New study suggests what actually happens when your mind goes blank
'My mind has gone blank' is a phrase you've probably heard of, and you might have even said a good few times yourself.
It's just something that happens to all of us at one time or another, and nobody knows why.
But it turns out the science behind it is surprising, as a new study has shed some light on what could be going on in the brain.
As it turns out, some of us experience this 'mind blank' phenomenon more than others and some experience it in a totally different way - which is crazy to only just find out.
The lead study author called Athena Demertzi revealed that the aim of the study was to 'better understand mind blanking'.
The team did this by 'parsing through 80 relevant research articles – including some of our own in which we recorded participants' brain activity when they were reporting that they were 'thinking of nothing'.'
Demertzi and colleagues in France, Australia, and Belgium wanted to find out the nature of what consciousness is, and this deep dive into it could hold the answers.
After analyzing the research articles, the researchers went on to find that on average, a person will 'blank' around five to 20 percent of the time and that people will experience this in a different way.
For example, they could go on to blank more often if they have a neuro-developmental disorder such as ADHD.
Or they could experience 'blanking' and their mind 'wandering', which have separate feelings.
You can blank when you are experiencing sustained focus, or when you are deprived of sleep or carrying out an intense workout.
Or, it could be down to neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as anxiety, Kleine-Levin syndrome, or a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Behavioral studies and research using brain imaging shows that when a person is blanking, the brain is far from being lazy as electroencephalography (EEG) found that the mind goes into a 'local sleep' state where sleep-like waves and reduced signal complexity, a slower heart rate and decreased pupil size occur.
All of these things typically indicate that sleep has begun.
Then, when looking into a 2019 study which was aided by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), it was found that several brain functions were switched off when people deliberately tried to turn their minds off.
This includes the inferior frontal gyrus, Broca's area, supplementary motor cortex, and the hippocampus.
But Demertzi and the researchers shared that because they chose to make their minds blank, the results could be different if it was to happen spontaneously.
'We realize that the investigation of [mind blanks] presents methodological and conceptual challenges,' the team noted.
On a whole they think it happens when the brain is in a high or low arousal state and are hoping the study will spark more conversations about the mind.

Australian GPs Gain Expanded Role in Treating ADHD
Australia is loosening regulations so that general practitioners (GPs) can meet the growing demand for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) care. But some specialists are advising caution. Earlier this year, the Western Australian government committed $1.3 million to training 65 GPs in ADHD management via a 13-hour online training module and a 6-month period of psychiatrist mentoring and peer learning. Sean Stevens, MD 'I'm seeing it every day in my practice, with patients struggling to get a timely diagnosis and treatment for ADHD,' Sean Stevens, MD, chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) ADHD Working Group in Western Australia, told Medscape Medical News . 'GPs are able to do this,' he said. 'It's a matter of ensuring that the training is appropriate, that GPs know where the thorny problems lie, where it's appropriate to refer [to a specialist].' New South Wales, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania are taking steps towards relaxing restrictions around ADHD management, while Queensland has permitted GPs to prescribe stimulants for children with ADHD since 2017. Victoria remains a holdout despite intensive lobbying from GPs, as does the Northern Territory. Tim Jones, MD 'We've seen commitment from all sides of politics down here in Tasmania to reform the ADHD space,' Tim Jones, MD, chair of the RACGP Child and Young Person's Health special interest group, told Medscape Medical News . 'The details are still thin,' he said. 'But we're certainly excited to see what this could mean for communities in need where access has become such a challenge.' Tasmania has no public services for adult patients with ADHD, and public pediatric services for children with ADHD have a 2-3 year wait time, said Jones. 'If you can think about that missed opportunity for early intervention to support children, that's pretty dire,' he said. Most Australian states do not allow ADHD to be diagnosed or treated in the public health system, meaning that families must pay to see private specialists, usually psychiatrists or pediatricians. In 2023, a Senate inquiry found that ADHD services were inaccessible because of lengthy wait times and high costs. New clinics opened to meet the demand, sometimes charging as much as $3000 for an ADHD diagnosis. Christopher Ouizeman 'Tens of thousands of people have called our help line, desperate for diagnosis and treatment options, and I know that most of the psychiatrists out there have got at least an 18-month waiting list,' Christopher Ouizeman, director of the ADHD Foundation, a not-for-profit patient advocacy group, told Medscape Medical News. ADHD treatment should be available within the public health system and within primary care, said Ouizeman. However, 'GPs can't provide patients with two hours' worth of care and only get paid for 15 minutes,' he said. 'That's just unfair and untenable.' Specialists Voice Concerns ADHD policy changes are underway in many states, but some specialists are nervous about the potential impacts and want greater involvement in the enactment of these changes. Roger Paterson, MD Some psychiatrists were concerned by the decision to expand the role of GPs in ADHD with what they considered insufficient consultation with specialists, Roger Paterson, MD, a psychiatrist based in Western Australia, a committee member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) ADHD Network, and a director of ADHD Western Australia, told Medscape Medical News . 'Psychiatrists should be central to the whole ADHD process,' he said. GPs have less experience in mental health than psychiatrists, who train for a minimum of 5 years, and allowing GPs to diagnose ADHD independently 'adds a degree of uncertainty to the whole process,' said Paterson. 'A select number of GPs with an interest in ADHD, and with adequate training through the RACGP, may well be helpful in areas of high unmet need,' he said. Some specialists are worried that ADHD stimulant prescribing regulations could become lax, such as the case with medicinal cannabis, where a small number of GPs are now being investigated for issuing more than 10,000 prescriptions, said Paterson. The reforms might not be necessary, some argue, since close to half of the psychiatrist workforce in Australia now has a special interest in ADHD. 'The RANZCP ADHD Network has over 2000 members,' said Paterson. Prescribing rates are also 'getting closer and closer' to the actual prevalence rates of ADHD, he added. An estimated 8.2% of children under age 12 years and 2.5% of adults have ADHD in Australia. Up to 7% of children and 2.3% of adults are now being prescribed an ADHD medication. Astha Tomar, MD 'We're all for innovations in this space, but you just want to be careful,' Astha Tomar, MD, president of RANZCP told Medscape Medical News . 'You would think for something so big … the government would bring the stakeholders together,' she said. 'It needs a whole-of-system approach, and not just a rule change here and there.' Psychiatrists usually spend around 45 minutes assessing whether symptoms are caused by ADHD or other conditions — such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, or a neurodevelopmental disorder — and up to 12 months adjusting treatments for each patient. 'ADHD assessment is not a 5-10-minute job,' said Tomar. Stimulants, which make up the majority of ADHD prescriptions, remain tightly controlled. Schedule 8 medicines misuse entails risks for psychosis, fatal overdose, and diversion. 'We have to make sure everybody stays safe,' said Tomar. Niroshini Kennedy, MD GPs can contribute meaningfully to care in ADHD, but 'changes to clinical pathways must be carefully designed in partnership with specialists,' Niroshini Kennedy, MD, the president of the pediatrics and child health division of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, told Medscape Medical News . 'Without important training, there are risks,' she said. 'Without a comprehensive and nuanced assessment, there is a risk of misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and harm to a child's development.' Queensland's Experience Some GPs in Queensland have started to set up clinics to manage children with ADHD, but they continue to 'talk things through' and get supervision from pediatricians, Tim Warnock, MD, a pediatrician in Cairns and past president of the Australian Paediatric Society, told Medscape Medical News . Tim Warnock, MD Warnock came out of retirement in 2023 because of workforce shortages. 'I couldn't transition dozens of patients to another pediatrician in Cairns,' because they were 'absolutely swamped,' he said. Given these bottlenecks, it's useful for GPs to 'try to get things done while they're waiting for a pediatric appointment' and then arrange for a review by a specialist at a later stage, said Warnock. 'GPs are aware of their own limitations,' he said. 'If GPs show the commitment and give the time to doing the assessments appropriately, they will probably run a good practice.' Stevens, Jones, Ouizeman, Paterson,Tomar, and Kennedyreported having no relevant financial relationships. 7 Sleep Behaviors That May Actually Be Sneaky Signs Of ADHD
Late-night scrolling, restless tossing and groggy mornings aren't always the result of too much caffeine or poor sleep hygiene, but could also be signs of something deeper. As ADHD diagnoses rise among adults, experts shed light on how the condition can impact sleep behaviors in ways that often go unrecognized. And if you're experiencing any of these challenges, here are expert-backed strategies to help improve your sleep. 1. Sleeping And Waking At Atypical Times Though often seen as simply being a night owl, there's actually a strong neurological overlap between ADHD and circadian rhythm disruptions like delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS). 'People with ADHD often experience a delayed release of melatonin, making it harder to feel sleepy at conventional times,' said Dr. Chelsea Sarai, clinical psychologist and founder of the Brentwood Therapy Collective. 'Combined with difficulty transitioning between tasks and regulating internal cues, their sleep-wake cycles naturally shift later and later, often without them realizing it.' The brain of someone with DSPS is wired to come alive at night, which makes it challenging to match typical daily routines. A way to gradually shift one's sleep schedule earlier is by getting exposure to natural light in the morning to help reset the body's internal clock. 'In the evening, reducing blue light exposure and maintaining a consistent wind-down routine can reinforce those shifts,' Sarai said. Related: 2. Difficulty 'Shutting Off' The Brain At Night Feeling physically tired but mentally alert can lead to long nights awake, and growing sleep debt. 'A hallmark of ADHD is difficulty regulating attention, not just focusing when needed, but also knowing how to mentally disengage,' Sarai said. 'At night, when external distractions fade, the brain suddenly has space to process everything that's been pushed aside during the day. This often leads to a surge of racing thoughts or mental 'noise' that makes it hard to wind down and fall asleep.' These thoughts can resemble anxiety, but Sarai notes they're not always anxious — they might be creative ideas or hyperfixations. Be realistic about how long it takes to fall asleep and create a wind-down routine to support it. 'It could look like writing down all the thoughts in one's head before bed as a way to honor those creative thoughts and trust that you will get back to them at a more appropriate time,' Sarai said. 3. Trouble Waking Up Despite Adequate Sleep Trouble waking up despite getting enough sleep is often brushed off as laziness, poor self-discipline or even a sign of depression. But in many cases, it can be attributed to having a delayed circadian rhythm and the ADHD brain struggling to shift from sleep to wakefulness, said Dr. Zishan Khan, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and regional medical director at Mindpath Health. 'Low dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the morning can also lead to grogginess, poor motivation and difficulty activating for the day,' he added. He suggests regulating the sleep-wake cycle by implementing consistent bedtimes and wake times, even on weekends, and using visual cues or alarms that gradually increase in volume or light. Related: 4. Using Screens To Fall Asleep Those with ADHD often turn to screens to calm a restless mind. 'The sensory stimulation — visual, auditory or narrative — can help distract from intrusive thoughts or anxiety, making it easier to drift off,' Khan said. For some, screens even mirror the level of internal alertness they're used to, which paradoxically helps them settle. But because screens suppress melatonin and delay sleep onset, even if someone falls asleep while using one, their sleep quality may still suffer from continued stimulation or disrupted sleep cycles. To support better sleep, try gradually replacing screen time with low-stimulation options like audiobooks, white noise or guided meditations. 'Establishing a 30- to 60-minute wind-down period before bed is crucial, ideally involving non-screen activities that still provide sensory regulation, such as dim lighting, gentle music or tactile tools like weighted blankets,' Khan said. 5. Bedtime Procrastination Delaying bedtime despite knowing it's time to sleep is often tied to poor time perception and difficulty shifting away from preferred activities. 'People with ADHD may hyperfocus on an enjoyable task late into the evening or delay sleep because it represents the end of their 'free time' after a demanding day,' Khan said. 'Visual timers, reminders and positive reinforcement can help signal the winding-down process,' Khan said. 'For those with ADHD, it's key to build in extra time for this process, as it often takes longer than expected to shift gears.' 6. Frequent Middle-Of-The-Night Wakeups People with ADHD often experience fragmented sleep due to arousal dysregulation and heightened sensitivity to environmental stimuli like noise or light. 'When they wake, which is normal even for good sleepers, they may struggle to fall back asleep due to intrusive thoughts or urges to engage in stimulating activities,' said Dr. Nicole Moshfegh, a licensed clinical psychologist and director of We Rise Psychology, Inc. These disruptions can prevent the brain from cycling through all the important stages of sleep, especially deep and REM sleep, leading to grogginess, reduced focus and memory, and less impulse control the next day. If you wake up at night, avoid checking the clock or using screens, which can increase alertness. Instead, Moshfegh suggests practicing stimulus control: if you're awake for 15 to 20 minutes, get out of bed and do a quiet, dim-light activity like reading or stretching until you feel sleepy. To keep your sleep on track, stick to consistent wake-up times and get morning light, either by going outside or using a light therapy box, within 30 to 60 minutes of waking. 'This light acts as a strong cue to anchor your internal clock and reduce daytime sleepiness,' Moshfegh said. Here's When To Consider An ADHD Assessment If you consistently struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep or wake up feeling unrefreshed despite practicing good sleep hygiene, and these issues coexist with difficulties in focus, organization, time management or emotional regulation, it may be worth seeking an evaluation for ADHD. 'This is especially true if sleep difficulties have been lifelong or began in childhood, and if they interfere with daytime functioning at school, work or in relationships,' Khan said. 'It's important to view sleep problems not in isolation, but in the context of other symptoms that may point toward a broader neurodevelopmental condition.' Related... ADHD medication reduces risk of suicide and criminal behaviour, study finds
Medication prescribed to people with ADHD not only helps them focus but it also reduces the risk of suicidal behaviours, substance misuse, transport accidents and criminality, a study has found. It's estimated 2.6 million people in the UK live with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects around 5 per cent of children and 2.5 per cent of adults worldwide. But in the UK, just over half are prescribed medication for it. Researchers compared the impacts of medicating ADHD on those who have been recently diagnosed. Using data from Swedish national registers between 2007 and 2020 researchers at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, were able to examine the effects of ADHD drug treatment in 148,581 individuals aged between six and 64-years-old over two years. Just over half (57 per cent) of participants had started drug treatment for ADHD, with methylphenidate – a type of stimulant – being the most commonly prescribed (88.4 per cent). However, the other people who were also newly diagnosed did not receive medication. The study, published by the BMJ, assessed how often those with ADHD had suicidal behaviours, substance misuse, accidental injuries, transport accidents, and criminality, over two years after their diagnosis. After accounting for factors including age, sex, education level, psychiatric diagnoses and medical history, ADHD medication was associated with a 17 per cent reduction for suicidal behaviour, 15 per cent for substance misuse, 12 per cent for transport accidents, and 13 per cent for criminality. However, the reduction was not statistically significant for a first-time accidental injury. But amongst people with recurrent events, the rate reductions associated with ADHD medication were seen for all five outcomes: a 15 per cent reduction for suicidal attempts, 25 per cent for substance misuse, 4 per cent for accidental injuries, 16 per cent for transport accidents, and 25 per cent for criminality. Samuele Cortese Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Southampton and study author, highlighted that people need to be educated on the long-term risks of ADHD. 'Commonly people think ADHD is over diagnosed but there are still many people who have ADHD that are not diagnosed, and many are exposed to these risks,' he said. 'Side effects of medication can include reduced appetite and difficulty falling asleep, but they usually get better over time or they can be managed.' Struggling to pay attention, having high energy levels and being impulsive are common symptoms of ADHD. Stimulants can work by increasing activity in the brain, particularly in areas that help control attention and behaviour, according to the NHS. Study authors say that by reducing impulsivity, it may also lower criminality by curbing aggressive behaviour, and enhance attention, which might decrease the risk of transport accidents by minimising distractions. 'These results provide evidence on the effects of ADHD drug treatment on important health related and social outcomes that should inform clinical practice and the debate on the drug treatment of ADHD,' study authors conclude.
