Atalanta fan stabbed to death in clashes with Inter supporters, police confirm
The groups of supporters clashed in a pub in Bergamo on Saturday night after one of the Inter supporters chanted provocatively, the head of the Carabinieri office in Bergamo Carmelo Beringheli, said.
The confrontation continued in a street near the Atalanta stadium and escalated into violence when a man identified as an Inter supporter stabbed the Atalanta fan, Beringheli said, adding that emergency services arrived swiftly but were unable to save his life. The Atalanta fan who died has been identified as Riccardo Claris.
A male in his late teens had been arrested and said he acted to protect his brother, Beringheli added.
Atalanta fans unfurled a banner at the start of their 4-0 Serie A win at Monza on Sunday in memory of the murdered fan, which read: 'Claris Ovunque con noi' (Claris everywhere with us).
'What happened to our fan must never happen again,' Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini said in a press conference after the match.

Ollie Watkins stance on Man Utd transfer after Benjamin Sesko bid
Ollie Watkins is keen on a move to Manchester United if the club are unable to sign Benjamin Sesko, according to reports. United have now tabled a €85 million (£73.8m) bid to sign Sesko from RB Leipzig but the Bundesliga side are also considering a rival offer from Newcastle. Sesko is yet to make a final decision over his future, although reports in Slovenia last Friday had suggested that the 22-year-old has opted to join Newcastle. United have alternative options to Sesko, who scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga last season, if he rejects a move to Old Trafford and Watkins is on the club's shortlist. An approach was made to Aston Villa last month but United were told that the 29-year-old is not for sale. Villa also rejected a £60m bid for Watkins from Arsenal in the closing stages of the January transfer window. According to The Sun, Watkins believes now is the right time to leave, while Villa would consider a £50m offer for their striker, who scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season. More Trending The report adds that United have also shortlisted Samu Aghehowa, who scored 27 goals for Porto last term and came close to joining Chelsea a year ago. Benfica's 26-year-old forward, Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored 30 goals last season, is also on United's radar. United have also been offered Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic but reports in Italy claim that the Serie A club have been informed that Sesko is United's priority target. Ruben Amorim could also have the option of signing Nicolas Jackson as Chelsea are open to selling the 24-year-old for £80m. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Serie A referees to announce VAR decisions live in stadiums
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Serie A referees will begin announcing VAR decisions live in stadiums and on television starting next season, referee designator Gianluca Rocchi told Italian media on Tuesday. Rocchi described the move as a significant step forward in communication between referees and the public, saying the aim was to make officiating decisions quicker and clearer. "We have a select group of officials and we want to ensure the language is as uniform as possible so that decisions can be clear to the public," Rocchi said. The concept of referees explaining decisions to the crowd has also been explored in countries including England and Germany. The Serie A season kicks off on August 23.

Ademola Lookman goes on strike at Atalanta over ‘broken promises' for transfer
Ademola Lookman has gone on strike as he attempts to force through a move to Inter, but Atalanta have insisted he will not be sold to another Italian club. The Nigeria forward did not attend pre-season training for the second day in a row after handing in a transfer request last weekend, when Lookman also published a statement in which he accused Atalanta of 'broken promises'. An improved Inter bid worth up to €45m (£32.1m) including add-ons was rejected last week after a €40m offer for the 27-year-old was turned down. Inter are expected to return with a bid that matches Atalanta's €50m valuation after Lookman again failed to attend a scheduled individual training session at his club's training ground in Zingonia on Tuesday. 'Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed, sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,' Lookman wrote on Instagram on Sunday. 'As a result and after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and I feel that enough is enough.' The Atalanta chief executive, Luca Percassi, has confirmed the club have an agreement to allow Lookman to leave this summer but he said that was only for a 'top' club outside Serie A. 'The pact with Lookman was made a year ago, when we refused a €20m offer from PSG,' he said. 'The club is always careful when evaluating the value and timing of its players, but as always, it is Atalanta, the club, that decides.' Napoli and Atlético Madrid are also believed to be interested in Lookman, who came through Charlton's academy and has also played for Everton, Fulham and Leicester in England. He joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022. The reigning African player of the year helped them win the Europa League last year and scored 15 times in Serie A last season.
