Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old had been highly tried since winning a Galway maiden last season, running in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst last autumn.
This term he has been campaigned in Group and Listed company before trying his hand in a handicap to no avail at Royal Ascot.
Against just three runners in this conditions race, however, he took command early in the straight under Wayne Lordan to down Johnny Murtagh's 1-4 favourite Nautical Force by two lengths at 3-1.
O'Brien's stable representative Chris Armstrong said: "The way the race worked out, it was a lovely race for him.
"In fairness to him, he has been dropped in the deep end from word go this year. He ran with credit behind Henri Matisse and Delacroix and was beaten five to six lengths behind proper Group One horses.
"Obviously, Johnny's horse brought a high level of form here. Wayne gave him a lovely ride and the race worked out for him beautifully.
"He's a horse we thought of as a stakes horse after Galway last year as a two-year-old, so hopefully this will do his confidence good and we will bring him back up to a stakes race over a mile and a-quarter and see how he goes."

Murtagh had already been on the mark with newcomer Zuheila in the Ardboyne Hotel Maiden.
Ben Coen nursed the Aga Khan Studs-owned three-year-old into the closing stages before getting down to business on the 5-2 shot to beat Ger Lyons' Washington Street by half a length.
Coen said: "She's a nice, big filly and bred to have a bit of speed. She has been doing things nice at home.
"You can see why she hasn't got to the track until now, she's a big girl but she did that nicely. She had a good look when she hit the front, but hopefully she can stay improving.
"She was (doing all her best work late) – she was green running down the hill and, when I hit the rising ground, she came good."

Emit to soar highest in O'Brien family battle at Gowran Park
Today's Gowran Park card will be the last chance for punters to pick winners on Irish shores before all attention turns to the west and the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Marble City Stakes (2.50) heads a competitive Flat card with plenty of betting opportunities. Restricted to three-year-olds only, Aidan O'Brien won the showpiece event 12 months ago and the Ballydoyle maestro will hold plenty of hopes again via Acapulco Bay. The Dubawi colt has scored just once in six starts, though, while Ronan Whelan's mount is 3lbs off his nearest rival on official ratings, with Emit expected to give him more than enough to think about as many of the 11 runners step up to 1m4f for the first time in their careers. The latter, trained by Joseph O'Brien, never landed a blow in a Group Three at Royal Ascot but Dylan Browne McMonagle's mount had been knocking on the door prior to that and he can get the job done.

Treble for Joseph O'Brien as Browne McMonagle claims 47th success of season
Highlight of an across-the-card treble for Joseph O'Brien and a 47th success of the season for Dylan Browne McMonagle, who was completing a double, North Coast turned over hot-pot Flushing Meadows in the Group 3 Japan Racign Association Tyros 2-Y-0 Stakes in Leopardstown. Third to the 30/100 favourite when both colts made their respective debuts at the Curragh, the Starman colt made all, had the favourite in trouble with two furlongs to race and stayed to score by six lengths, with Ryan Moore easing his mount, when clearly beaten, inside the final furlong. 'I was very impressed, particularly in the last hundred yards,' stated O'Brien. 'He's a smart colt, with a good attitude. We've campaigned him aggressively – this was his fourth run. We decided we'd make the favourite work for it and it worked out really well. 'The obvious race for him is to go straight for the National Stakes at the Curragh. And the Breeders Cup Juvenile might suit him well around the bend. I'm excited about his future.' Successful with hurdling debutant Claude (J J Slevin) in the Wexford opener, O'Brien also landed the Frank Conroy Irish BF 2-Y-0 Maiden with 12/1 shot Hardy Warrior who, building on an eye-catching debut at Killarney, made all to see off South island and favourite Montreal, who was slowly into his stride. 'We were very happy with his Killarney run – he was quite green and Declan (McDonogh) gave him a very positive review,' explained O'Brien. 'He put his experience to good use here, quickened up nicely and looks a nice colt. 'He should continue improving and is a solid, tough colt. We'll stick to a mile and he wouldn't want ground any faster than today. We might look at the 'Beresford' for him.' The Ballydoyle team, Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, had enjoyed better luck in the Group 3 Saudi Cup Silver Flash 2-Y-0 Stakes when Composing justified 4/9 favouritism in fine style. Soon in front, Moore dictated the pace on the Curragh maiden winner and, having quickened clear before the furlong-pole, she ran on well to triumph by three and a quarter lengths from Skydance. 'You'd have to be delighted with that,' said Aidan O'Brien, 'She's a lovely straight-forward filly. She won lovely at the Curragh for Wayne (Lordan) and Ryan loved her tonight – she was very professional. 'She'll go for the 'Debutante' at the Curragh (August 23) next and could be a filly for the Moyglare after that.' Carriganog filly Teewinot was an uneasy 13/8 favourite for the Irish EBF Median Sires Series 2-Y-0 Fillies maiden but was brushed aside by Stephen Thorne's debutante Mayflower, who overcame a tardy start and swooped late under Ben Coen (his 30th winner of the season) to score by a length and a quarter, in the colours of Shamrock Thoroughbreds. 'She came highly recommended by Robson Aguilar,' said Thorne. 'She's a big girl and this was an ideal place for her to start. She quickened well and looks a filly with a future.' Later, Dermot Weld stated, 'Tactics still win races,' after Chris Hayes partnered Alice Monet, winner of a recent 'optional claimer' at Fairyhouse, to a convincing all-the-way success in the Dublin To Bahrain Race Series 3-Y-0 Handicap, adding, 'This was a good opportunity and I think she'll develop into a stakes filly.' In Wexford, Phillip Enright took the riding honours, registering a double in the divisions of the WTW Willis Handicap Hurdle, on the Aengus King-trained joint-favourite Chosen Shant and twelve-year-old 25/1 shot Dontdooddson, trained by Darren Collins.

Just this week we saw 2-13 Royal Ascot runner-up Thesecretadversary beaten by a 28-1 outsider. But you'd hope there would be fewer chances for things to go so seismically wrong in Group 1s. And that's where John Gosden's Field Of Gold and Aidan O'Brien's Illinois come in. Both are currently odds-on for their respective races at next week's Glorious Goodwood. Field Of Gold, who perhaps should have won the 2,000 Guineas, and definitely did win the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes, is a best-price 1-2 to win the Sussex Stakes next Wednesday. Most read in Horse Racing His big market rival - and second-fav - Illinois was second to Trawlerman in last month's Ascot Gold Cup. But he is a proven Group-level performer - albeit he has always come up short in Group 1s - and last finished outside the top two in April 2024 - NINE races ago. He is a best-price 8-11 to win the 2m feature next Tuesday. There is a chance O'Brien could run recent brilliant Newmarket scorer Scandinavia instead. But this looks a golden opportunity for Illinois to get his Group 1, with 4-1 second-fav French Master moving up from handicaps. Backing shorties in a double like this wouldn't be my go-to method of punting. But if you put the pair together now you'd still get better than evens, with a £20 punt returning £48.44 with Ladbrokes.
