
UAE: After losing first baby to rare genetic disorder, Dubai couple welcomes miracle child via IVF
However, their happiness was short-lived as one of the several tests during pregnancy revealed that the foetus was affected by Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS). The couple's first child did not survive.
Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes excessive growth in different body parts. Babies born with BWS are often larger than usual, and some may experience disproportionate growth on one side of the body, a condition known as hemihyperplasia.
Although children affected by BWS may grow taller than their peers, the condition typically slows down by age 8, and adult height tends to be normal. Despite the promising recovery with age, BWS increases the risk of childhood cancers, making it a difficult condition for parents.
Aysha and Ahmed, originally from Jordan and long-time residents of Dubai, were heartbroken after losing their first child. But they were determined not to let the condition affect their future children.
'We learned that one of us carried the genetic mutation for BWS. We really wanted a healthy pregnancy and child, so we decided to go for in vitro fertilisation (IVF),' said Aysha.
After undergoing IVF treatment, Aysha and Ahmed were able to welcome a healthy baby boy. Their son was free from the genetic disorder thanks to advanced fertility treatments and genetic testing. "We are very happy that our son is healthy and disease-free," said the mother.
The couple consulted doctors at Orchid Fertility Clinic, where the team used Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Diseases (PGT-M) to prevent the hereditary condition from being passed down.
Dr Dimitrios Kafetzis, the medical director at Orchid Fertility, explained the challenges the couple faced, including advanced maternal age and a history of miscarriages. 'Our team employed a combination of advanced genetic screening and IVF techniques to help the couple conceive a healthy child while minimising the risk of passing on BWS,' said Dr Kafetzis.
The IVF process began with ovarian stimulation over four cycles, resulting in the retrieval of 57 mature eggs. These eggs were fertilised via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and 41 embryos developed. 'Genetic testing identified seven embryos that were free of the BWS mutation, and further screening for chromosomal abnormalities narrowed the selection down to two viable embryos, one of which was successfully implanted,' said Dr Kafetzis.
'The pregnancy progressed well, and the baby was born healthy,' said Maria Banti, lab director at Orchid Fertility. 'This case demonstrates the potential of reproductive genetics in preventing inherited conditions and ensuring better outcomes for families facing genetic challenges.'
Now, the couple is determined to expand their family. They have embarked on their second round of IVF, hopeful that they will be blessed with another child free from genetic disorders.

Yet we had to act,' said Dr. Johns Shaji Mathew, Abdominal Transplant and Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgeon at BMC. Due to his critical condition, an urgent liver transplant became the only option. To avoid delays, the family sought a living donor. Ms. Haifaa, Ahmed's aunt and the wife of his father's brother, stepped forward and was found to be a perfect match. 'I still remember the pain when we lost our first son to liver disease. When we heard our second son had a similar problem, I thought this was our destiny. But the doctors at BMC gave us new hope. And my sister-in-law gave us life again,' said Yahya. 'I read everything I could find about organ donation. I realized that donating part of my liver could save his life, and I knew I had to do it. It is a bond that nothing in this world can break,' said Ahmed's aunt. A Complex Procedure The transplant took place on April 4, 2025. Led by Dr. Gourab Sen, Director – Transplant Surgery, Burjeel Abdominal Multi-Organ Transplant Program, and Dr. Johns Shaji Mathew, the surgical team prepared a mono-segment graft from the donor's liver to fit the infant's small abdominal cavity. Pediatric anesthesia was managed by Dr. Ramamurthy Baskaran, Division Chair of Anesthesia, along with Dr. George Jacob and Dr. Anshu S. Postoperative care was led by Dr. Kesava Ramakrishnan, Consultant, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and his team. 'This was a precision operation that lasted 12 hours, including the donor and the recipient surgery. We used a mono-segment graft, a tiny part of the donor's liver, shaped exactly to fit the baby's anatomy. In an infant this small, every structure is delicate beyond imagination, each vessel was thinner than a matchstick, and the margin for error was virtually zero,' said Dr. Gourab. Following the operation, Ahmed was extubated soon, began feeding within days, and showed excellent liver function. Pediatric intensivists, gastroenterologists, dietitians, radiologists, and rehabilitation specialists supported his recovery. He will continue to receive specialized nutritional support, immune monitoring, and family counseling under BMC's long-term care program. 'My baby's recovery is nothing short of a miracle. Aunt's heroic donation saves nephew as UAE doctors perform youngest infant liver transplant
A five-month old 4.4-kilogramme Emirati boy, stricken with a rare unpreventable recessive X disorder, and the youngest recipient of a donated liver in the UAE, courtesy of his 37-year-old paternal aunt, shall now be on lifelong monitoring and treatment. Fifth child Ahmed Al Yassi is recuperating at the Burjeel Medical City-Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (BMC-PICU) since his April 4, 2025 12-hour ultra-delicate transplantation. His giant strength, and his family's and the medical team's indefatigability, serve as an inspiring testimony for the August 13 'World Organ Donation Day." The WODD 2025 theme is 'Answering the Call,' for the continuous correct information dissemination on the necessity to grant one's organ/s to save lives. In the UAE, since 2017, is the Ministry of Health and Prevention-spearheaded National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues-Hayat Programme. According to a press statement, quoting undersecretary, Dr. Mohammed Salim Al Olama, it has been boosted with advanced digital solutions and artificial intelligence that guarantees transparency and efficiency at every stage of organ donation and transplantation process. Its website as of 4:30 p.m. of August 13 had '37,298 registered donors.' From a press statement quoting Department of Health-Abu Dhabi undersecretary Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, 1,380 transplantations, through the Hayat Programme, were carried out from 2017 to 2024. 'Ahmed will be regularly supervised by liver and genetics specialists for ongoing evaluation,' added Mathew, among the multi-disciplinary team members, led by Burjeel Abdominal Multi-Organ Transplant Programme-Transplant Surgery director Dr. Gourab Sen. The other on-case Transplant Team were Anaesthesia Division chairperson Dr. Ramamurthy Baskaran and specialists Dr. George Jacob and Dr. Anshu S., and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) consultant Dr. Kesava Ramakrishnan. Ahmed has so far become the 31st survivor. There are 30 in other countries. The oldest patient is age 67. ATP6AP1-CDG 'age onset' range from the mother's pregnancy to age two, notes the Orphanet Knowledge on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs. From the FCDG, patients 'may have variable degree of liver dysfunction and immunodeficiency with recurrent infections.' Impaired-ness include developmental delays; abnormal body movement; gastrointestinal, urinary and genital problems; congenital heart defects and blood syndromes. So far, the solution is 'liver transplantation which has been successful in patients with severe liver failure.' Mathew said decreased transmission would only be via 'genetic screening and pre-marital genetic counselling to identify carriers and inform reproductive decisions for families with a known history.' Ahmed's family history has 'his grandfather passed on in 2010 due to a liver disease.'
