Funeral details for Cornal Hendricks confirmed
Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks will be laid to rest on Sunday, 25 May in Wellington in the Boland, following his sudden passing last Wednesday.
He was 37.
The former star suffered a fatal heart attack having battled a heart condition since 2015.
Hendricks made his Test debut in 2014, earning 12 caps for South Africa and scoring five tries during his international career.
Meanwhile, his memorial service will be held on Thursday, 22 May at the Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington.
Another memorial service will be held in Paarl on Friday, 23 May.
Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, paid tribute to the former dual-international who wore the green and gold with distinction.
Apart from playing in 12 Tests for the Springboks in 2014 and 2015, he also represented the Blitzboks between 2011 and 2014, with whom he won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow in 2014.
He was also a member of the Rugby World Cup Sevens squad in Moscow in 2013.
Cornal Hendricks, who was named Springbok Sevens Player of the Year for 2013, made his senior debut in the colours of the Boland Kavaliers, which is also where his career concluded after his last game for Boland in the SA Cup earlier this year.
He also represented the Cheetahs and Bulls with distinction in Super Rugby and the United Rugby Championship (URC), as well as in the light blue jersey in the Currie Cup finals of 2020 and 2021, both won by the men from Pretoria.
Apart from his 12 Tests, in which he scored five tries, Hendricks played one non-Test match for Boks and also ran out in the colours of the SA 'A' team.
In total, Cornal Hendricks played 233 first-class matches in a career spanning 17 years.
'We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Cornal Hendricks, a remarkable athlete who represented his country in sevens and XV-man rugby with distinction,' said Alexander.
'Cornal was one of those players who loved the game and he worked extremely hard, but he always did so with a smile on his face, treating all people with respect. His energy and love of life, on and off the field, lifted his team-mates and those around him.
'His contributions to the sport and his unwavering dedication will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Stephaney and their children, his family, friends, and team-mates during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to inspire future generations.' That try would've gotten the visitors off to the perfect start. Instead, the try was cancelled after the Sharks were adjudicated to be offside and not retreating as their scrum moved backwards. Harold Vorster, Cameron Hanekom and Marcell Coetzee found themselves in the naughty chair at a time when the side could not afford it. They were dominating but gave the Sharks a sniff playing with 13 and 14 players shortly before and right after halftime. How the visitors did not capitalise on the yellow cards is still a mystery and they should have done more to put the Bulls under pressure. A top defensive effort While it was not ideal to receive those yellow cards shortly after each other, the way the defence dug in and galvanised right before halftime underscored the Bulls' defensive prowess and their championship credentials. Kolisi commends Bulls on URC win, wishes them the best for final
Siya Kolisi said the Sharks "fell over our feet" in the semi-final but praised the Bulls for their excellent performance. Sharks stand-in captain Siya Kolisi was humble in defeat as his side crashed out of the United Rugby Championship in the semi-finals against the Bulls. He and coach John Plumtree even wished the Pretoria side the best for their final against Leinster in Dublin next weekend, with Plumtree saying he would proudly wear a Bulls shirt on the day. The Bulls proved the more mature of the two South African sides in their semi-final, starting well and then holding onto their lead throughout the game despite a Sharks resurgence and a period when the Bulls were down to 12 men. They won the day three tries to two (score 25–13) thanks to their excellent defence, which the Sharks could not penetrate even when they had extra men. Though they did score once when they had superior numbers, they were twice on the Bulls try line during this period and failed to finish. They also only slotted one out of five kicks at goal. 'We fell over our feet' 'We didn't start well but the Bulls were really good today. They took their opportunity. We made a lot of mistakes as well but well done to them and all the best for them for the final,' Kolisi said afterwards. The eighthman was standing in for Sharks club captain Eben Etzebeth, who picked up an injury in the week leading up to the game. Kolisi said they knew the local derby would be hard and had prepared for it. However, they failed to execute their game plan. 'We created a lot of opportunities, got to the try line a couple of times. But we fell over our feet. And their set-piece dominated us a little bit. Well done to them.' Sharks didn't have the best season, but Kolisi is proud The Springbok captain added the Sharks had not clicked this season though they were still able to win close games (half their regular season wins came by seven points or less). Yet they showed grit, especially in their quarter-final win against Munster, decided by a penalty shootout. 'But we are going to build from here. We should have had a better season as a team but we were happy we were able to get to the semi-final. 'Today we were beaten by a much better team who took their opportunities and we didn't do that. We wish them the best, hopefully they can go and win it.' For his part, Bulls captain Ruan Nortjé thanked the Sharks for the 'awesome game'. 'It was a bouncy ball, it could have gone any way. We are just really lucky to be on the winning side tonight,' Nortjé said. 'With all the yellow cards we got they put us under a lot of pressure. The lineouts as well, so credit to them. But I am just really proud of the boys.'

Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images The Springboks and Bulls suffered a huge Cameron Hanekom blow when he limped off with a serious looking injury during his side's 25-13 United Rugby Championship (URC) semifinal win over the Sharks at Loftus on Saturday night. Hanekom, who has enjoyed another fantastic season, and was recently named the URC's Next-Gen Player of the Season in recognition of his scintillating form, will now miss the URC final and likely a chunk of the coming international season, where he was expected to feature for the Boks. He picked up a hamstring injury in the second half of the match, after a clean out at the ruck, and after being carted off on the medic golf cart, he returned to the side of the field near the end of the game on crutches. 'He's just having a sonar (scan) now. Obviously he's very upset, that's natural. But I said to his parents now that we forget he's just 21,' said Bulls Director of Rugby Jake White during the post match press conference. 'When I started coaching, 21 year old forwards weren't invited to Northern Transvaal training. And if they were it was really to be cannon fodder for the old men to bash them on a Monday night (in training). 'So he's obviously jumped the queue because he's so talented, and he feels a bit down now. But we mustn't forget he's just 21 years old, and there's still a lot of rugby that he's going to be involved in over the next few years.' Extent unknown Although it is too early to know the extent of the injury, White said that he will definitely be out of the URC final against Leinster in Dublin this coming weekend, but admitted to being hopeful that the injury would not be as serious as it looked when he was taken off the field in obvious discomfort. 'When it is swollen and there's blood (in the injury), you can't really see (how bad it is). They had a look and he won't play next week, that I can tell you. 'He thinks he can. He said he might go to the same doctor (Johan) Goosen went to (after a recent knee injury that also looked very serious),' joked White. 'But I can't see it. He can't travel with that injury. I'm hoping for his sake it's like Goosen, a short-term rather than a long-term injury.' With the Springbok season kicking off at the end of this month with a match against the Barbarians in Cape Town, followed by the Incoming Series against Italy and Georgia in July, unless he is very lucky, Hanekom will probably be ruled out of those four games. We will now have to wait and see whether he will recover in time for the Rugby Championship, kicking off in August, or if he will be ruled out for a number of months, which we will learn once he is properly assessed.
