Umrao Jaan returns to big screen, Rekha's classic to compete with Kajol's Maa in box office face-off
Theatres will see a rare box office face-off between two women-led films on June 27 as Rekha's Umrao Jaan returns in a 4K restored version, clashing with Kajol's upcoming horror drama Maa. While one is a celebrated classic, the other is a new entry in the expanding Shaitaan universe. Both aim to attract very different cinema audiences. Classic restored Umrao Jaan, originally released in 1981 and directed by Muzaffar Ali, has been digitally restored in 4K. The restoration was led by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). PVR Inox will re-release the film under its Timeless Classics banner. Limited vs wide release While Umrao Jaan will return to theatres with limited shows, Kajol's Maa is expected to get a wider release across more screens. Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat Pathak, is marketed as part of the Shaitaan universe, giving it a potential advantage at the box office. Two films, one day Despite the contrast in genre—period drama versus mythological horror—both films highlight strong women-led narratives. Umrao Jaan explores the life of a courtesan-poetess in 19th-century Lucknow, while Maa offers a horror-driven storyline rooted in mythology. Cultural legacy Rekha's performance in Umrao Jaan earned her a National Award for Best Actress. The film also features Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, and others. Known for its iconic soundtrack by Khayyam, the film's songs like Dil Cheez Kya Hai and In Aankhon Ki Masti continue to trend on social media even today. Social media buzz The re-release may find new traction among younger audiences discovering the film for the first time. With Umrao Jaan already popular on Instagram for its music clips, the big-screen comeback could revive its digital appeal alongside its box office run.

Yash Raj Films (YRF) is officially developing the next chapter of one of Bollywood's most celebrated action series, and Ranbir Kapoor has been confirmed to take on the lead role in this high-octane reboot. According to reports from Pinkvilla , YRF's head Aditya Chopra has teamed up with screenwriter Shridhar Raghavan to work on the script. The report states, 'Aditya Chopra has been closely involved in developing the story and screenplay of Dhoom 4 with Shridhar Raghavan. They are currently working on the story draft that's worthy of the hype around the reboot with Dhoom 4.' Shridhar Raghavan, best known for writing hit YRF films like Pathaan, War, and Tiger 3, is expected to bring a fresh vision to the franchise. The aim is to create a narrative that not only lives up to the legacy of the previous films but also aligns with global action cinema standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alerta: Você tem zumbido no ouvido? A source from the Pinkvilla report noted, 'Ranbir is the apt choice for Dhoom 4, and the character is also designed keeping his aura and personality in mind. The new Dhoom film is being designed keeping the global action standards in mind, and the visual pallete, as also storytelling will be very different from the already established YRF Spy Universe.' Ranbir is reportedly excited to be part of the franchise, which has previously featured stars like John Abraham, Hrithik Roshan, and Aamir Khan in antagonist roles. The reboot marks a new direction for the series, with an emphasis on international-level visuals and a distinct storytelling approach. Ayan Mukerji Expected to Direct YRF is planning to begin filming Dhoom 4 in April 2026, with a target release date sometime in 2027. Talks are underway with director Ayan Mukerji to helm the project. Mukerji, who has previously worked with Kapoor on Wake Up Sid, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Brahmāstra, is expected to take charge of pre-production once War 2 is released on Independence Day 2025. If confirmed, this collaboration would mark yet another high-profile partnership between Mukerji and Kapoor. The team is looking to complete principal photography by the end of 2026. Ranbir's Tight Schedule Ahead of 'Dhoom 4' Before shifting focus to Dhoom 4, Kapoor has a packed lineup. He is currently working on Love and War, a Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. Following that, he is expected to begin filming the second part of Ramayana. Only after completing these two major projects will Kapoor begin work on Dhoom 4. In addition, he is also scheduled to appear in Brahmāstra 2 and Animal Park, both of which are at different stages of development. Originally launched in 2004, the Dhoom series redefined action cinema in India with its stylish heists, sleek motorcycles, and memorable antagonists. With Dhoom 4, the makers aim to push the envelope even further. While the reboot will retain the high-stakes action that the franchise is known for, it will also introduce a new narrative tone, distinct from the broader YRF Spy Universe.
