Police track down cable theft suspect, seize vehicle in Sungai Petani
GEORGE TOWN: A swift police operation to track down a suspect involved in the theft of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) cables led to the seizure of a pickup truck in the Permata Hill Park residential area in Bedong, Sungai Petani, Kedah, early this morning. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred at around 3.44am when police received information about a cable theft at Flat Taman Nusantara here. "A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene and found that the vehicle, believed to have been used by the suspect, had fled towards Lebuhraya Tun Lim Chong Eu. "A patrol car managed to locate and pursue the suspect's vehicle from the entry ramp of the first Penang Bridge heading towards Seberang Prai, before the suspect accelerated onto the North-South Expressway heading north," he said in a statement today. Abdul Rozak said police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect refused to comply and continued to flee. "The suspect eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch beside the Permata Hill Park residential area in Bedong. "The suspect then fled into a nearby forested area. "An inspection of the vehicle found several tools believed to have been used to cut cables, as well as several cut cables in the back of the vehicle," he added. Abdul Rozak said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. Police are actively tracking down the suspect.

EDUCATING YOUTH, ENERGISING THE FUTURE
ARE lights left gleaming in empty rooms? Do devices remain plugged in long after they are charged? These are just a couple of the wasteful and habitual behaviours that many still practise today, despite the widespread shift to sustainable narratives that have become prevalent in recent years. This pervasive misuse of energy has long-term implications on the environment and society, which is why Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), in collaboration with Star Media Group Bhd (SMG), is taking proactive steps to educate the next generation to cultivate energy-efficient habits. In response, the national utility provider is reigniting the 'Powering The Future' school activation programme for its third year. It was originally launched in the Klang Valley in 2023, covering 10 schools and benefiting 890 students. The second edition saw the programme expand to the West Coast, reaching 4,545 students across 60 schools. This year, it will head to the East Coast – covering Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu – and further north to Kedah and Perlis, reaching a total of 40 schools across five states. The official launch was held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Indera Shahbandar in Pekan on May 7, with 93 Form Three students participating in the opening programme. Powering The Future 3.0 (PTF 3.0) will feature different activities tailored to primary and secondary school students. PTF 3.0 continues to promote energy efficiency through hands-on learning modules including gamification to cultivate an interactive experience for students. Primary students will take part in new activities, including a recently introduced renewable energy (RE) model kit-building exercise aimed at cultivating energy-efficient habits from a young age. They will be tasked with assembling hydro, solar, wind and hand generator model kits in groups. In secondary schools, the programme will engage students with critical thinking exercises, promoting energy-efficient practices and smart power management through real-world home scenario simulations. Students will also be introduced to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), equipping them with the knowledge and context needed to support a sustainable future. Additionally, all participating students will receive a free one-year subscription to The Star's e-Paper. This initiative aims to encourage active reading and improve English literacy while reinforcing energy conservation awareness. The other nine participating schools in Pahang are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Teruntum, SK Seri Biram, SK Langgar, SK Batu Tiga, SK Tanjung Batu, SMK Nenasi, SMK Seri Pekan, SMK Paloh Hinai and SMK Tok Sera. Nurturing sustainability warriors TNB, in partnership with SMG and M.A.D Movement, collaborated to develop engaging activities for the PTF 3.0 programme. The aim is to expose students to a deeper understanding of the energy sector, the current energy generation process and the need to transition to renewable energy through carefully curated and customised workshops. (Above and below) A total of 93 Form Three students from SMK Indera Shahbandar participated in the opening programme. This programme seeks to bridge the gap between the younger generation and the world of energy and sustainability, educating them on the importance of using energy efficiently and practising sustainability through an interactive, engaging, and youth-friendly approach. As the Malay proverb goes, 'melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya' (it is easier to shape youth while they are young), and TNB hopes the students will better understand how each of our actions – big or small – can bring about major changes to the environment. Through the PTF 3.0 programme, participants can aspire to be youth ambassadors in bringing about positive change for a more sustainable future by inspiring change among their families and local communities. Meanwhile, SMK Indera Shahbandar principal Jama Mat Yunus expressed his gratitude to TNB and SMG for forming this synergetic partnership to promote energy literacy. 'This programme is an excellent platform to educate and nurture a society that is more environmentally conscious. 'We hope it will be a catalyst for the development of our youth, not only as students but ultimately as members of a society we aim to shape for the future,' he said. 'Hopefully, the students sitting before me today will be able to bring about change in our school community and go on to become energy champions of the future who will contribute to the nation's well-being.' After Pahang, PTF 3.0 will move on to Kelantan and Terengganu in June, covering 10 schools in each state. The programme will then expand to Kedah and Perlis in July, covering 10 schools in total.

TNB ACHIEVES OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE, EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES
NATIONAL utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) delivered a stable operational performance for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (Q1 2025), reinforcing its commitment to powering Malaysia's energy future and advancing rakyat-centric development. The group's Q1 2025 performance reflected stable and sustained electricity demand, supported by ongoing domestic economic growth. Consumption from the commercial sectors grew by 5.1% largely driven by the rise of energy-intensive industries such as data centres. As Malaysia advances its ambition to become a regional digital hub, TNB continues to power critical infrastructure for the sector. As of first quarter 2025, the group had energised 21 data centres and secured 43 supply agreements, with a total committed load of around 6.4GW, reinforcing its role as a key enabler of the nation's digital and industrial transformation. Additionally, the appreciation of the Ringgit against US dollar, from RM4.73 in March 2024 to RM4.44 in March 2025 helped ease pressure on fuel and capital expenditures, with forex gains turning positive due to the stronger currency. This further supported TNB's financial resilience. 'TNB's focus remains firmly on sustaining stable performance while creating long-term value for shareholders,' said TNB president and chief executive officer, Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan. 'Through prudent cost management, reliable service delivery and a clear commitment to nation-building, we continue to provide consistent value despite ongoing global challenges.' Expanding international RE footprint Complementing its domestic efforts, TNB expanded its international renewables portfolio with the development of its first solar greenfield project in Eastfields and Bunkers Hill, United Kingdom, slated to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2025. These projects are part of TNB's long-term strategy to secure foreign-denominated returns while supporting global energy transition goals. The returns and insights from these international ventures contribute to TNB's financial strength and energy transition efforts at home. This global-local synergy ensures that TNB's international success continues to translate into national benefit. Building a resilient, inclusive energy ecosystem Building on these progress, TNB's Q1 performance reflects focused execution across its operational priorities while ensuring that growth is inclusive and aligned with national aspirations. 'Our financial strength is not an end in itself; it is the means through which we create meaningful impact for the rakyat,' said Megat Jalaluddin. 'As we modernise the grid and expand our renewable energy portfolio, we are equally focused on ensuring that no community is left behind. This is the essence of our purpose: delivering progress that uplifts all Malaysians.' Man killed after being thrown from car rammed by stage bus in Melaka
ALOR GAJAH: A 23-year-old man was killed after being thrown from his car, which was rammed by a stage bus locally known as the 'Bas Pink' (pink bus) along the Lebuh Alor Gajah - Melaka Tengah - Jasin (AMJ) highway near Taman Awan Biru here on Monday. The accident was captured in a video clip that has since gone viral on social media. Muhammad Aiman Mohd Farid, a subcontractor with Tenaga Nasional Bhd, died at the scene from severe injuries after the impact of the crash flung him out of the vehicle and into a drain. District police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said the victim's friend, Muhammad Hakimi Hafiz Baharin, 22, sustained bodily injuries in the 4.55pm crash. Ashari said preliminary investigations showed that Aiman, who was driving, and his friend were travelling from Rembia, while the bus was heading to Jalan AMJ from the Melaka Sentral bus terminal. "The victim had stopped the car by the roadside upon arriving at the location. "However, the bus veered onto the roadside and rammed into the victim's vehicle. "The impact caused the victim to be thrown from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his friend was rushed to Alor Gajah Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement. The 37-year-old bus driver was uninjured and has been arrested to assist in investigations into the accident. A urine test conducted on the driver returned negative for drugs. He also has no criminal record or outstanding traffic summonses. "The vehicle involved has been taken to Puspakom for inspection," Ashari added. He said a dashboard camera recording from the bus has been obtained and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
