Cllr Wayne Carpenter Named New Mayor of Neath Port Talbot
Councillor Wayne Carpenter has been sworn in as the new Mayor of Neath Port Talbot for 2025/26.
Melin born Cllr Carpenter (Neath East), is the son of a Metal Box worker father and a mother who helped provide school meals in Neath for a large part of her life.
For many years Cllr Carpenter administered youth arts and music for the former West Glamorgan County Council and was the administrator for the annual Margam Festival.
A committed Christian, he later became a professional singer, recording four albums and touring the UK, Southern Ireland, the Channel Islands, South Africa and Romania.
After becoming pastor of his home church, Bethel Elim, in Melin, he was ordained as a reverend, serving in Neath for 12 years then in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil for ten years.
As Regional Youth Director for his denomination for eight years, he encouraged, trained and developed youth work in 42 churches in Wales and the Southwest Midlands. In 2009 he was given the Citizen of The Year Award by Neath Town Council for work with young people and the elderly.
He was sworn in by Neath Port Talbot Council Chief Executive Frances O'Brien at a ceremony as part of the council's Annual General Meeting at Margam Orangery, where he paid tribute to the work during the past year of outgoing Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Matthew Crowley and his wife Michelle Crowley.
His Mayoress this year will be his wife, Carol. They have two children, Claire and Christian, and six grandchildren Grace, Layla, Jacob, Reuben, Faith and Isabella.
Cllr Carpenter will raise funds during his mayoral year for these two causes:
Type-1-Derful – A local charity under the umbrella of Diabetes UK, it supports children and their families who have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at a young age, organising summer camps and Christmas parties and helping finance some of the treatment needed by children with Type 1 diabetes.
Alzheimer's Society Cymru – Another Welsh charity it seeks to support those diagnosed with Alzheimer's and their families.
Cllr Carpenter said:
'It's a great honour and privilege for us to be inaugurated as Mayor and Mayoress of Neath Port Talbot Council.
'This authority recognises the importance of economic prosperity and works towards making Neath Port Talbot a thriving, forward looking, confident place where people want to live, work and visit – a place where jobs and businesses can flourish.
'I could never let this moment pass without thanking my wonderful wife and your new Mayoress Carol. We've been married for 50 years this year and can't think of a better way to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary by becoming your new Mayor and Mayoress.'
Also sworn in at the ceremony were this year's Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress Cllr Alan Lockyer and his wife Jan Lockyer.

Glasgow couple to abseil 30m down Kelpies for SSAFA
Carol and Charles Diaper, from St George's Cross in Glasgow, will climb the inside of one of the Kelpies before abseiling down the 30-metre-high sculpture on June 27, as part of the SSAFA Kelpie Experience. The event raises funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. It offers participants a guided aerial climb up the world's largest equine sculptures, with the option to descend via a free-hanging abseil or "Quick Flight" rope drop. This challenge marks yet another adventure for the brave couple who are both PADI Rescue Divers. Carol recently completed her 500th dive in Fiji last year and has raised more than £50,000 for charity through fire walks, freefall parachuting, Everest Base Camp treks, and a 500km cycle ride in China. Charles's uncle served as a Group Captain in the RAF and was Commandant of the now-closed Headley Court rehabilitation hospital. Designed for families, schools, and children aged ten and above (with under 17s accompanied by an adult), the event places a strong emphasis on safety. Ithell Colquhoun: ‘Between Worlds'
Ithell Colquhoun didn't sit still, visually or spiritually. This exhibition attempts to make sense of a sprawling oeuvre that engages with an incredibly wide gamut of spiritual, religious and formal ideas. Though not always coherent, it reveals her to be an artist of immense talent and invention. Across her engagements with the occult, Hindu Tantra, Christian mysticism and the Jewish Kabbalah, Colquhoun's eye for composition remains a constant, and might be the best part of a sometimes confusing show. Born in 1906 in India, where her father worked in the British colonial administration, Colquhoun moved to Cheltenham at a young age and went on to study art at the Slade, where she developed an interest in the esoteric. She was a card-carrying surrealist until 1940, when the group's British leader E.L.T. Mesens declared that members shouldn't join other societies. A practicing occultist, she took her cue to leave. Throughout the exhibition, various strains of surrealism and ways of understanding the world serve as a kind of tasting menu for Colquhoun. Here, in a relatively small-scale restaging of her broader exhibition at Tate St. Ives, the jumps between various artistic mediums and grand ideas can be jarring. Spanning painting, drawing and a number of more experimental techniques, the diversity of Colquhoun's output seems to work against the constraints of the exhibition. What might be an expansive exploration often feels like a whistle-stop tour. Standout moments are deeply – if quietly – impactful. The painting Scylla (1938), for example, depicts two tubular and fleshy rocks emerging from the ocean. They meet underwater among a tangle of coral. It's as suggestive as it is strange, reflecting the Surrealist idea of a 'double image', where one thing masquerades as another. A phallic interpretation is tempting, but a second look yields something more elegant and subtle: a pair of legs emerging from the water, seen from above as though painted from the point of view of someone sitting in a bathtub. A transatlantic counterpart, perhaps, to Frida Kahlo's surrealist masterpiece What the Water Gave Me, which was painted in the same year. The formal virtuosity that Scylla demonstrates is constant through Colquhoun's practice. This clearly comes naturally to her, as is evident in some beautiful small-scale examples of her experiments with new techniques. The symmetrical, rainbow-coloured Rorschach tests yielded by her 'Stillomancy' technique and the ghostly shapes applied using Fumage – holding paper above a flame and painting with its smoke – are highlights. Elsewhere, a tarot deck is adorned with psychedelic abstract constellations formed by pouring brightly coloured enamel paint. Bonsoir (1939) is the work that best demonstrates this talent for composition. Across a grid of 42 small-scale, simplistic photographic collages (some comprising only one image), Colquhoun tells an ambiguous story of attraction between two women. She crops, clips and combines images with the keen graphic sensibility of a pop artist. Though this show might bite off more than it can chew conceptually, it succeeds in communicating Colquhoun's impressive abilities as an image-maker.

Huge EastEnders twist as another major couple get engaged
This article contains spoilers for tomorrow's episode of EastEnders, which airs Friday at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Wedding bells are set to ring out across Albert Square once again, as a beloved couple decided to tie the knot. I am, of course, referring to Patrick and Yolande Trueman (Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter), who recently won the British Soap Award for Best On-Screen Partnership. What a way to cap off the celebrations! Throughout this week's episodes of the soap, we've seen the couple struggle with intimacy in the wake of a horrific incident. Some of the serial's most harrowing scenes ever aired last year, when church-leader Pastor Clayton (Howard Saddler) sexually assaulted Yolande in a store room at the community centre. She bravely spoke up about her ordeal to friend Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe), and then found the courage to report his crime to the police. Unfortunately, due to a lack of evidence, there was little that they could do. However, soon after, a second survivor of his abuse came forward, with the CPS charging him with two counts of sexual assault. Their bravery was noted by a third woman, who also came forward, prompting Clayton to barge his way into Yolande's house in an attempt to get her to drop the charges. Later that night, the police arrived and she assumed he'd spread more vicious lies about her. They were actually there to reveal that Clayton had taken his own life. Since then, Yolande has tried to rebuild her life and reconnect with her Christian faith – something which she abandoned following the sexual assault.
