Review: SwitchBot Adjustable Roller Shade is great (once you get it up)
While the shade is marketed as DIY-friendly, I found the installation process... challenging to say the least
SwitchBot Adjustable Roller Shade
Switchbot is a company that promises to bring home automation to the masses, and its latest effort is an ambitious, self-installed smart window blind - the type you see in the homes of tech bros - at a fraction of the price.
The SwitchBot Adjustable Roller Shade will cost you under £200 and, if you're brave enough or a competent DIY-er, offers a cost-effective alternative to professionally installed motorized blinds.
While the shade is marketed as DIY-friendly, I found the installation process... challenging to say the least. To be honest, I lucked out. I picked the width of the shade that didn't need an alteration from my end, otherwise I'd have been in the world of hurt, having to cut the fabric myself. Even though all the tools needed are supplied, that would not have ended well.
Not that I could have altered the width anyway as the first screw I came across that I was instructed to unscrew immediately threaded. So if I hadn't picked the right size, it would still be in the box. Also, for extra fun, the instructions don't always align with the (tiny) video tutorials.
I also fell foul of mistaking a thin length of plastic as part of the packaging. I threw it away before right at the end of the set-up I found out it was part of the blind! That was my bad, and I was able to engineer a replacement made of cardboard.
Reading this you might think it's best to steer clear. Well, here's the thing, if you manage to navigate getting the thing up, it works brilliantly and you'll be extremely happy with it.
Once installed, the SwitchBot Roller Shade - coming in either white or grey - boasts a sleek and modern design, operates quietly, with noise levels as low as 30dB in silent mode, making it suitable for bedrooms and other quiet spaces. The shade can be controlled via a mobile app, voice commands (with the SwitchBot Hub 2), or a wired controller, offering flexibility in operation.
You'll need help to install the SwitchBot Adjustable Roller Shade
The shade is powered by a rechargeable battery that can last up to eight months on a single charge. An optional solar panel is available to keep the battery charged, though some users find the panel's appearance not so great. I didn't have that to test so couldn't offer an opinion. Integration with smart home platforms like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts is possible through the SwitchBot Hub 2, enabling features like scheduling and percentage-based adjustments. To be honest, I mostly used the app (once I'd got over playing 'blind goes up, blind goes down'), which I found to be pretty straightforward and surprisingly powerful.
So here's the thing. Now they're up, I love them. Would I want to go through the installation again? Maybe not. Do you need to be scared, yourself? I'm at the extreme low-end of the DIY scale so if you have any skills or experience, you might find it easy. But I'd definitely pick the right shade immediately, and not throw away the 'packaging' before you set it up!
The Switchbot Roller Shade is available from £169.99 from the Switchbot website
Other reviews
Smart Home Scene: "If the SwitchBot Roller Shades fit your use case and budget, I can recommend them without reservations. If you find the DIY element of these shades challenging, consider the ready-made SmartWings Blinds as a good alternative."
Reidential Tech Today: "While the overall installation process is reasonably easy, a homeowner will want to very carefully perform the process of cutting the fabric role as a mistake could be costly. Finally, Smart home integrators might even consider offering the SwitchBot Roller Shade as an inexpensive option compared to the fully custom smart shades they typically offer."

Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones with 'amazing sound' now £100 off in rare deal

Amazon has slashed the price of the best-selling Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphones Bose headphones are some of the most expensive on the market, with over-the-head devices usually costing around £300 or more. And with good reason, they are well regarded for their good sound quality and durability. However, Amazon currently has a deal on a pair of Bose QuietComfort SC Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones, with £100 off. The headphones are known for their noise-cancelling capabilities, have a 24-hour battery life, two listening modes and control audio options which let the user control the base. Originally priced at £289.95, these headphones are now available for £189. This huge price drop is only available for a limited time. Shoppers ditch shower gel for Scottish brand that smells 'like expensive spa' Hot sleepers recommend all-season goose feather duvet that is 'light and cosy' The device has more than 2,100 reviews, and a stellar 4.6 out of 5 rating, The Mirror reports."I've never spent this amount of money on headphones before, but they are fab and well worth the money", said one shopper. They continued by highlighting some of the other features and said: "The sound is amazing, and you can set it to your liking using the phone app. Very comfortable to use over-ear whilst also wearing my glasses. "Folds up nicely into its own bag. The battery lasts a long time, and the headphones charge quickly." Another customer commented: "Best value for money earphones, and I chose these because of the quality and the price. They were on offer, they are comfortable to wear, and the noise-cancelling is amazing. "It blocks out background noise, and the battery life is long too. I haven't had to charge them since I've had them, although I haven't had a chance to wear them as often as I like." Alternative choices, including the Sony ULT WEAR noise-cancelling headphones, can provide longer battery performance at a reduced cost. The model includes Alexa and Google Assistant functionality. Boasting 30 hours of battery duration, they're currently reduced to £119, from £179. For budget options, Argos has many headphones priced at £100 or less. For instance, these Sennheiser HD 400S are on sale for £49.99, down from £59.99. They are corded and come with a charger. Returning to Bose's headphones, one customer noted drawbacks, writing: "You cannot turn off the sound processing on these headphones. You can have ANC (which aims to cancel out sound around you) or Ambient Mode (which passes through external sound to you). You can adjust the mix of ambient and ANC, but you cannot turn off the sound processing. "I highlight this because I didn't realise before I bought them, there are many times I'd prefer to have the ANC off to save battery in quiet environments. Returned and bought Sony instead. On the plus side, sound is excellent as you'd expect." Another Amazon user concludes: "Wow, Amazing sound quality. Comfort is as good as it gets. Just what I expected from Bose. Pure perfection, 10/10."

SwitchBot Circulator Fan review: smart air circulator with app control and quiet performance

SwitchBot's air circulator is a pricey portable device, but it's incredibly effective and extremely smart | SwitchBot This article contains affiliate links. If you're not a fan (see what I did there?) of being blown around by noisy blades, then an air circulator is for you. There are quite a few on the market now, and they bring various benefits over conventional fans because of some clever physics that goes on, thanks to how they're designed. While a regular fan pushes air in one direction, giving you a direct breeze, an air circulator can move air around the whole room. This means it doesn't just blow at you — it creates a continuous airflow loop that mixes warm and cool air together, evening out the temperature and helping your space feel more comfortable overall. Air circulators work very differently to conventional fans | SwitchBot Air circulators can also help in warm weather, boosting the efficiency of a heating source by helping it to fill the room more effectively. One of the latest companies to dip their toes into the air circulator space is SwitchBot, a tech firm that has become known for taking existing technology and making it smarter. But, on the face of it at least, its latest Circulator Fan doesn't look all that smart. It's a nice design with a minimalist feel about the horseshoe-shaped base stand, but it still has the trademark bulbous fan surround, and a compact digital display with an array of touch-sensitive buttons, and a basic remote control is included. You can choose a cordless battery-powered version or an ever-so-slightly cheaper mains powered version - but the cordless one is obviously more versatile. Because it's powered by a rechargeable battery, it's ideal for outdoor use | SwitchBot The smart features are there, though, and they're largely hidden away in the SwitchBot app. It gives you access to the full suite of controls, and lets you alter the angle of horizontal and vertical oscillation remotely, and lets you set up timers. The truly smart features happen when you link it to a SwitchBot hub, though, because this uses the Matter network to integrate it with other smart devices in your house, and it unlocks access to smart speakers, or smart thermometers. Bellowing an order at Alexa might not seem all that futuristic nowadays, but having your fan turn on when a smart thermometer notices the temperature has just reached an uncomfortable level is very handy indeed. It goes some way to justifying the fan's entry price. The cordless version is around £129.99 - deals come and go, but that's about the ballpark. It's actually pretty pricey as air circulators go, but there really aren't any out there that are much cleverer than this one. It's super quiet on its lowest setting, and there's a trick sleep mode, too | SwitchBot A big benefit of air circulators is you don't need to run them at high speeds, even on very hot days. This brings two bonuses - firstly, it can be really quiet. Even on its top speed setting, SwitchBot's air circulator is very unobtrusive. At its lowest speed setting, it's practically inaudible. The other bonus is a lengthy battery life. SwitchBot claims it will run for up to 12 hours in its low setting, and that's about right. It's much shorter with the fan speed turned up a few notches, but still more than enough to polish off a picnic or watch an outdoor movie. There are other clever touches, too. It's the first fan, let alone air circulator, I've tested that has a smart sleep mode. This starts the fan off on a high setting to cool you down, then gradually weakens the speed as you nod off. There's also a night-light, which can be set up and controlled remotely. Meaco's new portable Sefte is is an obvious rival - but while it's cheaper, it's nowhere near as smart | Meaco It could be argued that, without linking the air circulator up to some sort of smart eco-system, it's just a posh fan with a fairly high price tag. And it's important to add that there are other decent battery air circulators out there, like Meaco's excellent Sefte, which is far cheaper at £79.99. But this is for people who like their smart features. It's incredibly effective at cooling you down, but when you consider all the automations you can unlock by linking it up to other smart devices, it comes into its own.

'Worth the money' Bose headphones get £100 price cut

The premium headphones have noise-cancelling, are comfortable to wear and have a long-lasting battery Bosch has long been known for its array of ever-evolving audio equipment and technology, whether it's headphones, speakers, sound systems or more. One of the latter's premium options has just seen a major £100 cut to its price on Amazon in a 35% price slash. Bose's QuietComfort SC Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones offer a cushioned, noise-cancelling listening experience to your favourite tunes or games. Providing the perfect escape from a world of distractions, these headphones have been reduced from £289.95 to £189.00. This major saving has been hailed as being 'well worth the money' by satisfied customers, with more than 2,100 reviews earning the product a 4.6 out of 5 rating. "I've never spent this amount of money on headphones before, they are fab and well worth the money" said one shopper. 'I tried Dr Hilary Jones-backed way of treating allergies and it worked' Hand in an old Fire Tablet and Amazon will cut 20% off model for the school holidays They continued their review by saying they 'wish they'd bought them sooner', going on to highlight the quality: "The sound is amazing, and you can set it to your liking using the phone app. "Very comfortable to use over-ear whilst also wearing my glasses. Folds up nicely into its own bag. The battery lasts a long time, and the headphones charge quickly." The QuietComfort SC provide up to 24 hours of battery life, ideal for long journeys or audiobook sessions. Another user said: "Best value for money earphones, and I chose these because of the quality and the price." She added to her five-star review: "They were on offer, they are comfortable to wear, and the noise cancelling is amazing. It blocks out background noise, and the battery life is long too. I haven't had to charge them since I've had them, although I haven't had a chance to wear them as often as I like." Other options, such as the Sony ULT WEAR over-ear wireless noise-cancelling headphones, can offer an extended battery life at a lesser price. The pair feature Alexa & Google Assistant. With a 30 hours of battery life they are now on sale for £99, so £90 less than the Bose QuietComfort pair. Bose's device boasts 2,118 reviews in total, including a three-star-rated analysis which praised the sound quality. However, some users noted issues over time with the frame. As one person said: "I bought these as a Xmas present for someone. He was very happy with the sound quality and especially the noise-cancelling. "However, three-and-a-half months later, the covering on the right earpad has come apart at the seams. The material is not leather. While this is comfortable and these headphones can be worn for a long time, there is a slight 'ear sweating' issue. "Also, the material is made out of two parts, and not stitched together, but either glued or heat-sealed. Plastic doesn't 'breathe' like leather, so there are holes cut into the back of the pads. These holes are again an obvious point of weakness in the design."
