Holidaymakers face summer travel chaos as Glasgow Airport strikes confirmed this month
Holidaymakers in Scotland will face travel chaos this summer as strike action has been confirmed at Glasgow Airport this month.
Ambassadors, airside support officers, engineers and managers will down their tools in a two-day walkout in an ongoing dispute over pay. Around 100 workers are expected to take part in the industrial action.
Unite the Union, which represents the staff, said that 98.7 per cent of its members at the airport voted in favour of strikes after rejecting a four per cent pay rise. It claims to have made repeated offers to restart negotiations with management, however, it has been told that no new pay offer will be made.
Members will walk out for 48 hours from 6am on Thursday, July 24 until 6am on Saturday, July 26.
The disruption is expected to affect thousands of holidaymakers setting off on their summer getaways.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Summer strike action is now inevitable unless Glasgow Airport 's new owners come to their senses.
"We will support our members every step of the way in their fight for better jobs, pay and conditions.'
Pat McIlvogue, Unite industrial officer, said: ' Glasgow Airport Limited is making the lowest pay offer despite it being the most profitable company at the airport.
"It is the only company escalating a dispute and they seem to be spoiling for a fight rather than trying to resolve the dispute.
'We have just successfully resolved another pay dispute involving hundreds of ICTS workers at the airport.
"The latest deal adds to the growing list of companies at the airport where agreements have been secured through negotiation covering hundreds of workers.'
Elsewhere, more than 100 Swissport workers remain in a dispute over working rotas and work-life balance, plus health and safety concerns.
Workers provide ground handling services to many major airlines, including ticketing and baggage handling. A consultative ballot on a new offer made by Swissport to address these outstanding issues has been put to the workforce.
If this offer is rejected, Unite will move to open a full industrial action ballot.

Gatwick baggage screeners to strike from next week
A trade union has announced a strike at Gatwick airport from next week which it claims will put all departing flights at risk of disruption. Unite said baggage screeners employed by ICTS will walk out in a dispute over pay from August 22-26 – which includes a bank holiday weekend – and August 29 to September 2. The union said the workers are among the lowest paid at the West Sussex airport, earning 'just above the minimum wage'. Meanwhile, ICTS made a profit before tax of £6.1 million in 2024, a 46.9% increase compared to the previous year, according to the union. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'ICTS has more than enough money to offer these workers a fair pay rise. 'Not doing so is just corporate greed. 'ICTS' Gatwick workers will receive Unite's complete backing for as long as it takes during their strikes for fair pay.' Unite said 'all flights out of Gatwick will face disruption', and industrial action 'will intensify if the dispute is not resolved'. Gatwick was approached for a comment.

Dad misses £4k TUI holiday after 'damaged passport ripped in front of family'
"I can't believe she just sat there and ripped my passport instead of giving me the option to tear it off properly so she wouldn't have marked it." A dad claims his family had to go on their £4,000 TUI holiday without him due to an issue with his passport. Jimmy Gould was 'excited' to be travelling with his girlfriend Zowie Buckley, 35, his three kids and extended family to Lanzarote, Spain, for seven nights. However, the 48-year-old said check-in staff claimed his passport was 'damaged' due to a 10mm tear on the data page from where a sticker had been stuck during a previous flight. They said the document was too 'damaged' so he could not board, meaning Jimmy was forced to leave his 'crying' kids and girlfriend to jet off without him from East Midlands airport on Monday, July 28. A photo shows a small white tear covering part of the dad's face in his passport duplicate photo from where the boarding sticker was removed. Jimmy claims it was a member of boarding staff who had pulled off the sticker themselves, and not him, reports Birmingham Live. TUI confirmed passports with stickers on would not be allowed to fly but claimed their agents at East Midlands are trained not to remove any stickers off passports themselves. Jimmy, who lives in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, said: "It's a total nightmare and I'm absolutely fuming. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I'm sitting home alone while they're in Lanzarote gutted and they all want to come home because of the situation. One year, the passport officials put a sticker on the duplicate photo page. I've been away for six or seven years with no problem at all. "I got to the airport and passed all the passports over and a staff member pulled the sticker straight off and she ripped the page. It's a tiny little tear. She literally ripped my passport in front of us all and said 'you can't go'. I can't believe she just sat there and ripped my passport instead of giving me the option to tear it off properly so she wouldn't have marked it. "She looked at me and said 'this one's damaged and you can't use this passport now'. It's a tiny mark and the other page is fine. My kids started crying once they realised their dad couldn't go. They want their dad there. It's just terrible and I'm absolutely devastated. "I was so excited to make memories with my family this summer. My daughter is seven and I should be playing in the pool with her but instead I'm stuck at home on my own. They're miserable wanting their dad there. We have one holiday a year and you get excited." After unsuccessfully trying to apply for an emergency passport the dad is now stuck at home and has missed out on the holiday. Girlfriend Zowie admitted her holiday has been 'ruined' without having her partner there. Zowie said: "The holiday has been ruined. The experience has been awful as we never go anywhere unless we're together. "I'm anxious and worried about being in a foreign country on my own with three children and it has totally changed the atmosphere. All that money wasted and all the months saving to go away together to end up apart."
