From shadow shooting to Junior World Cup silver: Adriyan's journey
CHENNAI: The day when Adriyan Karmakar shot silver in prone on his debut at the junior World Cup at Suhl (Germany), thousands of miles away one person was silently admiring his son's effort. It is not easy to be born into a shooting family where a father has left an illustrious trail of records and medals. It's never easy to emulate such a star. 'I am emotional because in 2010 I had won a silver at the same event (but senior) in Sydney,' Joydeep told this daily. Adriyan lost the gold to Sweden's Jesper Johansson by just 0.3 points. Griffin Lake (USA) won bronze with 624.6 points.
For Adriyan, who started shooting at seven and competed at the senior nationals three years later (it was allowed by the National Rifle Association of India back then), however, the path he chose was not easy. Father Joydeep was not just an incredible shooter, he finished fourth at the London Olympcis, but is an able master (coach) with a keen eye for talent. Sitting in Bhopal, he was recollecting the day when he had a serious discussion with his son about pursuing the sport.
'It must be when he was around 16 or 17 and it was not a discussion,' he corrected the word and said it was a spat. 'I thought he was not being too serious about the sport and I asked him to quit. I told him shooting is not what you should do. There was a lot of tension and he said that his place was in the shooting range and he shall shoot. I told him if he wants to shoot he has to be serious and I will support him financially, morally and mentally.'
Joydeep realised that brought in a kind of transformation in his son. Months later he went on to win at Khelo India Games and worked very hard to improve his game. 'He was mentally in the sport,' he said.
Still, Joydeep was not expecting this kind of results from 20-year-old Adriyan. 'I was hoping for a score around 620-624 but a 626.7 off 60 shots should be considered great,' said the father. In fact, Adriyan started shadow shooting in Kolkata and continued with it for quite some time. 'He won a medal without shooting in a range because we did not have one in Kolkata,' he said.

Archery World Cup Stage 3: Madhura fourth as Indian women's compound team earns quarterfinal berth
Madhura Dhamangaonkar continued her impressive run, finishing fourth in the compound women's qualification round, helping India secure the third seeding and a direct entry into the quarterfinals at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya on Wednesday. Madhura, who made a remarkable comeback to the international circuit last month after three years, had bagged three medals -- an individual gold, a silver in the women's team event, and a mixed team bronze with Abhishek Verma at the Shanghai Stage 2. In Antalya, she finished just three points behind South Korea's Han Seungyeon (603). With her top-four finish, Madhura has also earned a bye in the second round of the individual compound event. Among other Indian women in the fray, Chikitha Taniparthi was the next best at 11th, while multiple World Cup gold medallist Jyothi Surekha Vennam had a modest outing, ending 19th in the rankings. In the men's compound category, India secured fifth place in the team event. Rishabh Yadav was the best among the Indian trio in individual qualification, finishing 13th, while veteran Abhishek and reigning world champion Ojas Deotale were placed 29th and 34th respectively. The recurve events saw a mixed day for India. In the men's qualification round, Dhiraj Bommadevara was placed 13th, Atanu Das was 15th, and Parth Salunkhe, who won a bronze at the previous World Cup stage, ended 26th as the team ended with a fifth ranking. The Indian women's recurve archers, however, struggled. Former world No. 1 Deepika Kumari finished 35th, while Ankita Bhakat (33rd) was the best-placed Indian. Simranjeet Kaur ended 54th, as the women's team ended at 12th.

"What Happened Is Beyond Tragic": Sachin Tendulkar Reacts As 11 Die At RCB's IPL Celebration Due To Stampede
What started as a celebration, turned fatal on Wednesday as 11 people died in Bengaluru due to stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory celebration. Much like Tuesday night when the team's win in Ahmedabad triggered a street party in the Garden City, Wednesday too had thousands, which eventually became lakhs, converging at the Chinnaswamy stadium, leaving the police outnumbered and struggling to take control of the situation. The men in uniform tried to use mild force to disperse the crowd or to at least bring some order but that did little to discourage people, many of whom could be seen pressed against the stadium's entrance gate, desperate to get in. The scenes leading up to the tragedy reminded one of the historic welcome given to the T20 World Cup-winning Indian squad by Mumbai in July last year. However, while the sea of humanity had a gala time in Mumbai, things went haywire in the Garden City. Sachin Tendulkar has reacted on the incident. "What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all," Sachin posted on X. What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all. 🙏 — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 4, 2025 Here's what Royal Challengers Bengaluru had to say in its official statement regarding the incident. "We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us," the statement read. "RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. "Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe." The BCCI said the turn of events was shocking and the organisers should have been better-prepared. "It's most unfortunate, organisers should have planned RCB's IPL-winning celebrations better," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI. "When one organises a victory celebration of this magnitude, proper precautions and security measures need to be taken," he added.

In a heartwarming moment off the cricket field, Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav got engaged to his childhood friend Vanshika in an intimate ceremony held in Lucknow on June 4, 2025. The event, attended by close family and friends, including cricketers like Rinku Singh, was a celebration of love and companionship, adding a personal milestone to what has already been an eventful year for the ace spinner. Who is Vanshika? Vanshika, who hails from Shyam Nagar, is an LIC employee and has known Kuldeep since their younger days. Their quiet bond away from the public eye blossomed over the years, culminating in this joyous engagement. Photos of the ceremony quickly went viral, with fans pouring in congratulatory messages on social media. IPL 2025: A Steady Campaign for Delhi Capitals Kuldeep Yadav carried his momentum into the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League, where he played a key role for the Delhi Capitals. In 14 matches, the chinaman bowler took 15 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.07, underlining his ability to control the middle overs and pick up timely breakthroughs. Despite Delhi Capitals falling short in their playoff push, Kuldeep's consistent performance stood out, especially on spin-friendly tracks like Delhi and Chennai. His ability to deceive top-order batters with his variations has kept him in the frame as India's leading spin option in white-ball cricket. Upcoming Challenge: India Tour of England 2025 Kuldeep's engagement comes at a pivotal juncture in his career. With Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from international cricket, Kuldeep is now India's only specialist spinner named in the 18-member Test squad for the challenging five-match Test series in England, set to begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The tour will test India's bench strength and tactical flexibility in swinging English conditions. Kuldeep, known for his ability to turn the ball even on flat surfaces, will be vital to India's attack, especially during the latter half of the matches when the pitch begins to wear. Having already played key roles in India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy victory, Kuldeep enters this series with high expectations and a leadership role within the bowling unit. A Perfect Balance: Love, Cricket, and Legacy For Kuldeep Yadav, 2025 is shaping up to be a year to remember. With a solid IPL behind him, personal happiness blooming, and a challenging tour on the horizon, the 30-year-old spinner is ready to add more milestones both personal and professional to his already impressive journey.
