📈 MLS Power Rankings: Miami back on top as east dominates top-five

Yahoo22-04-2025

We've had another major shakeup in the top-10 of the MLS power rankings. While the Eastern Conference teams continue to dominate the upper-echelon of the standings, the west has perhaps provided us with the most volatile movement.
Let's dig into this week's top-10.

Phil Neville's side are now unbeaten in six consecutive MLS matches, and after a frankly chaotic 3-3 draw with LAFC over the weekend, they proved that they can absolutely hang with the big-boys under the light.
There may some rumblings of disappointment in the Rose City after the Timbers gave up the lead on two separate occasions Saturday evening, both goals coming in stoppage-time of the respective halves.

After a short spell out of the top-10, Austin have jumped back into 9th thanks to a narrow win over the LA Galaxy, albeit a woeful LA Galaxy.
Despite spending mega-bucks on their attacking ranks during the last-two offseasons, they have struggled mightily to get them going. However, for the first time this season Austin perhaps have scored a bundle of goals on their way to victory — they will settle for the three points though.

LAFC feel as if they could be on the verge of breaking out one week, and the next they require a magical free-kick and stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point. But one thing is for sure, Steve Cherundolo's side remain as talented as any of the top teams in MLS and can put together a run at the drop of a hat.

It may be harsh on Minnesota to fall a few places after a goalless draw with FC Dallas, but they are simply a victim of the teams around them making big strides in the last seven days.
Eric Ramsay's team is as well-drilled as they come in MLS, but a little bit of star-dust can sometimes be lacking when they need it most.

After a slump in MLS in the midst of their Concacaf Champions Cup run, Cincinnati have a bounced back quite well, winning four in a row to remind the league why they remain one of the true MLS Cup contenders.
Just give Cincinnati a few more weeks and they will keep on creeping up towards the top of the standings.

The Union responded well to a min-slump with a superb 3-0 victory over Atlanta United, and thanks to their red-hot start to the season are still just three points out of top-spot in the Eastern Conference. And when you have the MLS golden boot leader up front, you'll always be in with a shout.

The Crew drop in our rankings for the first time in a long time after a 'home' loss to Inter Miami. Columbus' lack of a ruthless number-nine was on full display in a game they dominated, but somehow found a way to draw a blank.

Dean Smith's side continue to roll and they impressed wholeheartedly in a thumping victory over San Diego on Saturday.
That is now eight straight games at home without tasting defeat for Charlotte, and a pearly seat at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Vancouver may have only sat atop our rankings for one week but you can hang your hat on them making a return at some point this season.
The high-flying 'Caps touched earth for 90 minutes in a hard-fought goalless draw with St. Louis City this past weekend, but you can't help but wonder if they have their sights set on a Concacaf Champions Cup showdown with Inter Miami later this week.

Speak of the devil, Inter Miami are back on top. They rode their luck in Cleveland on Saturday, but Javier Mascherano's side seemingly always find a way to win when the chips are down.

Resilient Mathurin stars in Pacers win

Bennedict Mathurin of the Indiana Pacers shoots the ball over Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in game three of the NBA Finals (POOL) Bennedict Mathurin's game-changing performance in game three of the NBA Finals felt like a long time coming, but the 22-year-old Canadian made sure he was ready when the opportunity arrived. Mathurin came off the bench to score 27 points in Indiana's 116-107 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, which gave the Pacers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series. Advertisement In 22:24 minutes on court through the second and fourth quarters, Mathurin was a brutally efficient nine-of 12 from the field, making two of his three three-point attempts and seven of eight free-throws, adding in four rebounds an assist and a blocked shot for good measure. "Just staying ready," Mathurin said. "Whenever my number is called, go into the game and do the right things and try to help my team win -- that's the whole mindset." Mathurin is playing in the playoffs for the first time, after watching the Pacers' run to the Eastern Conference finals from the bench in the wake of season-ending surgery in March of 2024. Even then, the Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said, the 22-year-old Canadian was looking ahead. Advertisement "He was with the team. He just wasn't playing," Carlisle recalled. "He took a lot of notes, a lot of mental notes, and he may have written some things down. "I do know that after he sustained the injury, it was either in February or early March, you can order these calendars that start on a specific day and then they count days. "So there was a calendar sitting in our training room and every day he would come in and take one off, take one off. He was counting the days down to being cleared sometime in August and then be able to begin training camp, begin five-on-five with our guys in September and then be in training camp, really, with his eyes firmly set on an opportunity in the playoffs. "So he's putting a lot of work to be ready for these moments, and tonight he was an absolute major factor." Advertisement Mathurin said he was "fortunate to learn a lot" in what was an unfortunate situation last year but he admitted that it wasn't easy. Playing in the Finals, in front of the intense fans in Indianapolis, "is a dream" but one he doesn't want to get caught up in. "I'm not trying to live in my dream," he said. "I'm trying to live in the present and make sure the dream ends well, which means winning next game and winning a championship." bb/rcw

Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau

Charles Barkley Takes Shot At Knicks After Firing Tom Thibodeau originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After defeating the defending champion Boston Celtics in six games, Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks saw their season come to an end in the Eastern Conference finals, falling to the Indiana Pacers. Advertisement Thibodeau joined the Knicks in 2020 and has made it to the NBA playoffs in four of his five seasons there. However, despite the recent success, New York elected to part ways with Thibodeau following its elimination. The Knicks have looked into interviewing four current NBA head coaches, including the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Chris Finch, the Houston Rockets' Ime Udoka and the Atlanta Hawks' Quin Snyder. However, according to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Hawks became the fourth team to deny the Knicks an interview, leaving New York empty-handed to begin its coaching search. Outside of these four potential candidates, New York hasn't revealed much of a plan going forward without Thibodeau. And NBA legend Charles Barkley does not approve. NBA analyst Charles Barkley criticized the New York Jairaj-Imagn Images On Wednesday, Barkley joined ESPN for its pregame coverage of Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The former Phoenix Suns forward was not pleased with New York's coaching decision, calling them out live on air. Advertisement "The Knicks gotta be the stupidest damn people in the world," Barkley said. "Like, you don't fire a good coach like that and don't have a plan. I mean, Thibs did a hell of a job. Obviously, something's going on there, but you don't have a plan, and now, the three coaches turn you down. You gotta have a plan, man. And they don't have a plan. Now... I mean, I don't know what the hell they are going to do." Although Thibodeau hasn't won an NBA championship as a head coach, he has still put together an impressive coaching resume. He won two NBA Coach of the Year awards and even led the Knicks to their first conference finals in 25 years. Chelsea announce players for Club World Cup; these stars couldn't make it to the list

Chelsea have announced the list of players who are left out of Chelsea's squad for the upcoming Club World Cup 2025. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on June 12, 2025, 08:30 IST Chelsea have announced the list of players who are left out of Chelsea's squad for the upcoming Club World Cup 2025. The new competition brings a lot of energy to the teams and Chelsea after winning Europa Conference League is also been named in one of the groups. Chelsea's 28-man squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the USA was officially revealed on June 11, 2025. Following their UEFA Conference League triumph, the Blues are set to compete in Group D—alongside LA FC (Mexico), Flamengo (Brazil), and ES Tunis (Tunisia). However, the announcement was met with controversy as eight notable players were left out: João Félix Djordje Petrovic Axel Disasi Raheem Sterling Ben Chilwell Kendry Paez Renato Veiga Wesley Fofana (excluded due to hamstring injury) For many of those left out, especially Félix, Sterling, Petrovic, Disasi, and Chilwell, this exclusion appears to be more than a tournament decision; it's a clear signal of summer exits being planned. Moreso, Chelsea's focus is shifting toward youth, rejuvenation, and financial pragmatism as they look to reshape the squad after a mixed season.
