July was Earth's third-warmest on record, EU scientists say

Despite a slightly lower global average temperature, the scientists said extremes, including heat and deadly floods, persisted in July.
'Two years after the hottest July on record, the recent streak of global temperature records is over for now. But this doesn't mean climate change has stopped,' said Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
'We continued to witness the effects of a warming world.'
The EU monitoring agency said new temperature records and more climate extremes are to be expected unless greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere are brought down.
On July 25, Turkey recorded its highest-ever temperature of 50.5C as it battled wildfires.

While not as hot as July 2023 or July 2024, the hottest and second-warmest on record, the Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that the planet's average surface temperature last month was still 1.25C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period, before humans began the widespread burning of oil, gas and coal.
It said the average global surface air temperature reached 16.68C in July, which is 0.45C above the 1991-2020 average for the month.
Greenhouse gases released from the burning of fossil fuels like petrol, oil and coal are the main cause of climate change.
Despite a somewhat cooler July, the 12-month period between August 2024 and July 2025 was 1.53C above pre-industrial levels, exceeding the threshold set in 2015 to limit human-caused warming to 1.5C.
Copernicus is the European Union's earth observation system based on satellite and on-the-ground data collection. Britain rejoined the climate agency in 2023.
Julien Nicolas, a senior Copernicus scientist, said it was important to view last month's decrease in the context of two anomalous years in terms of warming.
'We are really coming out from a streak of global temperature records that lasted almost two years,' Mr Nicolas said. 'It was a very exceptional streak.'
He added that as long as the long-term warming trend persists, extreme weather events will continue to happen.

Choking smoke spewed by wildfires is far more dangerous than previously thought, a new study has found, with death tolls from short-term exposure to fine particulates underestimated by 93%. Researchers found that 535 people in Europe died on average each year between 2004 and 2022 as a result of breathing in the tiny toxic particles known as PM2.5 that are released when wildfires rage. Under standard methods, which assume PM2.5 from wildfires is as deadly as from other sources, such as traffic, they would have expected just 38 deaths a year. The study comes as wildfires ravage southern Europe, and new data from EU fire monitors shows that 895,000 hectares (2.2m acres) have burned so far in 2025, breaking records for this time of year. They have pumped out more than twice the amount of PM2.5 that wildfires have generated on average by this point in the year over the last two decades. 'Previously, people assumed the same toxicity for wildfire particles and all particles,' said Prof Cathryn Tonne, an environmental epidemiologist at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and co-author of the study. 'Our paper shows evidence that – although it happens less often – the health impact for the same amount of particles is stronger for wildfire particles,' she added. Dirty air is one of the biggest threats to human health, and research suggests wildfires are a significant contributor to the vast death toll. In December, a study attributed 1.53 million deaths around the world each year to short-term and long-term exposure to air pollution from wildfires. The ISGlobal researchers, who looked only at the smoke's short-term effects, for which the evidence base is stronger, combined daily mortality records from 32 European countries with estimates of PM2.5 pollution from 2004 to 2022. Using models that account for an expected lag in deaths, they found exposure to wildfire smoke increased the risk of death in the following week. For every extra microgram of PM2.5 fouling 1 cubic metre of air, they found that all-cause mortality rose by 0.7%, respiratory mortality went up by 1% and cardiovascular mortality rose by 0.9%. 'The results are concerning, considering that wildfires and other extreme events are increasing exponentially with climate change,' said Prof Antonio Gasparrini, an environmental epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who was not involved in the study. Devastating blazes compounded by relentless heat have killed several people across southern Europe and the Balkans in recent weeks. But deaths from the toxic fumes released by the fires are likely to go unnoticed. 'Smoke can affect populations far away from the fires,' said Tonne. 'So many more people will be exposed to smoke than the immediate physical threat of the flames.' The researchers said the study was limited by the lack of variability in the data on exposure to fire-related particulate matter, which made it harder to estimate how people's health responded based on age and sex. They were also unable to 'completely disentangle' the health burden of fire-related PM2.5 from ozone, another pollutant released by wildfires, though they said estimates were largely consistent when they adjusted the main model for ozone from all sources. Toxic pollution from wildfires creeps into the homes of more than 1 billion people a year, a study found in May. It concluded that air purifiers were an effective but expensive solution to indoor air pollution, which can be nearly three times higher on wildfire days than normal days, even when all windows and doors are closed. The risk of fire weather has risen as greenhouse gas emissions have heated the planet and dried out vegetation in some regions. The Iberian peninsula has been hit particularly hard this year, with Spain and Portugal accounting for the bulk of Europe's burned area. Associate professor Victor Resco de Dios, a forestry engineer at the University of Lleida, said the fire belt would move north in the coming years and decades. 'What we are witnessing now will sooner or later occur also in central and northern Europe, where we have also seen an aggravation of the fire problem,' he said. 'This is not a Mediterranean problem, but a European one.'

UK recovers position in EU's Horizon Europe science research programme

The UK is quickly recovering a prime position in the EU's £80bn science research programme 18 months after becoming a participating member following the resolution of Brexit problems, data shows. The country was frozen out of Horizon Europe for three years in a tit-for-tat row with the then prime minister, Boris Johnson, over the Northern Ireland trading arrangements. While the UK has to play catch-up, entering three years into the seven-year 2020-27 funding programme, data shows British scientists are punching above their weight with €735m (£635m) in grants in 2024. That ranks the UK as the fifth most successful country in the programme, which is open to 43 nations: the 27 EU member states and 16 non-EU associate members also including New Zealand, Canada and Norway. Germany, the top participant in Horizon in 2024, won €1.4bn (£1.21bn) in grants and Spain, which came third, got €900m (£777m). Scientists have said previously they were 'over the moon' to be back working with EU colleagues. They said they knew it would take time to return to the top three because of the time it took to build multinational consortiums to apply for funds. But in terms of grants for proposals by individual scientists, which are easier to assemble, the UK now ranks as the second-most successful participating country after Germany, with €242m (£209m) in funds. The UK is the single most successful applicant country when it comes to Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, one of the most prestigious grant programmes for doctoral and post-doctoral research in the world. UK scientists have said repeatedly the Brexit lockout damaged Britain's reputation on the world stage and made it difficult for universities to recruit researchers from the EU. In terms of recipients, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge are neck and neck, with awards of over €65m each, followed by University College London and Imperial College. With projects ranging from the research to develop brain catheters inspired by wasps to efforts to create aviation fuel from yeast and greenhouse gases, the UK has been catapulted to the top of the league of non-EU beneficiaries by number of grants. The UK was one of the leading beneficiaries of Horizon, earning more in grants than it contributed in funds before Brexit.
