Caring parents killed and young children severely hurt in horror crash while driving eldest son to college
At around 1.20pm on Friday, Maria Nunney, 50, and 55-year-old Donald Nunney, who had been driving, both died after their car veered off the road and smashed into a tree in North Carolina.
The couple, who had been longtime teachers in Cleveland, were driving with two of their children, 15-year-old Lucia and 9-year-old Leo, to drop off their eldest son, Noah, 19, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Noah was following in a car behind them and watched the horror unfold in front of him.
Both of their youngest children survived the devastating crash but are in hospital recovering from severe injuries and 'major trauma,' a GoFundMe for the Nunney family said.
Noah had been driving behind the car and pulled over after it crashed into a wooded area as emergency crews rushed to his family.
Maria Nunney tragically died at the scene of the accident, 19 News reported. Donald, however, was airlifted to a hospital in Chapel Hill where he later succumbed to his injuries, State Troopers said.
The cause of the crash remains unclear and the investigation remains ongoing.
'It's hard to say what caused it. No other vehicles were involved, so there will be no charges,' North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Tyler Tucker told CBS 17.
'They were just incredible teachers, loving and attentive and committed parents,' Cleveland Teachers Union President Shari Obrenski told the outlet.
'They active in the community. Their loss has hit everyone so hard that it is unimaginable for their family and their children. So shocking and heartbreaking and just devastating.'
Noah is sat beside his siblings in hospital while the young family's 'entire world has changed,' Tucker told 19 News.
Both children are expected to make a full recovery.
Principal Lennox Thompson of Joseph M. Gallagher School, where Donald Nunney was a language arts teacher, said in a statement obtained by WCNC: 'With a heavy heart I regret to inform you that Mr. Don Nunney and his wife passed away yesterday afternoon around 1:30 PM. He and his family got into a single-car accident in North Carolina after dropping off their son Noah to college.'
'We have been informed that 2 of his children were with them - that they were rushed to IC but are stable and will be fine. Don had been a teacher at Gallagher since 1994, servicing generations and generations of families in the community for almost 30 years, and our heart goes out to his family; his wife was a teacher in the District as well at Wilbur Wright,' the statement continued.
'They both were well know in Cleveland, in their own community and moreover, well respected and will be missed...This tragedy has hit home at school but the impact on their family - on their children - that is life altering.'
'Maria and Donald were more than amazing and loving parents,' the GoFundMe, created by Georgina and Sandro Galindo, said.
The cause of the crash remains unclear and the investigation remains ongoing
'They were also a devoted son and daughter, siblings, caring teachers and friends. They gave so much of themselves to their students and their community.'
The fundraised money, which reached more than $130,500 as of Tuesday morning, is set to help the Nunney's four children and help lay the couple to rest.
'Maria and Donald leave behind a legacy of community, family, and love, all rooted in the devotion they had for their children and their family. That legacy will live on through Noah, Diego, Lucia, and Leo, who carry forward the very best parts of who their parents were,' the Galindo's wrote.
A friend wrote on Facebook that the pair 'blessed everyone they met.'
'The loss of these two is a loss to the world, but their kids are their greatest legacy,' they said.
Another close friend described them as 'the most caring, selfless, and kindhearted souls.'
'Their love for everyone, especially their children, is truly unmatched,' they added.

California man who admitted shipping weapons to North Korea is sentenced to 8 years in prison
A California man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after admitting to shipping weapons and ammunition to North Korea that he said were to be used for a surprise attack on South Korea, authorities said Tuesday. Shenghua Wen, 42, came to the U.S. from China on a student visa in 2012 and remained in the country illegally after it expired, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles. Wen pleaded guilty in June to one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government, the statement says. He was sentenced on Monday. Wen told investigators that before he entered the U.S., he met with North Korean officials at an embassy in China, where they instructed him to procure goods for the North Korean government. He also admitted that he tried to buy uniforms to disguise North Korean soldiers for the surprise attack, a federal complaint says. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has demonstrated an intent to deploy battlefield nuclear weapons along the North's border with South Korea, a U.S. ally, recently delivering nuclear-capable missile launchers to frontline military units. United Nations resolutions ban North Korea from importing or exporting weapons. In 2022, North Korean officials contacted him via an online messaging app and instructed him to buy firearms, prosecutors said. He shipped two containers of weapons and other items from Long Beach, California, to North Korea via Hong Kong in 2023. He told U.S. authorities that he was wired about $2 million to do so, according to the complaint. Authorities did not specify in the complaint the types of weapons that were exported. To carry out his operation, Wen purchased a business in 2023 called Super Armory, a federal firearms licensee, for $150,000, and registered it under his business partner's name in Texas. He had other people purchase the firearms and then drove them to California, misrepresenting the shipments as a refrigerator and camera parts. Investigators did not say whether Wen had organized any shipments during his first 10 years in the U.S. The FBI in September seized 50,000 rounds of ammunition from Wen's home in the LA suburb of Ontario that had been stored in a van parked in the driveway, the complaint says. They also seized a chemical threat identification device and a transmission detective device that Wen said he planned to send to the North Korean government for military use, the complaint says.

Bret Baier got swept up in DC police crackdown as he was pulled over for distracted driving
Fox News' Bret Baier got swept up in President Donald Trump's D.C. police crackdown as he was pulled over for distracted driving. Trump announced last week he had placed the Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control and deployed about 800 National Guard troops to D.C. to 'rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse,' despite violent crime declining in recent years. Now, 'no criminal is safe,' as MAGA influencer Gunther Eagleman put it, including a TV journalist from Trump's favorite channel. Baier, who hosts 'Special Report', and has interviewed Trump, was caught on video being pulled over in a white Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon by a D.C. cop. The video was captured by real estate firm The Mollaan Babbington Group and shared on Instagram Sunday. Eagleman posted the video to X on Monday and wrote, 'LOL! No criminal is safe in DC! Bret Baier just got popped.' Baier wrote on X Tuesday morning, 'I picked up my ringing phone as I drove past an officer while driving my wife's car in Georgetown. He pointed to have me pull over- I did. 'He was very professional. I had to dig for the registration card. Got a ticket and left. I didn't know there was paparazzi,' Baier said. On last night's 'Special Report', Baier planned to interview Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after he met with Trump and several other European leaders at the White House as the president pushes for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. But the White House visit ran late and Baier said Zelensky was unable to film the interview. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Tuesday there have been 465 arrests in D.C. since the start of the crackdown on August 7. Leavitt said there were 52 arrests made Monday night, including the arrest of an 'illegal alien MS-13 gang member with convictions for DWI and drug possession.' 'Thanks to President Trump's leadership and the outstanding work of both federal and local law enforcement, dangerous gang members like the one picked up last night will not be allowed on the streets of our nation's capital,' Leavitt said.
