Widespread condemnation following the killing of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza

Organisations have condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists and a freelance journalist in Gaza on Sunday.
Five Al Jazeera staff, correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, and freelance journalist Mohammad al-Khaldi, were killed.
Reportedly, Al-Jazeera journalists were killed in a targeted strike on a tent used by media near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, while Al-Khaldi was killed in a nearby tent.

In a statement, Al Jazeera Media Network condemned in the strongest terms the targeted assassination of its correspondents and photographers 'by the Israeli occupation forces in yet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom'.
'As Al Jazeera Media Network bids farewell to yet another group of its finest journalists, who boldly and courageously documented the plight of Gaza and its people since the onset of the war, it holds the Israeli occupation forces and government responsible for deliberately targeting and assassinating its journalists,' the network said.
The South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) said: 'SANEF has, on numerous occasions, unequivocally condemned the brutality of the Israeli military in specifically targeting journalists and systematically denying other international journalists the ability to report live from Gaza. This pattern of behaviour is a grave threat to the public's right to information.
'SANEF calls upon all relevant international bodies and governments to exert maximum pressure to ensure the immediate cessation of hostilities against journalists, guarantee their safety, and hold accountable those responsible for these heinous crimes. The world relies on journalists to bear witness and report the truth, and their protection must be paramount.'
Southern African Freelancers' Association (Safrea) chairperson Nathi Gule said: 'While we do not comment on the political or military circumstances of any conflict, we strongly condemn the loss of life among members of the media who are working in dangerous environments to inform the public. Journalists should never be targeted, and their safety must be safeguarded at all times,' Gule said.
He said the killing of media personnel anywhere in the world is unacceptable and undermines the vital role they play in holding truth to power, documenting events, and providing accurate information to the public.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Regional Director Sara Qudah said: 'Israel is murdering the messengers. Israel wiped out an entire news crew. It has made no claims that any of the other journalists were terrorists. That's murder. Plain and simple.
'It is no coincidence that the smears against al-Sharif — who has reported night and day for Al Jazeera since the start of the war — surfaced every time he reported on a major development in the war, most recently the starvation brought about by Israel's refusal to allow sufficient aid into the territory.'
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned with 'force and anger the alleged assassination of Al-Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif by the Israeli army in a targeted strike against a tent sheltered near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, which killed five other media professionals and injured three others'.
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) general secretary Anthony Bellanger said: 'After a smear campaign against Gaza's journalists, Israel has killed five Al Jazeera staff in a tent housing journalists. The deliberate targeting of journalists is a war crime, and Israeli leaders must be held accountable for their heinous actions. We condemn in the strongest possible terms this deliberate killing of our colleagues and we stand in solidarity with all staff at Al Jazeera and our colleagues working in Gaza under such unacceptable circumstances'.
Bellanger added: 'UN Member states must support a binding convention at the UN level. This convention should protect journalists and ensure accountability for the perpetrators of crimes against journalists.'

The department receives an allocation of R187 million but still has to dip into its budget to cover the rest of the funding for approximately 300 amakhosi and izinduna in the province. Velenkosini Hlabisa, the minister of CoGTA, announced in May 2025 that the Constitutional Court ruled to extend the validity of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act (TKLA) for a further two years. Hlabisa explained that the Concourt has granted supplementary, just, and equitable relief to prevent the imminent expiry of the suspension period related to the declaration of constitutional invalidity of the TKLA. 'The declaration of invalidity of the TKLA has been suspended until 29 May 2027, allowing additional time for the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill to be concluded,' he said. This two-year extension enables CoGTA and Parliament to conduct thorough consultations and finalise the legislative process. Hlabisa has requested the Department of Traditional Affairs to intensify efforts to expedite the Bill's completion. He added that the TKLB is a critical piece of legislation. It seeks to formally recognise the Khoi and San communities and their leadership structures, while also addressing the deficiencies of the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act, No. 41 of 2003. Once enacted, the Bill will provide a legal framework to recognize and regulate Traditional and Khoi-San leadership institutions, clearly outlining their roles, responsibilities, and engagement with the government. This represents both a responsibility and an opportunity to promote inclusive governance. Dr Joey Krishnan, acting HOD of CoGTA, stated at the legislature that processes are under way in the department to prepare for the elections. 'The quotation we received two years ago was R47 million as a province just to run the elections. We are busy working on it. We could use the Electoral Commission of South Africa or an election agency. The department had engaged an election agency previously for this purpose, and then the court challenge came along,' she explained. On the recognition of izinduna, she explained that the amakhosi nominate izinduna and not CoGTA. Once an induna is nominated, it has to go through to the provincial executive council for approval and recognition. 'When that happens, it is gazetted. It is only at the time of gazetting that CoGTA will then put the izinduna on the payroll. We now have a system in place where amakhosi and izinduna are comfortable with the headcount,' she said. Krishnan said that the amahhosi provides CoGTA with a monthly update on izinduna. 'We are undertaking the current confirmation of all izinduna. We have completed eThekwini, Ugu, and Amajuba municipalities. We went to the Cabinet a week ago. We are now recognising 35 izinduna through that process. We hope to have that concluded in this financial quarter. We are going through per district to fast-track the process,' she explained.

Govender brothers face trial for murder at Durban High Court

Image: Nomonde Zondi The murder accused Govender brothers, Darren and Ferrel, who are owners of a security company, Pro-Secure, will be going for their pre-trial conference at the Durban High Court later this year. This is after they made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday morning, where they were served with their indictments. The brothers were arrested in January 2025 for the murder of Durban businessman Shailen Singh. Singh was shot dead at Umhlanga Ridge on December 29, 2024. The cause of his death was multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso. The State is alleging that the murder was pre-planned by the brothers, with Ferrel identified as the shooter. Ferrel is also facing 14 charges: murder, two counts of assault, two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, five counts of crimen injuria, a data message that threatens violence, attempted murder, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. According to the State, Ferrel was previously divorced, and at some stage in 2024, he got into a relationship with Varushka Maharaj. 'Maharaj was previously romantically involved with Byron Moodley,' the State said. On May 18, 2024, Ferrel called Moodley, swore at him, and threatened him with violence. Moodley ended the call, and when he later called Ferrel, he threatened his life. In June, while Moodley was at Cubana, he was confronted by Ferrel and a companion. They both assaulted Moodley by shoving and kicking him. On July 4, Moodley applied for a protection order against Ferrel; however, attempts to serve him with it were unsuccessful. 'On July 5, Ferrel communicated with Moodley via a messaging service and again threatened Moodley's life and swore at him. This continued on July 6 and 7,' the State alleges. Moreover, the State alleges that Ferrel was romantically involved with Salona Ramrutton/Kisten. Ramrutton/ Kisten was residing in one of Ferrel's houses at Kindlewood Estate, where Singh also resided. At some stage, Ferrel became aware that Ramrutton/Kisten had been involved in a sexual relationship with Singh. 'This resulted in a strain in their relationship, which resulted in verbal and physical abuse of her,' the State said. On December 21, 2024, the State alleges that Ferrel assaulted her, and she sought medical treatment. The following day, Ferrel requested Ramrutton/Kisten to visit him, and she obliged. He assaulted her, armed himself with an unlicensed firearm, and fired shots at her. 'Although she was not struck by the bullets, she was thereafter admitted into the hospital with serious injuries,' the State alleges. Additionally, the State alleges that Ferrel, who was enraged with Singh having an affair with Ramrutton/Kisten, conspired with Darren to kill him. The brothers will appear at the High Court on November 13.

Judge throws out explosive allegations against ANC veteran Mathews Phosa
Dr Mathews Phosa cleared of harassment allegations by North Gauteng High Court Image: Cindy Waxa The North Gauteng High Court has dismissed a case against ANC veteran Dr Mathews Phosa, which included serious allegations of harassment, unlawful surveillance, and manipulation of the legal and media systems. Earlier this week, the court rejected a claim brought by Jan Hendrik Stephanus Venter, who described himself as a former employee of Phosa. Venter sought R25 million in damages for alleged emotional trauma, reputational harm, and ongoing threats to his safety and dignity. On Tuesday, Judge Amien J ruled in favour of Phosa, with no order as to costs. Speaking to IOL on Thursday, Phosa said he would not dignify Venter with a response, stating that the matter lacked relevance. He added that he had previously warned Venter, who is currently serving a jail sentence in Pretoria. 'My comment is no comment. I will not give this matter any relevance, because there's no relevance at all,' said Phosa. In an urgent application filed with the court, Venter detailed what he described as a pattern of malicious conduct. In his founding affidavit, he recounted an incident that he claimed marked the start of this behaviour. 'Before a meeting at the offices of Phosa's colleague, Ulrich Roux, I was taken into a bathroom and forced to strip naked under the pretext that I might have been wearing surveillance devices,' he stated in the court papers. Next Stay Close ✕ Venter claimed that despite laying criminal charges against a second respondent, the case went nowhere, which he attributed to Phosa's alleged legal connections and influence. He further accused Phosa of orchestrating damaging media campaigns, including arranging for legal papers to be served on him while he was incarcerated. He alleged this was done to falsely implicate him in a defamation case linked to the book Predator Politics. He also claimed that Phosa facilitated the publication of an article that falsely described him as a 'secret weapon' in Phosa's legal battles — a portrayal he called a 'malicious manipulation of facts' designed to discredit him. 'Only Dr Phosa could have supplied that false information to the journalist, as I had no access to media or communications while incarcerated,' Venter alleged. Additionally, Venter said Phosa made unfulfilled promises of financial and legal support, which he believed formed part of a pattern of betrayal and exploitation. 'I have lost all income, assets and savings; I cannot find meaningful employment due to the reputational damage. I have been left without food, transport, housing security or medication,' he said, adding that his mental health had severely deteriorated as a result. IOL News
