‘Tremendous resource': Woman recognized in West Carrollton for helping homeless
During the Feb. 25 West Carrollton City Council Meeting, West Carrollton police recognized Kathi Parker with the Citizen Recognition Award. Private citizens are awarded the CRA for their achievement or action that benefits the community or department in an exceptional manner.
According to the department, Parker has operated the South Dayton Emergency Response Team for roughly 6 years. The SDERT provides assistance to individuals and families who are in need or crisis, especially those who are homeless or their place of living is damaged or destroyed.
During the 2024 Christmas season, Parker's organization collected and distributed gifts and household items for over 150 families, which includes 447 children. SDERT also provided places for people who are in need places to stay outside of the cold.
Parker is said to distribute food from restaurants and private donors to the homeless population. She also frequently gives warm clothes, socks and shoes to those in need.
According to police, the SDERT distributed the following on a single day in November 2024:
420 packages of hand and foot warmers
139 hats and pairs of gloves
76 homeless bags with emergency food and toiletries
42 blankets
30 scarves
23 coats
19 boxes of food
7 tents
2 sleeping bags
The organization's operator was also recently contacted by Sub Zero Mission in northern Ohio, a nonprofit group which helps homeless, especially veterans, stay warm. SZM contacted Parker wanting to partner with her, as they heard what her organization has been doing and called her a 'tremendous resource' to the community, according to police.

Man Pulls Into Parking Lot, Can't Believe What Crawls Out From Under Car
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A man returning home from work began pulling into his reserved parking spot, only to realize something had claimed it, which led him to gain a new, furry friend. Michael Gassaway of New Mexico began turning into his parking spot when he spotted a tiny animal lying in the middle of it. He originally thought the animal was dead or dying, or even a stuffed toy, he told Newsweek via Reddit. Being halfway into the spot, he carefully maneuvered around it and then got out of his vehicle to investigate. As it turns out, the animal wasn't dead, but instead an orange kitten fast asleep. He went to the building managers, who came outside with him, and after some discussion, Gassaway decided to keep the kitten, which came with a bit of a learning curve for him. "I had to take a trip to Petco and research how to take care of a kitten," he said. "I started bottle feeding him and taking care of him, which initially was a lot of work, but has been worth it." Fast forward three months, and his kitty, dubbed Parker due to where he discovered him, is thriving. He said Park is "a lot of fun to have around." Gassaway, known on Reddit as @mgphotographs) shared Parker's rescue story with a video montage of his progression on the subreddit channel r/cats. He continued to grow and regain strength during his "journey to three months." The clip shows him playing, snuggling and hopping around happily in Gassaway's care. "They said he looked healthy and told me he was 10-14 days old." However, Gassaway went with 10 days due to him hitting developmental stages— such as litter box usage, walking and eating solid foods—later than expected. Viewer Reactions Within two days, the Reddit post amassed over 25,000 upvotes and 344 comments, as users applauded his selflessness. "Looks like you've earned a fantastic companion with your kindness. What a precious little fur ball," wrote one person. Another commented: "Nicely done, they look in great health. Well done for saving them." A third user said: "Omg, thriving and growing stronger every day. Thank you!!!" Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? Dog stuck in drainage pipe rescued by fire crews
(PARKER, Colo.) — A dog found itself stuck – literally, after it somehow made its way inside a drainage pipe at the Parker Water Treatment Facility. According to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR), on Saturday, June 21, firefighters with South Metro Fire Rescue responded to the treatment facility around 9:27 a.m. for the animal rescue. The dog had become trapped in a drainage pipe, with only its head visible above ground. According to HSPPR, some humans found the dog after hearing it bark, and an Animal Enforcement Officer was sent out to help. The officer then called the fire department to assist in the rescue of the pup. Fire crews arrived to find the dog trapped. South Metro Fire Rescue said the dog appeared scared but alert. They positioned the aerial bucket to access the dog's location and then performed a 'safe, controlled rescue.' 'Fortunately, the dog did not appear to be injured,' South Metro Fire Rescue wrote. 'At this time, it's unknown how the dog entered the pipe or how long it had been trapped.' After the pup was rescued, he had a bath — twice. The Animal Enforcement Officer also gave the dog's owner a call, and both were reunited. 'Thank you, Officer Mauerman (even though you betrayed me with a bath), and thank you to the amazing crew at South Metro Fire Rescue for rescuing this very goofy, very curious, very stuck pup,' HSPPR wrote via Facebook. 'I may be a little ridiculous, but thanks to you, I'm safe, I'm clean, and I'm home. And I definitely learned my lesson! No more swimming in smelly mystery lakes, pinky paw promise.'
