Fire at Russian industrial plant kills 11 people and leaves 130 injured
The blaze broke out at the Elastik plant in the Shilovsky District, around 250 kilometres southeast of Moscow. Emergency crews continued to search through debris into the weekend, and two additional bodies were recovered overnight, the Russian Emergencies Ministry said.
According to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, a gunpowder workshop at the facility caught fire and triggered the blast.
Of the injured, 29 remained hospitalised on Saturday — 13 in Ryazan and 16 transported to medical centres in Moscow, officials said.
Regional authorities said three people were rescued from under the rubble overnight as investigators launched a preliminary probe into the cause of the fire.
Local authorities declared a day of mourning in the Ryazan region on Monday.
'Flags will be lowered across the region. Cultural institutions, television and radio companies and organizations have been asked to cancel entertainment events,' Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said in a statement on Telegram.
It was the second deadly explosion at the Elastik plant in less than four years. In October 2021, according to the Russian state news agency Interfax, 17 people were killed in a blast at a workshop operated by explosives manufacturer Razryad.

The deadly U.S. Steel plant explosion that killed two people and hospitalized nearly a dozen others near Pittsburgh happened ahead of planned maintenance, the company said. In preliminary findings, U.S. Steel said the Aug. 11 Clairton Coke Works Plant blast occurred when personnel were flushing a gas valve while preparing for maintenance at the Pennsylvania facility that processes raw coal into coke, which is used to make steel. Pressure built inside the valve, which led to valve failure, the company said in an Aug. 15 news release. Coke oven gas then filled the area and ultimately exploded with an ignition source. The company didn't specify the ignition source, saying that the investigation was in its early stages. The blast triggered subsequent explosions at the plant, which is located about 15 miles outside Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. The federal Chemical Safety Board, which has opened an investigation into the explosion, didn't immediately responded to a request for comment on Aug. 16. Bernie Hall, District 10 director of the United Steelworkers union, said in a statement that it was early in the investigation, "so we need to learn more before speculating further." The blast killed Timothy Quinn, 39, and Steven Menefee, 52, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. Ten people were hospitalized, while other workers onsite had minor injuries. The 392-acre Clairton plant is considered the largest coking facility in North America, the Chemical Safety Board has said. It employs nearly 1,300 people. Former Russian Miss Universe contestant, 30, dies after elk smashes through windshield
A model and former Miss Universe contestant from Russia died last week from injuries she suffered after an elk crashed through the windshield of her Porsche, according to a report. Kseniya Alexandrova, 30, died from severe brain injuries from the accident that occurred while she was driving with her husband in Tver Oblast, Russia, on July 5, Russian news outlet RIA reported. She remained hospitalized in a coma until her death on Aug. 12. Alexandrova and her husband were returning home from Rzhev when the collision with the elk happened on the M‑9 highway, the outlet reported. The husband, who was not named in the report, said there was no time to react to the animal jumping in front of the couple's Porsche Panamera, adding that he and Alexandrova were both wearing seatbelts, and were driving at a low speed during the collision. "From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn't have time to do anything," he told the outlet in a statement translated from Russian. Alexandrova, who was in the passenger seat, suffered a head injury when the animal hurtled through the windshield and into the cabin of the car, her husband told the outlet. "She was unconscious, her head was fractured, everything was covered in blood. The frontal bones of the skull were broken – it was an open cranial-brain injury," he said. The couple had been married just four months before the freak accident, according to her Instagram. She was also a psychologist who earned her degree from Moscow Pedagogical State University, according to a November 2022 post on her social media. Alexandrova represented Russia in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant and placed second in the Miss Russia competition earlier that year. Alexandrova's modeling agency, Modus Vivendis, confirmed her death in a statement that was written in Russian and posted on the agency's Instagram on Aug. 13. "It is with great sadness that we inform you that our colleague and friend, model Kseniya Alexandrova, passed away yesterday evening," the translated statement said. "Kseniya was bright [and] talented. She knew how to inspire, support and give warmth to everyone who was around," the agency continued. "For us, she will forever remain a symbol of beauty, kindness and inner strength."
