Charles Leclerc crashes out of Canada first practice as Max Verstappen sets pace
Verstappen, who is a point away from a one-race ban following his collision with Mercedes' George Russell at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, ended the session just 0.039 seconds clear of Williams driver Alex Albon.
Carlos Sainz finished third in the other Williams with Russell fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth. Lando Norris was only seventh while his McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri finished down the order in 14th.
Verstappen, who heads into this weekend's race 49 points behind Piastri in the standings, produced the quickest time in the opening action of the weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to lay down an early marker.
But Leclerc's preparations for the 10th round of the campaign were dealt a blow when he suffered a heavy accident with just nine laps on the board.
The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane.
'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.'
Leclerc's Ferrari mechanics will now face a race against time to ensure his car is ready for the concluding practice session of the day which begins at 17:00 local time (22:00 BST).

The session was red-flagged for eight minutes as Leclerc's stricken Ferrari was retrieved and repairs to the barriers were completed.
As Verstappen launched his Red Bull to the top of the order, Norris appeared to be struggling with the handling of his McLaren and finished 0.458 seconds behind the Dutchman.
Piastri, who has won five of the nine rounds so far and leads Norris by 10 points, was even further back, one second off Verstappen's pace.
The British team were experimenting with a new front wing and will be expected to improve in the day's second session.

Arsenal put on red alert as Bayern Munich threaten to derail another transfer
Arsenal are yet to make any new signings so far this summer and two of manager Mikel Arteta's top targets are also of interest to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a move for Arsenal target Benjamin Sesko, with the striker viewed as a potential successor to Harry Kane. Sesko has starred for RB Leipzig since joining the club from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, netting 39 goals in 87 games across all competitions. Arsenal have a longstanding interest in the 22-year-old, having attempted to sign him last summer before he agreed a new deal with Leipzig, and the Gunners have held initial talks over a move this summer. However, Bayern could hijack the deal after Bild reported that the Bundesliga champions are also interested in Sesko. The report states that Bayern also tried sign Sesko last summer and a move is 'not completely off the table' this summer. It is claimed that Bayern are huge fans of the striker and would play him up front ahead of Kane, who would drop back into the No.10 role. The report adds that Leipzig want more than €100million (£85m) for Sesko, but are 'willing to talk' for a figure of around €70m (£60m). The news comes after it emerged that Bayern are also interested in another Arsenal target. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, but Sky Germany are reporting that the winger is open to joining Bayern. Leroy Sane recently joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, with his Bayern contract expiring at the end of the summer, and it is claimed that Williams could replace him at the Allianz Arena. The report adds that the deal is 'still at an early stage', with Williams having a release clause in his contract of around €60m (£51m). Bilbao president Jon Uriarte recently spoke out about the forward's future and suggested he could remain at the club. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Williams, meanwhile, said last summer: "Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white. "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year." Barcelona, though, are also interested in Williams and reports from Spain claim that they have opened talks with the player's agent.

US Open third round: Scores and latest leaderboard from Oakmont
2:25PM Tee times amended I was duped by misreading the world clock. They are in fact half an hour later BST. Apologies. First out is Philip Barbaree on seven-over – he made the cut this morning with a birdie on the last: Philip Barbaree Jr. had to make this 5-footer Saturday morning to play the weekend at Oakmont. Look at what it means 🥹 (🎥: @RoyLangIII) — U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 14, 2025 Sky's coverage in the UK starts at 3pm. 2:10PM Enjoying the tempest As Oakmont gets absolutely soaked with rain right now, this Ben Griffin quote is giving me life. "I'm down for whatever." — Paolo Uggetti (@PaoloUggetti) June 14, 2025 1:55PM Third-round pin positions Let's do this…. — Adam Schupak (@AdamSchupak) June 14, 2025 1:44PM Created by sadists, welcome to this year's US Open golf course It had not happened to Paul Casey before and has not happened to anyone since. When the Englishman walked towards the recorder's hut in the 2007 US Open, his fellow pros on the practice green put down their putters and delivered a collective round of applause. Casey had not won – it was only the Friday – but with a 66 he had, for one day only, conquered Oakmont. 'That was a one-off, not just my score, but the reaction from the guys,' Casey told Telegraph Sport. 'Anywhere else and you shoot a good score and all you get from them is a grunt of 'Well done'. It just shows the difficulty of Oakmont. It bites and it bites hard.' Indeed, the joke in the clubhouse is that the 18 holes would be more appropriately placed in Transylvania than Pennsylvania. The members cherish its reputation as the hardest course on the major rotas – maybe too much – and love to repeat the statement of the founder's son, WC Fownes: 'Let the clumsy, the spineless and the alibi makers stand aside.' 1:30PM Oakmont's a brute but where does it stand with its savage counterparts? 1:23PM Don't come if you don't want to get wet Because more rain is expected and Oakmont promises to be quite sloppy in various spectator locations, the USGA is telling ticket holders they can get a full refund for Saturday if they elect not to come to the tournament foe the third round — Bob Harig (@BobHarig) June 14, 2025 1:19PM Tee times just announced Selected: 15.34 Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele 17.18 Ryan Fox and Bob MacIntyre 17.40 Rasmus Hojgaard and Aaron Rai 18.02 Cameron Young and Scottie Scheffler 19.13 Tyrrell Hatton and Christiaan Bezuidenhout 19.51 Kim Si-woo and Brooks Koepka 20.02 Russell Henley and Thriston Lawrence 20.13 Victor Perez and Ben Griffin 20.24 Adam Scott and Viktor Hovland 20.35 JJ Spaun and Sam Burns 12:30PM Tee times TBC At the end of the second round which will resume for the 13 golfers who were unfinished when lightning struck and the hooter sounded late last night. The third round will begin at around 3pm BST, 10amEDT. 12:24PM Weather forecast for Plum, Pennsylvania According to the Weather Channel, there will be fairly persistent rain this morning, max temperature of 23C/74F and the rain lightens around noon followed by intermittent showers all afternoon which will be a godsend to the players on those previously brilliantined greens. 12:18PM Preview: Moving day Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of round three, moving day, of the 2025 US Open from the infernal Oakmont. After the 13 stragglers who were left stranded on the final holes of their second rounds complete them this morning, proceedings will begin with Sam Burns in the halfway lead at three-under with Rory McIlroy starting early, once the tee time shave been confirmed, nine strokes behind after making the cut by one shot with Friday's birdie at the 18th. Better to start early than not at all, which is the fate of defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who is heading home to Grapevine (I bet you're wondering how I knew) after his R2 seven-over left him marooned at 10-over for the tournament. Burns' five-under-par 65 put him one shot clear of Thursday's overnight leader JJ Spaun while the only other player under par is Viktor Hovland, alone in third place and two shots behind Burns after a two-under 68 that included a chip-in for an eagle from behind the green at his eighth hole, the par-four 17th. Adam Scott, playing in his 96th consecutive major, recorded a second successive even-par 70 and was three shots off the pace and in a two-way share of fourth place with Ben Griffin. Play was suspended due to lightning with 13 golfers still on the course in a driving rain, including South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, who was looking at a three-foot par putt on his final hole to stay at one over on the week when the horn sounded. 'Just about when I was going to take my putt, the siren sounded,' said Lawrence. 'A bit frustrating in that sense, but those are the rules.' McIlroy was in a battle with his driver and irons to make the cut after two early double-bogeys and hoyed one of them in exasperation at the 12th after botching his approach before destroying the tee box at 17 with a violent swing of his club. Yet he managed to make par at the penultimate hole and closed with a birdie to make the cut with a shot to spare. Pre-tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler endured a switchback ride of four birdies and five bogeys for a one-over 71 that left him at four-over. 'Today was, I think with the way I was hitting it, was easily a day I could have been going home and battled pretty hard to stay in there,' said Scheffler. 'I'm four-over. We'll see what the lead is after today, but around this golf course I don't think by any means I'm out of the tournament.'

Live Le Mans 2025: Latest updates from 24 hour race
14 June 2025 1:35pm 1:35PM In the hands of the gods… The weather has decided too many previous Le Mans' to remember, with the threat and risk of rain never far away. Given the track is an enormous 13.6km long, sections of the track can be drenched while the rest of it remains dry, such is the uncertainty over when and where storms could hit. Catch the rain at the wrong time and it can wreck an entire race, but catch it at the right times and teams can gain significant ground if the gods play into their favour. So how is the forecast looking for the next 24 hours? There is a fair deal of cloud around as we head towards the start, but there hasn't been any showers so far today and the forecast suggests we should be in store for a completely dry race, with Sunday looking to be a lovely blend of sunshine and clearer skies. However, the French Meteo Office issued a severe weather warning alert this morning that there remains the risk of severe thunderstorms, and given we've had a major downpour every day this week without fail, I'll believe a fully dry race when I see it. 1:23PM Welcome to Le Mans! The 93rd edition of Le Mans 24 Hours promises to be one of the most competitive events in the race's 102-year history as Cadillac, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Toyota, Alpine, Aston Martin and Peugeot battle it out for victory. The gruelling endurance race is made up of three categories, with the top-class Hypercars made of the world's leading supercar manufacturers. With three drivers for each car, teams must mix speed, strategy and precision to stay the course of the 24 hours' racing and reach the finish line in one piece. Behind the Hypercars comes the LMP2 category - Le Mans Prototype 2 to give it its full name - which consists of privateer teams who run similar-looking cars to the Hypercar category, albeit within the hybrid energy system that makes the top class that little bit faster. Finally, the LMGT3 class is filled with GT cars, racing versions of the supercars you'll see on the road with a mix of Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins, McLarens, Corvettes, BMWs, Ford's, Mercedes' and even a pair of Lexus'. The race gets under way from 3pm on Saturday - 4pm local time here in Le Mans - and concludes at the same time on Sunday with drivers running through the night in their bid to be the first to the finish line. Telegraph Sport will be with you for the entire duration, bringing you all the latest updates from the paddock as we follow the biggest challenge in motorsport.
