British world No.733 denied £99k Wimbledon prize money despite his historic win

Daily Mirror30-06-2025
Oliver Tarvet saw off Leandro Riedi, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes on the opening day of Wimbledon, but the 21-year-old Brit won't be able to accept the prize money
Oliver Tarvet said it was a 'dream come true' to win his first ever match at Wimbledon, but his victory came with an unusual caveat.
The 21-year-old Brit, who is ranked No.733 in the world, saw off his opponent, Leandro Riedi, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes on the opening day of Wimbledon.

He had to come through three rounds of qualifying to earn his place at the All England Lawn Tennis Club and had never before played an ATP Tour-level event.

But he drew a decent crowd in the sweltering heat on court four and rose to the occasion, knocking out his Swiss opponent, who is ranked 506th in the world but was 117th as recently as August last year and is a previous runner-up at Surbiton.
Tarvet could now get an even more high-profile tie, with his win possibly granting him a second-round match against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is facing veteran Fabio Fognini on Centre Court on Monday afternoon.
'There's a lot of emotions,' Tarvet said. 'I'm just really overjoyed to be in this situation. All the hard work I've put in over the last few years has clearly paid off. I was just taking it match by match to see what I could do.
'This is my first tour level event – to come through qualifying and then win a first round at Wimbledon and maybe have the chance to play Carlos on Wednesday is truly incredible. It's a dream come true for me to play at Wimbledon and it's really special.'
Tarvet can't enjoy the financial rewards that come with his success, however. The youngster is a University of San Diego student and has developed his game in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) system. That comes with strings attached. Under NCAA rules, players are restricted in how much they can claim from professional tournaments.
Tarvet revealed before the tournament that he is only allowed to take home $10,000 (£7,290) in profit every year, as well as any expenses incurred during the events. That means he will likely have to forfeit the £99,000 in prize money he has earned for reaching the second round.
"There's been complaints about it but I don't want to speak too much about it, I don't want to overstep anything,' he said before the match. "In my opinion, I've worked hard to get this money and I don't really feel like it's undeserved, the money that I've got. So I think it would be good to see a change in the rules."
Tarvet is the first male British qualifier for Wimbledon since Alexander Ward in 2017. He beat Terence Atmane in round one before prevailing 6-3 6-2 against Canada's Alexis Galarneau and defeating 29th seed Alexander Blockx of Belgium 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-1 to progress to the main draw.

Chaiwa hopes Champions League experience will help him at Hibernian

Miguel Chaiwa believes his experience of playing in last season's Champions League can help him thrive at Hibernian. The 21-year-old midfielder made an eye-catching debut for the Hibees in Sunday's Premier Sports Cup win away to Livingston after joining earlier this month from Young Boys. Zambia international Chaiwa featured as a substitute in the Swiss side's Champions League play-off win over Galatasaray a year ago and then in their group-phase matches against Celtic and Red Star Belgrade in January. 'It has helped me a lot,' Chaiwa said. 'We played good teams in the Champions League. 'I've got one or two experiences playing against top teams, so it was a really, really good platform for me.' Chaiwa made his Hibs debut on the same day that another player recruited from the Swiss top flight marked his first start for David Gray's side with a goal. Thibault Klidje last month became the Edinburgh club's record signing when he arrived from Luzern for a seven-figure transfer fee. The Togolese forward was restricted to four substitute appearances prior to his maiden start on Sunday as Gray aims to break him into Scottish football gently, but Chaiwa expects his fellow African to make a big impact at Easter Road. 'We played against each other in Switzerland,' he said. 'I knew him personally, he's one of the good guys and has a little bit of shyness in him. 'But I know what he's capable of doing. He's energetic. He can run, he can jump, even though he's short. But he's willing to give everything. 'I think he will do well at Hibs once he gets a run of games, absolutely.' Chaiwa is delighted to have kicked off his Hibs career and is eager to play a part in Thursday's Conference League play-off first leg at home to Legia Warsaw. 'I'm hoping to help the team and my team-mates like they did today,' he said. 'I'm really, really excited to be involved.' Amir Khan announces latest boxing venture as surprise name returns

The former world champion retired from the sport back in 2022, but appears to still be involved in boxing following a recent announcement Amir Khan has confirmed his latest move in boxing after teaming up with Balmoral Group Promotions to promote a historic event in Nigeria - which is set to feature Canelo Alvarez's former opponent. ‌ On Wednesday, October 1st, Nigerian Independence Day, an iconic moment for African boxing will be showcased to the world - with the event set to feature international icons alongside local talent to show off the pride and potential of Nigeria on the global stage. It comes after Nigeria's premier boxing promoter linked up with Khan's AK Promotions. ‌ The major fight night will take place in Lagos, Nigeria and will be broadcast live on DAZN. Khan - a former world champion and CEO of AK Promotions - said: "I'm thrilled to bring world-class boxing and the world's eyes onto Nigeria for the first time. This event is about more than just fights - it's about inspiring a new generation and showcasing the heart and skill of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars. Lagos is ready to shine." ‌ Dr. Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group Promotions, added: "This historic fight night on Nigerian Independence Day marks a monumental moment for African boxing. We are proud to partner with AK Promotions to showcase Nigeria's immense talent and passion to the world, celebrating our heritage and potential on a global stage." Following the announcement, several big names are set to feature on the card, including Former WBA light-heavyweight title-holder Rocky Fielding, who will be taking on cruiserweight contender Brandon Glanton. Fielding, 38, has not fought since suffering a crushing defeat to Dan Azeez back in 2022. The defeat came four years after losing to 'Saul' Alvarez in a showdown for the WBA (Regular) super-middleweight title. Speaking of his return, Fielding said: "After three years out, I'm back with a fire to claim my place at the top. Beating Glanton in Lagos will show everyone I'm ready for a world title shot. The cruiserweight division is wide open, and I'm coming for it all." As for Glanton, the American is set to return for the first time since losing to Chris Billam-Smith on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn back in April. In the co-main event, African legend and former IBF world champion Richard Commey - who has famously fought the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez - will take on Ray Seitzhanov. Former British, Commonwealth, and European champion Dan Azeez is also set to feature on the historic card. The event, titled 'Chaos in the Ring' marks the first time world-class boxing will be staged in Nigeria, with Khan declaring that the show will 'inspire a new generation' and shine a spotlight on African boxing talent. Earlier this year, Khan made the move into promoting his beloved sport after staging an event in Ghana. The former world champion relaunched AK Promotions for the event - which took place in June. The card saw heavyweight star Anthony Joshua in attendance, supporting the historic night of boxing and was even pictured with Khan - despite their feud.

Francis Ngannou provides update on Deontay Wilder fight and MMA return

Francis Ngannou has been out of action for nearly a year, but the PFL star has no plans to return to the SmartCage as he looks to secure a boxing match with Deontay Wilder Francis Ngannou has expressed his desire to face Deontay Wilder in the ring, following the PFL star's admission that talks between the two camps are set to take place. ‌ Ngannou, who left UFC two years ago, signed a lucrative deal with PFL but not before dipping his toes into the world of professional boxing. He made his debut in October 2023 against Tyson Fury, in what was expected to be an easy win for the 'Gypsy King'. ‌ However, Ngannou proved to be a formidable opponent, even managing to floor the Brit, although he ultimately lost by split decision after a thrilling bout. He returned to the ring in March 2024 to face Anthony Joshua, but this time the fight was more one-sided, with Joshua delivering a knockout blow in the second round. ‌ In October, Ngannou made his PFL debut, defeating Renan Ferreira in the first round. Despite it being nearly a year since his last fight, the 38-year-old has no immediate plans to return to the SmartCage, reports All Out Fighting. Instead, he is setting his sights on a showdown with Wilder. The heavyweight from Cameroon has been vocal about wanting to fight the 'Bronze Bomber' and it appears that discussions between the two teams will soon take place. When questioned about a potential return to MMA this year, Ngannou dismissed the idea, stating that his focus is firmly on boxing. "There's nothing yet, I don't think they have an opening for me, so we will wait," Ngannou told Ariel Helwani about his return to MMA. "We still have time. Meanwhile, we're trying on the Deontay Wilder fight." When pressed about whether Ngannou fancies a bout with the American heavyweight, the 38-year-old responded: "Yes. I do." He continued: "We haven't engaged personally, but it's gonna be soon. We are setting some things up, but I keep training. I'm training." Wilder is considered the third pillar of the division's elite triumvirate, alongside Fury and Joshua, before Oleksandr Usyk entered the heavyweight scene. The 'Bronze Bomber' was a devastating presence, delivering numerous savage knockout triumphs as champion before falling to Fury. Following his second defeat to Fury in 2021, the boxing veteran bounced back with victory over Robert Helenius, only to endure consecutive setbacks against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. He secured his first triumph in almost three years this past June, overcoming Tyrrell Anthony Herndon. ‌ In the same interview with Helwani, Ngannou later asked if the fight is his top choice across all sports and opponents. 'I would say so, since the Jon Jones fight is off," said Ngannou. "It [the Jones fight] cannot be a part of my top choice.' Both Ngannou and Jon Jones have been tipped to fight each other for quite some time, but nothing has ever materialised. Regarding the potential clash, Ngannou admitted: 'No, it never got off the ground. For sure, the UFC doesn't want anything to do with co-promotion stuff. I think even Turki [Alalshikh] tried to make that fight happen. They don't want it.' On the American's retirement, Ngannou speculated: 'Maybe that was his own maneuver of negotiation. Retirement doesn't mean anything. If he decides tomorrow that he's fighting, then that retirement is void. It means nothing. Nobody will stop him if he keeps training. That doesn't change anything.' When is Francis Ngannou's next fight? It's been nearly a year since Ngannou last stepped into the ring. The PFL recently hosted two historic events in Africa, and Ngannou played a significant role in introducing MMA to his cherished continent. However, many were left puzzled as to why he did not participate in either of the two cards. Explaining why he did not fight, he said: "For example, like if you want to know what exactly is the reason why I wasn't there. I wasn't very okay with the first PFL Africa event seeming to be like an undercard. "Quoting him, we work a lot for that, PFL Africa, but I hoped PFL Africa's debut would have at least have its glory, its moment. But that wasn't my decision and I wasn't down for it. I express my feeling to them." With Ngannou apparently keen to take on Wilder, a potential clash could happen before the year ends. The 'Bronze Bomber' disclosed prior to his comeback that he's aiming for two fights this year and remains willing to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.
