company's logistical capabilities across Asia Pacific. He noted that by investing in its own specialised fleet, BYD is able to meet regional demand with greater efficiency, reliability, and scalability. The company's adoption of the RORO shipping method, where vehicles are driven directly on and off the ship, brings notable advantages in time and cost savings compared to traditional container shipping.
As the competition in EV exports intensifies, BYD's control over its transport fleet provides a strategic edge. With growing interest in electric vehicles across Southeast Asia, Zhao underscored that Malaysia is set to play a central role in BYD's broader regional ambitions.
The latest shipment further deepens BYD's presence in the country, which is currently supported by over 35 retail outlets nationwide. The company and Sime Motors have jointly set a target of reaching 60 outlets by the end of 2026, signalling their long-term commitment to advancing electric mobility in Malaysia.
With the arrival of BYD Zhengzhou, the collaboration between BYD and Sime Motors enters a new phase, one defined by logistical strength, rapid deployment capabilities, and an unrelenting focus on delivering smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable vehicles to Malaysian roads.

Takaful Malaysia's new deal offers earnings visibility

PETALING JAYA: Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Bhd 's (Takaful Malaysia) recent deal with RHB Islamic Bank Bhd provides long-term earnings visibility and stability of contributions for the former, analysts say. Takaful Malaysia signed two new 20-year exclusive bancatakaful service agreements with RHB Islamic, effective from Aug 1, one for family takaful and another for general takaful products. The deal supports Takaful Malaysia's embedded value growth and broadens its bank-partner network, currently at 17. It also underscores Takaful Malaysia's dominant position in Malaysia's credit protection takaful segment, said CIMB Research. Takaful Malaysia's 20-year service agreement with RHB Islamic Bank Bhd further strengthens the company's future earnings base, particularly from credit-related takaful products such as mortgage reducing term takaful and personal-financing protection. These segments currently contribute about 50% to 60% of Takaful Malaysia's overall earnings and are predominantly driven by bancatakaful partnerships. The remaining portion is largely supported by coverage for civil-servant loans under the Public Sector Home Financing Board scheme. Takaful Malaysia underwrites the largest credit protection portfolio in the Malaysian market, maintaining its leading position with a 26% market share. The new agreement marks a renewal of the company's long-standing bancatakaful partnership with RHB Islamic, which began in 2015. The initial five-year agreement from 2015 to 2020 and the first renewal on Aug 1, 2020 to July this year have now been superseded by a longer, 20-year exclusivity period, reflecting a deepening of the strategic relationship CIMB Research views this long-term renewal as a strategic positive for Takaful Malaysia as RHB Islamic is one of the company's top five bancatakaful issuers, given the latter's position as a preferred partner, contributing about 10% of total family takaful contributions. Maintaining the partnership ensures continuity of business from a meaningful channel. CIMB Research maintained its earnings per share forecasts for Takaful Malaysia and its 'buy' call on the stock with a target price of RM4.60 a share. At the current price, CIMB Research said it believes Takaful Malaysia is trading at an attractive price-to-book ratio for next year of 1.2 times, which is about 40% below the five-year mean of two times. CIMB Research said it believes the discount is unjustified given Takaful Malaysia's superior return on equity of 19%, which is about 2.2 to 6.8 percentage points higher than that of listed peers such as LPI Capital Bhd and Allianz Malaysia Bhd , and the strong growth in takaful contributions.

Penang plans new tuna port to boost landings

BUTTERWORTH: Penang plans to build a new tuna and deep-sea fishing port in the state, which meets international standards, to increase tuna landings. State agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman, Fahmi Zainol said the government has identified an area in Bagan Ajam for the new tuna port and discussions are already underway. "The state has earmarked land in Bagan Ajam for the development of the new port, with an estimated development budget of RM150mil to RM300mil. We are currently in talks with several investors for funding," he said. He added that, based on the timeline, the port could be completed within one-and-a-half to two years, pending technical approval from the district land office and other relevant agencies, as well as private sector allocation. "We hope the new port can revive the glory days of Penang's tuna industry, much like the 1990s," he said on Sunday (Aug 10). Fahmi highlighted several benefits of the new port, including its exclusive focus on tuna fishing, meaning tuna vessels will not have to compete for docking space with commercial ships. The port will also offer lower charges, as it will not operate on a commercial basis. Regarding competition, he said that tuna ships would not need to compete for docking space because the new port would be dedicated solely to tuna landings. It is expected to attract foreign tuna ships due to its user-friendly facilities. The new port will meet European Union (EU) standards and will include special facilities tailored specifically for tuna fishing, unlike existing ports, which offer general facilities and lack focus on tuna landings. "According to preliminary data from the Malaysian Fisheries Department, the total tuna landings in Penang last year were 431,000kg, valued at RM7.758mil. The main landing point is currently the Butterworth deep-water wharf," Fahmi said. He also noted that Malaysian vessels had landed tuna in Mauritius last year, with a total of 4,295,758kg of tuna, including 3,749,478kg from local vessels. So far this year, the total tuna landings in Penang, including foreign vessels, have reached 1,445,120kg, with an estimated value of RM26mil. Fahmi believes that with the dedicated tuna port in Bagan Ajam, tuna landings could increase by 30 to 50 per cent within five years of its operation. He also envisions Penang becoming a tuna processing hub, where foreign vessels can land their catch for processing before exporting it to Taiwan or Japan. - Bernama

Bangladesh chief advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to undertake official visit to Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama): Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from Monday until Wednesday (Aug 11 to Aug 13, 2025), at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement on Sunday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said the visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, and several advisors and senior government officials will accompany Yunus. The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said that Yunus will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex on Aug 12, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister. "Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence. "The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest,' the statement said. During the visit, Yunus and Anwar will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of defence, energy, strategic and international studies, capacity building in semiconductors, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed in the areas of diplomatic training and higher education. The ministry said in honour of Yunus and his delegation, the Prime Minister will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex. It said that on Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Chief Advisor will also attend a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion), an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. It said the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. - Bernama
