NDP2025: Guide to National Day in Singapore

Time Out09-07-2025
A good hangover from the Covid-19 pandemic days is that NDP celebrations now spill over to the heartlands. On August 10, you and your family can enjoy celebrations at the open fields beside these locations:
Bishan Junction 8
One Punggol
FutsalArena @ Yishun
Wisma Geylang Serai
Bukit Combak ActiveSG Stadium
Each of the five districts will have a unique theme. Look forward to the mobile column of vehicles from the SAF and Home Team, the Red Lions descent into the Bishan heartlands site at 4pm, and the flypast of four F-16s fighters from 6pm to 6.30pm. There will also be plenty of carnival games to keep families entertained. You must pick up a ticket

England hero Russo honoured by mural after Lionesses' historic triumph

Bearsted FC, in Maidstone, which received £10,000 of funding from The National Lottery during Covid, saw the new mural unveiled, recognising Russo and the Lionesses' unprecedented achievement of winning back-to-back Euros titles and reaching the last three major international finals. Russo scored a crucial equaliser to help England retain their European crown against Spain, with the Lionesses winning 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Over the last 30 years, the National Lottery has invested more than £6 billion into grassroots sport – including changing the game for women and girls' football across the UK. In attendance at the mural unveiling Bearsted FC was England legend and former record cap holder Rachel Yankey, who said: 'I'm hugely proud of Alessia. I was really pleased yesterday that she got the goal that brought us back into the game. It was a fantastic header and shows you just what sort of a striker she is. 'Looking at this mural, every kid that comes out of Bearsted FC will see it and with it being a homegrown player, people feel more connected, because it was someone local that's gone on to be a star, and they might think, 'if they can do it, then I can do it'. It makes it even more powerful.' The mural was funded by the National Lottery, who also gave the club £10,000 during the Covid-19 pandemic which was imperative to their survival. Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength and now has five girls' teams within its ranks, up from zero in 2021. Bearsted chair Jamie Houston, who has been in the role six years, was grateful for the support the club had received from the organisation. (Image: Getty Images for The National Lottery) 'The National Lottery helped us back in COVID times, it was a tough time for the club,' the 53-year-old explained. 'They stepped up with a grant and it was survival for us; it was so important. Now they've stepped forward again. What a lovely thing to do. 'Girls now all want to be the next Alessia Russo and it's great they've got a role model they can relate to. We've got this picture on the side of our clubhouse now which we can keep forever. It's an amazing picture and the under-8 girls have been absolutely loving it too. It's so exciting. To me, that's what makes it all worthwhile, to see big smiles on their little faces, it's amazing.' 'It's been so important. We've needed that Lottery investment to make sure that we keep sport going for kids and that they have safe spaces to play and thrive because everybody on that pitch yesterday would have started somewhere," added Yankey. 'I feel proud that actually the visibility of the game is really being thought about and that our current role models are being used to inspire the next generation.'

England hero Russo honoured by mural after Lionesses' historic triumph

The National Lottery has honoured England hero Alessia Russo by unveiling a mural at Bearsted FC, the grassroots club she played for growing up after starring in the Lionesses' historic Euros victory. Lioness boss Sarina Wiegman's Euros breakdown after devastating family loss

Sarina Weigman has scored her third back to back victory in the Euros, and her second managing England, but she's had some heartbreaking difficulties during her path to success England manager Sarina Wiegman has led the Lionesses to victory in the Euros 2025, making the Lionesses back-to-back European champions. ‌ For the last three Women's Euros, Sarina has been at the helm of the winning team, but the legendary football manager has suffered some heartbreaking setbacks in her personal life, whilst going from strength to strength professionally. ‌ Sarina took over managing the England Women's team in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and after initially considering commuting for the top job from her home country of the Netherlands, she realised she would have to move, bringing her whole family to the UK. ‌ Sarina Wiegman's three-word conclusion says it all after Lionesses' Euro 2025 success Inside England Lionesses' 4am afterparty celebrations: Pizza, champagne and karaoke A personal tragedy struck only a couple of years into Sarina's time in Britain. Her sister, Diana, had been diagnosed with cancer in 2021 - and over the following year got increasingly ill. She was heartbreakingly never able to travel to England to see Sarina in action. In May 2022, the family was given the tragic news that Diana did not have much time left, and Sarina told the Guardian that despite the heartbreaking update, "We made that such a valuable month." ‌ Diana died just over a month before the Women's Euros 2022 began, and Sarina revealed that she had support from throughout the Football Association to get her through such a tough time, explaining that during the tournament she felt incredibly connected to her late sister, who she knew would have wanted her to give the Euros everything she could. However, the night before the final against Germany, the massive loss she had suffered suddenly hit Sarina hard and she broke down. ‌ "We were preparing and all of a sudden it hit me: 'OK, this is not what I want.' That's completely normal, it's had such an impact and is so emotional," Sarina said. However, she turned to the support system around her to make sure that she got through the unbelievably difficult moment. "During that whole period, I knew I could talk to anyone, but especially Kate Hays, our sports psychologist. I would just sit down with her and talk about it and, when you talk about it, it's kind of a relief. So we did that the day before the final and actually when we played the final I was really happy in the moment and I didn't have to cry, so that was settled." When the Lionesses won the match, Sarina was seen kissing the bracelet she wore and walking onto the pitch to celebrate with her players - the bracelet had once belonged to her sister, and the manager wore it as a tribute to Diana, keeping her close throughout.
