Social media reacts to report of Dolphins' Jonnu Smith trade talks
The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources. Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this… pic.twitter.com/t4G8DqsF6s — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 29, 2025
Most of the drama surrounding the Miami Dolphins this month has revolved around the impending trade of Jalen Ramsey, but ESPN's Adam Schefter sent waves throughout social media on Thursday. Schefter reported that the Dolphins have spoken with the Pittsburgh Steelers as potential trade partners for tight end Jonnu Smith.
Schefter explained that Smith had expressed interest in a reworked deal in the final year of his two-year contract he signed with the Dolphins last offseason. However, the report also indicated that Smith would prefer to stay in Miami under a potentially reworked deal.
Last season, Smith broke the three major positional franchise records for tight ends in receptions (88), receiving yardage (884), as well as touchdowns (8) and has become a fan favorite and team leader.
Here's a sampling of the reaction to the news Thursday:
IMO: Jonnu Smith is basically gone from the Miami Dolphins. There's no way to come back from the leak about a trade with the Steelers. Once the toothpaste is out of the tube there's no way to put it back in. — Fins Sammy (@FinsSammy) May 29, 2025
Tua 🤝 Jonnu Smith📈
Miami might want to keep this duo intact.
Last season:
82% comp rate (highest QB-TE duo)
124.1 passer rating, 5 TDs, 0 INTs
44.8 EPA (team lead, 4th among QB-TE duos)
Jonnu should be extended rather than traded. 🤞🏾🔥 — LaQuan Jones (@RealDealFantasy) May 29, 2025
• Jalen Ramsey - traded.
• Jonnu Smith - traded.
• Raheem Mostert - cut.
• Jevon Holland - gone.
• Calais Campbell - gone.
• Tyreek Hill - STAYS.

Jonnu Smith was arguably the most underrated tight end in football last season 👀
88 receptions
884 yards
8 TDs
A legit weapon. pic.twitter.com/v2CwOqyMdM — DraftKings Network (@DKNetwork) May 29, 2025
• 4th in NFL receiving yards among TEs last season
•Tied 2nd in TDs by a TE
•Scored 48 points — more than Waddle or Hill
•Set Dolphins TE single-season franchise record: 88 catches, 884 yards, 8 TDs
But yeah, let's trade him. 🤦🏻‍♀️ pic.twitter.com/7EHNJmkEJi — Marisa Marino (@mustbemarisa87) May 29, 2025
Jonnu Smith was the Dolphins' No. 1 target down the stretch last season— it would be a major step back if Miami doesn't retain him https://t.co/KooPKDgCNA — Marcel Louis-Jacques (@Marcel_LJ) May 29, 2025
Passing on Tyler Warren (and not drafting any other TE) only to (potentially) trade Jonnu Smith (our 5th ranked TE last year) would be classic Dolphins
FWIW, Julian Hill was the our lowest graded TE in the NFL last year at 37.2 overall#GoPhins https://t.co/0roX0wBj7n — Ryan Smith (@PFF_RyanSmith) May 29, 2025
Jonnu Smith is a great dude
It's one thing when malcontents are unhappy but this one may sting even more in Miami Gardens
Hopefully they just work new deal https://t.co/CYz81oR1Pw — Joe Schad (@schadjoe) May 29, 2025
There is no reason for the Dolphins to trade Jonnu Smith if he wants to stay in Miami https://t.co/rHEqx6xqQl — Jake (@FinsCentral) May 29, 2025
Pittsburgh Steelers barely have 5 Wr's but want 7 TE's...bruh Jonnu Smith is not the play pic.twitter.com/yE2HdLyujb — Steelers Report (@SteelersReport7) May 29, 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers reached out to fans upset that Donald Trump received a jersey at a rally

Pittsburgh Steelers legend Rocky Bleier called an audible when he presented President Donald Trump with a Steelers jersey with the No. 47 during a rally in western Pennsylvania last week. Not everyone was thrilled about it. Several fans emailed the team expressing their anger at the gesture, which was not authorized directly by the team. The club responded to those who reached out, writing that the viewpoints of current and former players do not necessarily reflect the view of the organization. Trump was joined on stage at the rally to announce he was doubling tariffs on imported steel by 50% by quarterback Mason Rudolph and safety Myles Killebrew. Rudolph said he saw some of the blowback but did not take it personally. 'That's the nature of social media,' Rudolph said Tuesday after the Steelers wrapped up a voluntary team workout. 'That's the nature of why America is so great. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Speech is free. Par for the course.' Bleier, Rudolph and Killebrew aren't the only people with ties to the Steelers who have appeared with Trump. Former stars Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell met Trump when he was stumping in western Pennsylvania ahead of the 2024 election. Former Steelers owner and Hall of Famer Dan Rooney served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 2009-12 during Barack Obama's first term. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. 'I'm game': Alberta Premier Smith invites Prime Minister Carney to Oilers game

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she has invited Prime Minister Mark Carney to watch an Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup final game. Speaking to The Canadian Press in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Smith said she's waiting to see if Carney will join her for Game 5, which could take place next weekend ahead of the G7 conference in Kananaskis, Alta. Carney, who grew up in Edmonton, made his allegiance to the home team clear when he stopped at Rogers Place to skate with the Oilers in March. That was his first visit to the city after being sworn in as Liberal leader, replacing Justin Trudeau. "I am pleased to see that we at least have a prime minister who knows what team to root for," Smith said. "I'm game. We'll see if we can go together." The Prime Minister's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. In response to a request for further details, Smith's press secretary Sam Blackett offered a brief statement. "Let's see if the series goes to five games first," he said. It would be the first game Smith has publicly acknowledged planning to attend during this year's Oilers NHL playoff run. Last year, the premier and some of her cabinet members faced criticism for accepting free luxury box tickets to playoff games. At the time, Smith defended their attendance, saying Albertans expect their elected representatives to support the team. WATCH| Canada cheers for Edmonton as the Oilers take Game 1 over Panthers: While Smith said the tickets she accepted were courtesy of a provincial Crown corporation, a few ministers were given tickets by a private businessman whose contracts with the Alberta government are now part of multiple broader investigations into government health-care contracts. The premier has said that she and her ministers' moves were above board, and broke no ethics rules. Subsequent allegations of bloated sweetheart deals from the former head of Alberta Health Services sparked investigations from the RCMP, Alberta's auditor general and a former Manitoba judge hired by the government. Peter Guthrie ultimately resigned from cabinet as infrastructure minister over the government's handling of the contract scandal, and he was later booted from the United Conservative caucus altogether over his criticism. Smith has denied any wrongdoing, insisting her government is fully co-operating with all investigations.

Steelers unlikely to trade for ex-Patriots pass catcher despite talks (report)

Apparently, Jonnu Smith won't be reuniting with Arthur Smith for a third stint. Though the Steelers reportedly engaged in trade talks with the Dolphins for the Pro Bowl tight end, ESPN reports a deal is unlikely to materialize. Arthur Smith is Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, and Jonnu Smith played in his offenses in both Tennessee (2019-20) and Atlanta (2023). Advertisement A bust in New England, Jonnu Smith delivered an outstanding year with the Dolphins last season, catching 88 passes for 884 yards, both easily career highs. He also hauled in eight touchdown passes and was named to his first Pro Bowl. Given his production, Smith wants to renegotiate his Dolphins contract that will pay him $4.8 million this season, per ESPN. In an appearance on WSVN-TV, Smith's agent Drew Rosenhaus was adamant that the tight end wanted to keep playing for the Dolphins. 'Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That's his first choice,' Rosenhaus said (via the Miami Herald). 'This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year. It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end... He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team's single Pro Bowl player. He's an incredibly valuable part of this team.' Smith was a big ticket Patriots free agent signing in the 2021 offseason, inking a four-year, $50 million deal, but things never materialized for him in New England's offense. Smith never hit 30 receptions nor 300 receiving yards in a season and only caught one touchdown pass in his two years with the Patriots. In the spring of 2023, Bill Belichick traded him to Atlanta for a seventh-round pick. More Patriots Content Read the original article on MassLive.
