Three men arrested for stealing electricity for bitcoin mining
JOHOR BAHRU: Three men, 40 to 48, have been arrested for stealing electricity for bitcoin mining activities, causing losses of up to RM1.28 million.
Johor police chief Datuk M Kumar said the three, who were part of a syndicate, were arrested in an operation conducted with the cooperation of the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) on April 22 and 23.
The team also seized 87 Bitcoin mining rigs worth RM217,500 in nine raids on premises around Johor Bahru, Seri Alam, Kulai, Segamat and Tangkak
'Various mobile phones, laptops, routers and several keys were also seized. The group targets residential areas and shoplots as operation areas.
'Electricity theft caused TNB to suffer losses of RM1,289,371.86,' he said in a statement today, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

KUALA LUMPUR: A former registrar of a private university claimed trial at the Sessions Court today to 36 charges of falsifying authorisation letters with the intention of cheating the Perlis-based educational institution out of RM826,481.29 between 2022 and 2023. The accused, Mohd Fairuz Al-Fatah Badarudin, 40, pleaded not guilty to each charge when they were read out before judge Suzana Hussin. The father of 10-year-old twins is alleged to have committed the offences at a bank in Jalan Raja Chulan between June 2022 and July 2023. He is charged under Section 468 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid offered bail of RM100,000 in one surety for all charges. In mitigation, National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer G. Sivajothi Pillai appealed for a lower bail amount. "He is currently employed as a human resources lecturer earning RM2,600 per month. "His wife, aged 40, sustained a broken leg in an accident and relies on a walking stick. She will act as his bailor. The family can only afford RM10,000 bail. "He had contributed significantly during his tenure at the previous university. We urge the court to consider his financial situation in determining the bail amount," she said. Fairuz, who stood in the dock, also made a personal plea. "I am the sole breadwinner for my family. I have just secured a stable, albeit low-paying, job. "My wife is unemployed and still undergoing treatment for her injury. "I have cooperated fully with the authorities from the start. I am currently on RM10,000 bail under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission," he said. Suzana set bail at RM15,000 in one surety and ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court until the case is concluded. Mention was fixed for July 17.

Fama employee fined RM10,000 for offensive post on X
MELAKA:A staff member of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here Wednesday (June 11) after pleading guilty to making an offensive post on the social media site X, two years ago. Judge Haderiah Siri meted out the fine, in default six months in jail, on Adi Ariff Ahmad, 51. The man was charged with improper use of network facilities by making and initiating the transmission of an offensive post, via the X account of "Senatorrr Antonio Samad" with intent to annoy others at 11.33am on Oct 11, 2023. The post was seen at 5pm on Oct 11, 2023, at the address JB 3831, Jalan Kelubi Damai 1, Taman Kelubi Damai, Jasin. The charge was framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same act and provides a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or a maximum imprisonment of one year or both and may also be fined a further RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. In mitigation, Adi Ariff, unrepresented, said he was supporting four school-going children and a mother, who is not well. Prosecuting Officer Nazrul Nizam Mohd Zameri, from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), appeared for the prosecution. - Bernama
